Match breakdown: Paarl Gim 37 Outeniqua 25

28 April, 2013 beet 28

Paarl Gymnasium defeated Outeniqua 37-25 in an away game the many got to enjoy as a result of the Premier Interschools live T.V. coverage. By winning the game Gimmies effectively put a target on their backs as the new team to beat in SA schoolboy rugby.

The game was little like a “Rock, Paper, Scissors!” contest with the Kwaggas constantly opting for individual brilliance (scissors) and almost always being trumped by Gim’s teamwork approach (rock).

The rankings confirm that the organisers of Wildeklawer are pretty much on the ball when it comes to inviting the cream of the crop to attend the annual showpiece which will be held from 02 – 04 May at Maritzburg College in Pietermaritzburg this year.…

The Los Pumitas have beaten the Baby Boks 2-1 in a series in Argentina. After winning the opening match 26-3, the SA under-20 team lost the next two games 27-42 and 22-27.

On the one hand it’s pleasing to see the juniors getting valuable game time as a unit ahead of the Junior World Championships in France in June. However one just has to ask the question again: do we have our best players on board? …

Grey High benefits from understanding SARU age-banding rules

22 April, 2013 beet 23

On Saturday Grey High held on to recorded a 23-18 win against visitors Paul Roos. This was their second win in two seasons against Paul Roos.

A feature of the game was the outstanding form of under-16 flyhalf Curwin Bosch who turned out for the home side’s 1st XV.  Many locals in attendance feel that the youngster’s play was the difference between the two teams on the day.

WP Schools name 4 trial teams for 24 April 2013

Article from www.stoopstats.co.zastoopstatslogo

The selectors have named four teams plus reserves for what should be the penultimate round of trials, to be held at Bellville High School on Wednesday 24 April 2013.

While one would normally assume that the Stoffberg and Links teams, who meet at 16:15 are more highly regarded than the Jasper and van Rensburg selections, who play each other at 15:15, there is always room for surprises in the final selections.…

SA Rankings for 13 April 2013

16 April, 2013 beet 221

Not too much happened this week to affect the top of the table rankings IMHO. There was one huge game at Brug Street in Paarl. The Kwaggas who were already my No.1 team won it but Boishaai did not disgrace themselves and in my books they are still pretty much a Top 10 team, a view that Rugby15.co.za and SASchoolSports.co.za do not seem to share. At least SASchoolsports was able to promote the Kwaggas to No.1 on their list.…

WP “Premier League” about to kick off

The only thing official about the WP Premier League is that it is officially tough. The competition is hot down south. Quality players make for quality teams. As a result, well the analysis of the Super Rugby players’ schools attended  says it all, the region produces more professional rugby players than any other in South Africa. It’s an annual norm but worth mentioning once more that several WP schools will hold down national Top 20 places come the end of the season. …
