Mutual & Federal – Premier Interschool’s new title sponsor

JOHANNESBURG, 10 April 2013: South Africa’s popular Premier Interschools rugby series on Wednesday received a massive boost with the announcement that leading short term insurer Mutual & Federal had signed a three-year contract as the title sponsor, with Cell C and G4S as associate sponsors. Premier Interschools is a series of 12 matches, which will feature the highest profile and most traditional interschool rugby rivalries, from South Africa’s top rugby schools, broadcast live on SuperSport from April to August.

Schoolboy rugby has served as one of the cornerstones of domestic rugby dating back more than a century, and true to its slogan “Honouring Heritage. Playing for the Future”, Premier Interschools is about History, Heritage and Tradition. The series, now in its second year, is expected to grow even stronger.

The Premier Interschools stories will further be captured in 12 magazine shows which will preview all the games and provide historical overviews of these traditional schools and highlight other academic, cultural and sporting achievements.

Commenting on Mutual & Federal signing up as the title sponsor, former Springbok Captain and Premier Interschools Director, Tiaan Strauss said: “It is a privilege for Premier Interschools that Mutual & Federal, as one of the oldest companies in South Africa, has joined as a sponsor. Premier Interschools is all about the traditions and heritage of the participating schools and that goes hand in hand with a brand like Mutual & Federal.

“I would further like to thank Cell C and G4S for coming on board as associate sponsors to make Premier Interschools a great success.

“I am very proud to be involved with Premier Interschools as I experienced some of my most memorable and passionate moments during my school rugby career, and Premier Interschools would like to bring such special moments to the public by broadcasting these games.”

Mutual & Federal Executive: Brand, Customer and Transformation, Vuyo Lee, was equally delighted with the deal and said it was an easy decision to sponsor the series as schoolboy rugby formed a vital cog in the development of future Springbok heroes. Lee said: “The Premier Interschools series embodies the proud heritage of rugby in South Africa while also providing a platform to nurture future rugby heroes. These principles resonate with the Mutual & Federal brand and our proud heritage which dates back over 180 years.”

Cell C Chief Commercial Officer Jose Dos Santos echoed the sentiment that the series could have a big influence in paving the way for some players to achieve their dreams of becoming Springboks in future, and said this inspired them to support the series as associate sponsors.

“We are proud to be associated with Premier Interschools Rugby,” said Dos Santos. “This event will ultimately change the lives of many of these young, aspiring sports stars and Cell C will be a part of that magic, this is why we do what we do, to change lives.”

Albert Erasmus, Managing Director, G4S Cash Solutions added: “Globally, G4S has invested in the development of youth through the sponsorship of sport.  G4S is particularly proud to be associated with sport in South Africa, and the Premier Interschools series is yet another example of G4S’s commitment to the communities in which we operate.  We are grateful for this opportunity and would like to thank all those involved in arranging this event.  Good luck to all the schools.”

I know his knowledge of netbal is also superior. A man of a lot of talents. You are questioning WC blue blood. Bend the knee Playfair.

@star: ok sorry your dream team is the 2014 side, we will give it to Kearsney this year. From my memory in the 90’s Westville found Pinetown a handful as did Glenwood but that was our worst decade in our history. I happened to play in the worst year too….we lost to Westville by a point due to a dodgy last minute penalty for ‘holding on’…that same Westville side smashed everyone at age group level, just shows how things can change from grade 10 to 12….

@Grassy- This not Westville’s dream team. A very good side that with the right mindset can achieve solid results( aka Framesby) . My money is on the next few years for Westville.(Remember the U16s as an age group lost only one game last year). The current U16s were the most improved last year and seem to be maintaining that trend.Great depth too. This is Kearsney’s time though and the good money has to be on them . But you never know with a derby and if Westville can beat the spread then they can push on.
I started at Westville in 1977 and we never lost to Pinetown and so I am not sure about the” superior” win ratio  Also I think you are confirming Westers point about how history will get overtaken by being competitive. It is the nature of things.

