At long last Outeniqua for the masses!

How good is Outeniqua? Well this Saturday you don’t have to rely on a written report or word of mouth. You will be able to judge for yourself. The Outeniqua versus Paarl Gim game will be televised live on SuperSport 1 as a result of the Premier Interschools initiative to provide coverage of the very best of South African schoolboy rugby. BTW Gimmies are no slouches either. Prepare to be thrilled.

Premier Interschools – Clash of the Titans!…It is not a remake of classical Greek mythology but come Saturday the 27th the current two top schoolboy teams in SA will clash in George in what can only be described as a titanic battle! Both teams are unbeaten thus far with Outeniqua having two big scalps in Grey College Bloem and Paarl Boys High already in the bag. Paarl Gim demolished the pride of KZN schools rather easily during the Easter Festivals and looks like a team who is running on all cylinders.

If history is any guideline, Saturday’s match is slightly in favour of the Kwaggas. In analysing the last 5 matches played, Outeniqua won 18-15 in 2009. In 2010 Paarl Gim wins 38-20. In 2011 Outeniqua returns the favour and wins 16-11. They played twice in 2012 with one draw in the league match and the other match was the final of Die Burger competition where Outeniqua once again surprized Gim in beating them 30-22. Those two matches against Outeniqua cost Paarl Gim their No 1 spot last year and they would love to set the record straight as the Kwaggas are currently ranked No 1 in the country. Paarl Gim would only see it as justice if they can knock Outeniqua off the No 1 spot on Saturday.

The two teams are evenly matched in that Gim most probably have the better pack of forwards and Kwaggas the better backs. The Outeniqua backs demonstrated only last week against Paarl Boys that with half decent ball they can be devastating. Their key players being No 9 Remu Malan, No 10 Dewald Human, No 13 Warrick Gelant (SA Schools 2012) and No 11 Duhan vd Merwe (SA Schools 2012). They all have speed, agility and very good vision.

Paarl Gim boast with two of the very best loose forwards in the country in Jacques Vermeulen and Rikus Bothma. Top that off with 2012 SA Schools lock JD Schickerling and you can be certain that Gim will fancy their chances up front.

A draw looks like a mighty good call if you are a betting man!

@BOG: We will see how good the Selborne team is this Saterday when they play Queens who have a usefull team although Queens have 3 stars missing through injury so could be a hard day at the office for them.

Was not at the game on Saterday so not sure if the No7 did well i do know that Maruis Louw did not play he was injured. I think the Cherries team is full of boys who would play first team at just about any other school so most schools 2nd teams will battle to come close to them.

@Queenian: Yes, maybe they thought that the buildings on the left, coming into QT from the North, was a farm stall. I believe that the Cherries have a good side. In fact, even here, I heard noises, suggesting that there are players in that team who deserve to be in the 1sts. Did you see the match? Any standout players who caught your eye? How did the no 7, Queens contribution, play? As I mentioned to Ludz, the loss of the U15s, came as a surprise(and shock) They have played very good sides at tournaments this year and were until Saturday, unbeaten.

@Tandem thank you for your kind praise, I still expect inter schools to be evenly matched and very tough. You will remember that Boishaai comfortably beat Gym at u16 level 2 years ago. I must say I am surprised by your team’s subdued start to the season as you have a very talented group of players, with a lot of depth. Although Dewald Naude will make a huge difference at 13 now that he has recovered from concussion. Your back line has plenty of pace with Dante Vd Merwe certainly one of the most exciting fullbacks in SA. I am looking forward to your game against Grey College next month and I will, as always, support Boishaai when they do not play us. Good luck for Wildeklawer.

@gimmie: I totally agree, Kwaggas was never in the game. They put to little phases together and the rely only on few players. Gim was excellent and they kept their structure throughout the game. As normal Jacques played a brilliant game but all the forwards made this win look easy, as it was. Kwaggas never in the game and they need to look at second line of defense if they want to win against the good teams. Their is still time for them to correct this but hen the coaches need to start coaching and not just rely on heir game breakers.

@gimmie: Must agree with you about Affies, but I do think it will be a close game since Affies also play without any structure. But they score every time they break the line. With the best fullback in schoolboy rugby Keyter, Scmullian, Linde, little Dawie the #12, RG, WP and the hooker. You can be sure Kwaggas will have to know their defensive patterns. Otherwise big trouble.

