NMI Toyota Noord Suid 2024 – 10th birthday

10 Years of NMI Toyota Noord-Suid!

From the humblest of humble beginnings, Pieter Rossouw and his fellow organisers and generous sponsors worked hard to turn it into one of the premier schoolboy rugby festivals in South Africa. To commemorate 10-years, two Old Boys matches have been added to the programme which includes a full 2nd XV fixture list and importantly offers all schools an extra rest day in line with putting player welfare top of the priority list.

Thanks I appreciate your views. I am sure the boys will give their best for the school , the jersey and their coaches. It is a very young team with 50 % still 0/17. They will just need to take it game for game and most importantly enjoy the ups and the downs. We will all want our schools to win but this is in the first place just school boys receiving education lessons to equip them for life after school. And let’s face it there are no easy games for any of the top tier teams anymore.

Have been thinking about the GCB loss and the impact on this season. We may see two different approaches by coaches from here. Some teams may opt for a more conservative approach and really push for that no1 spot now. Others, I feel, may see this as an opportunity to play more high-risk, as nothing will top this upset. A GCB loss should really take the pressure off for everyone in my opinion, so I hope for the latter. Either way it sets up for an even more exciting season, while also acknowledging GCB’s enormous impact on SBR

Very easy to explain: Only played 3 games. Loads of youngsters, you are almost guaranteed they will get better as the season progress. They have a slick 10 that kicks accurately. They have Sean Erasmus.
Last but certainly not the least – for them the culture differs vastly from other schools. The ‘winning at all cost’ motive is not present compared to other schools. They do have, in my book, a ‘never say die’ attitude that I have not seen in a very very long time.

Ek sal verbaas wees as PRG top 5 maak.

My vraag was WAAR was die eerste 3 NoordSuid Toenrooie gehou?

Dude, Grey College are the standard setters for World School Boy rugby! They would thump the UK No1 Harrow School and same with NZ, Aus etc.Savour the win, we still do at Glenwood from 2006, plus the handful of wins vs Affies. Those heights seem miles away for us now as we’ve dropped out of the top 30. But sport and rugby form come and go like tides, Glenwood, like Jeppe, will be back. Schools with that sort of history just do. I genuinely thought Grey by 50, like I always do when they play away from Bloom, and by 70 at home blown short. The problem is to maintain that, hard to reach those heights again. Knowing the rugby gods, Jeppe might lose to Parktown or something now…

@Snelvuur (Comment #285) Jeppe have a tough season ahead …. I was one of the people who questioned the sanity of playing HJS and Grey College three days apart ….. however the euphoria of today has been unbridled….. don’t know what will happen in the rest of the season… but can tell you if there are no injuries to this starting 15 we may ask some Questions when we come back to Pretoria on the 20th April and then when we visit Krugersdorp in July …. might be back to back strong seasons which would be awesome….. but last year thought beating Monnas for the first time was sweat….. this takes the cake ….. although we been close against Affies on number of occasions and never tasted victory….. beating Grey College…. I mean Grey Freaking College…. that is huge …. well done to the young man on the field today they really made our day ….. can tell you in 2002 Jeppe won 3 games in that season one of them being Kes and till today some of us still consider 2002 a successful year at Jeppe….. this year already we have won against PTA boys High and Grey College….. pipe dreams when I was at school absolute pipe dreams ….. the season is already a success 🙌 in my books…. As your comment implies, the big challenge for Jeppe will be to back this up now. That’s what separates a good “flash in the pan” performance from a good side: a good side can go again the next week and back up a legendary performance the previous week with another. This Jeppe side has a lot of good ingredients – chief among them being an ace goalkicker. I could see them giving Monnas’ porous defence some difficulty (although Monnas’ pack might have a say in that game). Affies might – might – be a bridge too far if they can sort out their backline, but hey, before tonight I would have said Grey was about seven bridges too far. So what do I know!