@star: agreed star, but Westville vs Kearsney for no1 in KZN is rare occurrence. These are the two schools dream team years. Also, it won’t be for number 1 if Westville don’t play Glenwood which was due to played at Glenwood this year. The true Highway derby is actually Pinetown vs Westville, but unfortunately Pinetown have drifted far off the pace. Pinetown probably actually have a superior win ratio over Westville…

History is only part of the story and as Westers says it must be competitive. The winner of the Westville /Kearsney game will probably go on to be No 1 in KZN and at 26 games all it cannot get closer than that. But for me the edge is the connectivity of the event. When Paarl Gym play Boys High the town baker will be supporting one side and the butcher the other. Families will be split down the middle. I have had personal experience of this when myself and my brothers played in several Hilton v House games. The family was torn apart and the banter and recriminations are still ongoing. That is what makes a true derby.

@HORSEFLY NO.1: Refer my replies to Grassy and Playa. Note I experienced the same with the Landbou/Oakdale derby which I attended last year. Great to watch live with an awesome vibe and Kaplan reffing, but watching it on YouTube afterwards did not do it justice. I guess live memories are the best. I am all for watching the KZN teams on Telly though, as it at least gives an outsider an idea what you guys are on about, so will still watch/pvr the KZN games and any others that are shown.

@Playa: as I said to Grassy, it is always subjective. Maybe we look for different things when we watch SBR, and to me the quality, skill and intensity was lacking. To put in perspective, I similarly did not enjoy the Boishaai/PRG game for the same reasons. It is this my opinion though, so I am not arguing with you on anyone here.

    @Ploegskaar:
I get where you are coming from,in terms of quality of the two teams the Grey game wouldve been better to watch whilst the DHS team was a real bad one and the Glenwood side a great one that didn’t live up to their full potential so if you are looking at it from that eye I completely understand.

But, overall that was a great game. The atmosphere, sportsmanship, comeradrie etc were just fantastic! The weather wasn’t great but the two teams didn’t let that stop them.

    @grassy
I watched a lot of the TV games last year and I have to say I didn’t find Grey/Boishaai too intersting but Grey/Affies was amazing. But for me, the best game to watch was indeed the Glenwood/DHS game. I think both school masters can be very proud of their boys last year! Great scenes. @Playa:

I thought the DHS-Glenwood game was the most alive game, including the atmosphere of the games I saw on tv last year. The Boishaai-Grey game was a tighter affair, yes. But as far as overall production game…the Durban game was head and shoulders above the one in Paarl.

@Ploegskaar: Ploegie, yes and Horsie would have a personal interest in the game, like I did. As you have no affliiation with Glenwood and DHS it would have seemed boring. However, Boland Landbou probably play Boishaai and Grey Bloem regularly it would of course be closer to your heart. Thank goodness it’s all about differing opinions and likes or the world would be boring. For the 30,000 or so DHS and Glenwood old boys still alive I’m sure it was the best game of the season, especially for us hoppers!!

@HORSEFLY NO.1: Just remember that you tend to enjoy the game and the atmosphere more when you watch it live. Please don’t be offended, I know you are not the type to overreact, but from a neutral’s perspective it was the poorest of the televised SBR games last year, with the Boishaai/Grey game (from an even more neutral perspective) the best of the lot.

@Westers: Yes agreed, but if you want to call it classic clashes or derby day then it needs to be just that. Premier Schools would be fine for new derbies like Kearsney vs Westville etc. The College 150th celebration Founders day game vs Glenwood will be epic this year. I would love to see the Westville vs Kearsney game on TV as it’s the Highway Derby!

@Grasshopper: Neutrals would rather watch a game where the result could go either way when predicted beforehand – not simply because it is a traditional fixture. Not sure that games involving DHS would attract much interest currently. Hope they prove me wrong.

Kearsney vs Westville and College vs Westville would make better viewing IMHO.

@Grasshopper: @Slam: Not all FNB “classic clashes” are televised. FNB has cut back on the budget and they merely sponsor the day without TV. Many of those schools have tied themselves to contracts commitments- useless ones. I believe it excludes events such as Premier and they now sit with their fingers up their — No use blaming Premier or Tiaan Strauss. On the other hand, ala Naas, many of the schools which have committed themselves to FNB, may as well stay with them. because it does not mean that if they escape from FNB, that they will get TV time with Premier. This is an economic venture, not philanthropy at work. By the way, there are bigger and older derbys than the ones mentioned by you. And there is a nice photo on GCBs FB page of the launch in Sandton

    I think in KZN the biggest and oldest derbies are as follows;

    DHS vs College
    Michaelhouse vs Hilton
    Glenwood vs College
    DHS vs Glenwood

These 4 should be all on TV.