He outplayed Gelant in my opinion. He was awesome against Glenwood too. Gim have an awesome ‘spine’ of players 5, 8, 9,12 and 15. No 5,7,8,9 and 12 should make WP Schools and SA Schools…

Well @umtata that is another story..WP Craven Week selection is dominated by Boishaai and Paul Roos. Interestingly, Gym had 5 players in A team at final trial and Boishaai 7. Even more perplexing is that Boishaai narrowly beat Bishops 22-18 and Bishops has nobody in the A team. The reality is that the importance of Craven Week has been diluted with the better schools playing each other at the various festivals. Teams like SWD and Free State have a massive advantage in that they are quasi Grey and Kwaggas teams. WP should really professionalise their set-up. Last year the Boishaai under 16 coach coached the craven week side! Why not get one of the WP professional coaches to coach them under the super vision of John Dobson? WP have the best school boy competition in SA with Gym, Boishaai and Paul Roos consistently in the top 10 rankings. They should do much better…

@ploegskaar, please remember we played the first game last year against Kwaggas without Pollard and the second without 5 of our star players including Pollard and Bothma. With respect to the mighty Kwaggas, Handre would have dominated Human and the results would have been different. Be that as it may, injuries are part of our great game and we took it on the chin and it cost us the nr 1 ranking with our much respected enemy, Boishaai claiming the nr 1 spot…Kwaggas are a brilliant team with unbelievable talent… They will however need to evolve as a team and implement better structures and defensive patterns otherwise the brutal Affies will hurt them. Personally I cannot wait to see Gellant against Jurie Linde of Affies, he also has pace and power, how blessed are we in this country! @greenblooded, how do you think the Gym 12 (Oosthuizen), compares with Gellant?

Excellent win for Gym, though not unexpected. I watched the Kwaggas against Boishaai 2 weeks ago and was disappointed with their lack of structure and brittle defence. Their 2 props can’t play the modern game and leaves them with only 13 defenders. They also play far too deep and behind the gain line. Having said that nrs 10, 11, 12 and 14 are unbelievable. Human should specialise in 7s, he will win us gold medals at the Olympics and Gellant is one of the best school centres I have ever seen. WP should buy him immediately to replace Jean when he retires in a year or 2. I thought the score line flattered Outeniqua as there was a clear knock-on by Gellant in the first try and their surely was massive obstruction by the forwards when Eksteen scored. Not that I am complaining about Jaftha, he is a good ref. As for Gym, the pack was very good, with Vermeulen, Schickering, Cilliers (an unsung hero) and Bothma monstrous. Nel at 9 is very underrated and unbelievably did not make the final 4 WP trial teams. Oosthuizen at 12 is our kingpin and has great vision. The first try of Gym was a great team effort with the ball going through nearly 10 phases. This is a very special team…

Maybe this result is a fair reflection of how good Gym is and puts the strength of the “Big Boys” that the Kwaggas beat thus far, into perspective. So Gym take it by 12, I was 2 points out. Gym forwards and especially loose forwards dominated. Kwaggas backs showing class on the scraps of possession they had. Gym loose forwards are just too big, too fast and too skillful. Well done Gym, makes Glenwood’s 40-12 loss a little easier to take…

@Ploegskaar: Watched the preview of game and is it not strange that the captian when asked about their season so far said they won against Boland Landbou. It shows the respect they have for Landbou. According to me no 7 of Paarl Gym man of the match. Excellent.
But must also say I think Affies with its broken game plan will run Kwaggas to pieces. Sorry Boys it is a pity 1 & 2 will not play each other this year.

I’ll have to find out a TV on the Selborne campus, just so I can catch a bit of the Gimmies-Kwaggas game, Selborne parents, QC86 and GCollege86? Any place where we can find a TV on campus to watch a bit of the game?

@Tjoppa: I cannot see that Kwaggas will make it slow, their strength is a fast running game and waiting for mistakes from Gim to attack. Their counter attacking play is brilliant so the faster the better for them. Pressure is a funny thing so lets see if they keep on playing this way.