Dare we dream …. you write very well …. you can see you went to a better Jeppe than I did 😆…… let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves…. but if we can keep this team injury free…. and things line up as rosely as the euphoria of today has been we might not lose another match this season….. but there will be big targets on our boys backs …. first stop Queens College this coming weekend at Kes ….. Proud member of the Jeppe Family…. You know our school song says we belong and today all across the world Jeppe old boys are sharing the score in disbelief … Someone asked me if we are sure it was not the cherries we played against……. but absolutely amazing win by our boys today….. we always seem to lose the close ones especially to those people from Louis Botha Avenue….. however today I am shocked 😲 absolutely shocked guts and the stuff of legends is what that last 10 minutes represents

Proud is an understatement for what I am of the joes and how far this school has come. What a win for the school. Easily our most famous..

As far as the game is concerned, I must agree with a lot of the sentiment shared already – that Grey were shocking today. I was shouting at the television at 22-19 when we elected to kick again, and missed, I thought we should’ve sent it into touch for the kill, I thought Grey were on the ropes.. I get so much anxiety watching Jeppe manage these tight situations because we never get it right ; 2014 Affies, 2018 Affies, 2022 KES, 2023 Affies, 2023 KES (1st leg), even the 2023 second leg against KES when I felt the game was done and we’d won, they dangerously went full throttle for another try. They got it luckily that day to make the score look a little more convincing – but generally the boys give me stress😂.
Back to today I wonder really what Grey were doing last night. Grey had a lineout and there was a specific penalty they gave away I recall where the ref told them exactly what they were about to do wrong, and they went ahead and did it exactly. Handling error after handling error, I can only imagine the frustration from the bench. Grey’s kicker also can’t be trusted. All this makes for your opponent to begin to believe, a little.
For Jeppe now, how high is the ceiling? There’s a certain Affies game upcoming this season, coincidentally right there where they’ve just slayed Grey. Monnas away this season as well after a good win last season, and obviously the double header with KES. Maybe let’s not get too carried away, but after today, they’ve brought it on to themselves.

Fully deserved by Jeppe. They put Grey under pressure and the Jeppe kicker was a thorn in their side as they knew he wouldn’t miss a penalty. Amazing to see Grey panic though – with their pedigree, it’s not something I’ve seen before. Mistake after mistake but Jeppe forced them into the mistakes. A win for the ages…..

Awesome result for JEPPE. And that after they lost 3 of their first 4 line outs, and looked under the pump after conceding the second try. Incredible guts and mongrel, and not a little skill and composure. How did Grey get sucked into that dogfight? Jeppe’s pack was relentless, the 8 and 7 standing out. A famous win for Jeppe, plaudits to Grey for being the standard bearers in SA schools rugby, but today was just Jeppe’s day.

Lots of BMT from HJS to pull that one out of the fire. But geez, the set phases were really, really poor from them. Definitely something Affies can target at Wildeklawer. Garsfontein will be kicking themselves – really let HJS off the hook. No way they should have lost that game with 5 minutes to go.

Something to cheer you up further: I can confirm that the lock involved in the incident against Affies is not in the starting line-up for PRG’s game tomorrow. I assume this is due to the incident, but I have not seen the bench, so I don’t know whether he is listed there.

Incredible, incredible effort from the Jeppe Boys! You deserve all the plaudits you will undoubtedly get. Insane amount of heart shown from the gents. Lots to work on for Grey. This was probably the worst Grey performance I have ever seen – so, so sloppy and error-prone. The fact that they do not have a reliable place kicker for the first time in forever also really hurt them.

I think both of you are right, in a sense. Rugby remains a testosterone-filled game and sometimes that will boil over. There have been hundreds of such incidents: from Uli Schmidt, to Bakkies, to that guy from Grey that stomped on the Affies guy’s head a few years ago, to about a million others – from each school and each team over the game’s history. In that sense, the possibility for things to boil over is part of the game. HOWEVER, that does not mean that we should not look to minimise these events as far as possible: that is why these types of actions are now straight reds and why players that are guilty of these actions are suspended. I hope that PRG will take the appropriate action (in my day, in addition to being suspended for the next week, you were also summoned to the rector’s office), and I trust that they will.