Anyone know which schools are tied in with the FNB broadcasting rights contract? Out of interest what did FNB pay individual schools to broadcast games?

Agrees with @star and @buffel traditional rivals are forged from local derbies not games like Glenwood vs Monnas or Maritzburg College vs KES. Question is are some of the traditional derbies still included in the FNB contract?

@star: I think you hit the nail on the head- this is supposed to be traditional rivals and those are found from years of contesting local games. Glenwood /college, dhs/college etc. These out of town games only came into being recently after the advent of the festivals around the country. Kearsney/westville is always a hotly contested fixture and this year;s addition would have been great for followers of school rugby.

@Grasshopper: You are 100% correct. It’s seems as if they had to fill the schedule; some playing more than one, MC vs KES and the worst so called derby between GW and Monnas. Tiaan did well in bull dusting his way into the limelight. Never thought a tough nut like him would sink to such levels. Also, this rubbish is damaging SBR as it is all about eggo’s again. I bet HC and MHS scoffed at the idea and had Tiaan on his knees begging for the biggest derby match in KZN. Next best MC vs GW then sadly KC vs WV. ‘Premier’ do us a favor…

@star: boet, you are correct about Glenwood vs Monnas not being a traditional derby but I can name a few derbies in KZN far more traditional than Kearsney vs Westville. Glenwood vs College over 90 years, College vs DHS over 100 years, Michaelhouse vs Hilton over 100 years and the biggest Durban derby DHS vs Glenwood also over 90 years. Glenwood have played College over 150 times! Westville vs Kearsney and Westville vs Glenwood are new derbies…

Dit gaan dus nie oor Landbou nie (dis i.m.o.

Reference is made to ” traditional interschool rugby rivalries” KES v Jeppe and Paarl Gym v Paarl Boys High are obvious ones. I am not so sure about GW v Monument and KES v MC. Kearsney V Westville would be my choice given over 50 years of playing and are currently 26 victories each with one draw.

@Ploegskaar: And apparently a common interest in the Sanparks stuff as well. Always try and fit a couple in a year – Kruger in December, Hluhluwe-Imfolosi a few times. End June is my big trip of this year which is 12 days in the Central Kalahari. Self drive into Passarge Valley via Rakkops.

Our paths will cross, unless you see me coming first 8-O

@Gungets Tuft: Let’s just say it was also not the BizSport Festival, hope that narrows the search down. Nothing wrong with a dram of JWB, GT, or the Pudding of Porras as I know it, have a toot for me, I only stick to beer and wine nowadays. Glad you were entertained by the other blog, think the site can do with an injection of a bit of rough stuff to balance all the stiff upper lips, IMO. Will unfortunately have to skip WK this year with a choir tour to Bloem, a couple of annual Sanpark trips on the cards and a foodshow in Germany to attend. With wine and SBR in common though, the time and place will find all of us at some stage in the near future, and what a multi-cultural experience that will be!

@Ploegskaar: I didn’t note the undercurrent in the tweet. And you have me investigating other festivals now.

Hoe meer dinge verander, how meer bly hulle net dieselfde.

En nou is my kopseer erg genoeg om my na die bottel JW Black Label to lei.

If you guys are all coming up to Wildeklawer then it could be an interesting week. I may need to park my towtruck and visit Maritzburru to witness it.

@Ploegskaar: Ploeg ek is dood ernstig vandag. Ek is stom.
Nee hel man dit is hartseer.

BL/Gim, BL/PRG, BL/Wynberg, BL/Bishops of selfs BL/Drostdy sou doen. Klink na ‘n kliekerige affere die, amper soos BHP se rankings, so dan eerder ‘n geleentheid vir die selfpromosie van ‘n uitverkose paar as blootstelling van vele.