@Gungets Tuft: Not sure what the story is, but I hear DHS are doing some proper recruitment down in the EC. Their acquisition of Dru Nass’s services will also do them well in that regard. So far, they have bagged 2 from Dale and a couple more from elsewhere.I guess a school has to do what it has to do to get their rugby right.

@rugbyfan: I’ll look into that. That really does not leave a good image at all. In the last reunion that I attended in 2011, the beer tent and MASC only opened after the 1st XV game.I dont know why that would have changed last year.Of course, this did not mean that there weren’t okes who had been intoxicated from elsewhere on the fields.

Having ‘played’ both these 2 sides and losing by some margin..I have to back the ‘Kwaggas’ against Paarl Gim. by atleast 10 to 15. . IMHO ! Should be a Great game though! Good Luck to both teams.

@Playa: I was at that match last year and Queenian is right the crowd was on and off the field the whole time and yes a few minutes from the end people just moved onto the field and start lifting the Dale boys and the Ref had not even blown his final wistle yet and to make it worse Queens had a 5 meter scrum in front of the Dale posts.

Not good for the image of the school and it all boiled down to alcohol not a good idea opening a beer tent at 9 in the morning 20 meter from the main field.

@bhkgpa: I’m really looking forward to the battle between Gim’s defence and the Kwaggas attack. Gim were systematic and strong up front but they really decimated our 3 KZN schools backlines whenever we tried to move the ball wide. They seem to know how and when to apply the pressure to force errors and disorganise attacks. That said the Outeniqua backline is a totally different prospect to anything we have in KZN. What Gim and in particular the centre partnership of Wayno Visagie and Ryan Oosthuizen do to close down all those 4 factor backs (Gelant, Human, Eksteen and vd Merwe) is perhaps where this game will be won and lost.

Gim can certainly make life easier for themselves by doing the hard work up front but even here to presume they will dominate is not a given. The battle in the lineout, the scrums and especially the tight loose is going to be a pleasure to watch. Some big boys in both packs but I’m keeping an eye on the smallest one – Geor Malan. At KERF he was often the most effective Outeniqua forward.

@Tandem: Kwaggas forwards will be up for the task. Their loosies just as good as Paarl Gim. I think they are much quicker to the breakdown than Gim. Concerns for Kwaggas will the the tackle situation where Boishaai murdered them. I think this is where Gim will be the stronger team. Back line Gim won’t be able to match Kwaggas. Kwaggas by 10 plus.

@Queenian: Interesting that you mention DHS. I am told the regular Primary school rugby watchers don’t recognise many of the DHS U14A players. There was a lot of chat here earlier this year about which Durban primary school kids were going where, perhaps a load of the new DHS kids have been recruited down south. Perhaps Horse 1 can help out with the origins of their new players?

Paarl Gym to win by 10 plus . Gym forwards to destroy Kwaggas . Gym loosies to run the game . Bothma future Springbok with 6 and 7 also very good . Gym backs better than people think .

@Queenian: Bot surprised. It seems to be the norm now that Dale has become a feeder school.

As for the crowd… …I wasnt there last year.It would be disappointing if what you’re saying is true.I hope they’d be better crowd control in that case.

@Playa: Are they going to control the crowd better at this years Dale reunion last year things got a bit out of control a lot of people were drunk by 10 in the morning and the way they just moved onto to field 3 minutes before the end of the 1st game was not good.

Does not do school any good

@Playa: The other shocking thing i heard on saterday watching the Juinors one of the Dale parents told me that 3 of there under 13A team are leaving at the end of the year 1 to St Andrews 1 to Selborne and 1 to DHS.

Not sure how true that is.

I see Queens also have a bye this week before Selborne with all the injuries they picked up they need it to star players of the Under15A out for the whole term and the Under center Smith also got hurt so things look a bit bleak.

@rugbyfan: It’s a cyclical rebuilding phase. It may take a while, considering they’ve lost such a lot of players in the younger teams.Recently lost 8 under 15 players.I’d say things will look bad for the next 3 years…but who knows. One thing’s for sure, this slump is not permanent.

Yeah, I hear they stood their ground on defence last weekend.Probably helped a lot by Queens’ handling errors. It’s a young team, they’ll be better next year. There’s a decent bunch of under 16s coming up as well…if we can keep them.

It would be great for SA Schoolboy rugby if the Kwaggas take this one.

    But I predict a high scoring draw…32-32.