Where testosterone and physical competition meets there will always always be confrontation its just how it is ,we make rules and for the most part we follow them ,however sometimes the primitive brain takes over and there’s not a lot we can do about it ….especially amongst boys at that age who have not yet learned how to temper and control those primal urges ….hence my saying its part of the game ,always has and always will be,nature dictates that that is how it will be.

There are two camps in school rugby. Firstly people who want it to stay clean and pure. And in contrast people who believe rugby is a game played by men and men are inherently inclined to fight and rough it up. Why do you think rugby league exists? But I concede my emotions might’ve gotten the best of me, ergo why I only posted something 24h after the match concluded.

Why do people hammer that “the score is final” or “PRG still won Affies with only 13/14 players”. I think it’s impossible to have a constructive conversation post-match because people always use such retort which makes me absolutely livid. The reason I ever brought this up is whether the guilty parties will be punished. Because Paul Roos looks bad. And this is undeniably a test of the management’s morals and respect for rugby as a sport. Moreover saying that fighting is a part of rugby is such a daft and bigoted statement, because this is SCHOOL rugby and not much fighting was done. More like assaulting a defenceless opponent that has done nothing to you, but I realise that interpretation is more subjective than objective. But hey, I’m sure all 26 thousand and counting people who saw the TikTok left with a good taste of Paul Roos in their mouth.

Ek is seker dit gaan iewers hierdie jaar draai.

No-one is trial and I think we all know nothing further is going to happen, I just gave you the info, in my days this was all “legal” and part of rugby and afterwards we would have gone for a beer, but times changed and this is not the acceptable anymore, but as youre friend below (Matie) has mentioned the result is final and I agree so only gave you, my comments who no-one cares about on a blog where a lot of people comment, I still believe your team is one of the top teams for the year. good luck for the rest of the year and I hope all the players stay injury free.

The tip tackle absolutely should have been a card. It was poor refereeing not to give a card for it. I’m not sure to what extent there was any malice involved there, but it absolutely should have been at least a yellow. When it happened, I immediately said that it should have been a card. But I also have sympathy for referees in those types of situations – it was 40 seconds into the game and the tackle/contact area is becoming ever more difficult to ref. There was also a swinging arm tackle on the jaw of PRG’s one wing who dipped into the tackle – according to the letter of the law, that’s also a card but, speaking with common sense, it should never be a card (and I certainly do not think any malice was involved). There needs to be clearer guidelines and more consistent enforcement of the laws, regardless of the time on the clock and the match situation.
    @Asterix (Comment #197)
Regarding the other alleged cheap shot – I won’t say it did not happen, since I simply do not know, but the video footage proffered in support of the assertion that there was a cheap shot is hardly conclusive. You see the Affies player cleaning the PRG player past the ball. Both end up on the ground, with the PRG player on top. Then you see a movement of the PRG player’s elbow, without any indication of whether his hand is making contact with the Affies player or whether it is making contact with the ground to push himself up. Again, not saying it did not happen, but I doubt whether the evidence is conclusive enough to say that it did.

But I also need to congratulate you on your win, Affies had their chances and according to me was the stronger team especially in the second half, but your players defended with everything they had and the scoreboard and the record books will show you won. The last tackle which was 100% legal and holding up the Affies boy was a match saving tackle and exceptionally well done.

Hi Snelvuur, maybe I am still old school so are following the rules so do not want to name the player or his number, if you go on facebook under the superssportchools rugby in the comments where the score is shown, there is a person in the comments who made a tik tok with Rocky’s theme song showing the other cheap shot on a Affies boy lying on the ground.

My feeling about the match is that the team believed their own publicity – even on this blog they have been crowned the Nr 1 team in SA for 2024. When you think you can just run onto the field and win all the matches by just being present and you then get dominated the way Affies dominated the PRG team you will find the yellow cards and foul play that PRG committed was out of frustration.

Affies should have won this match going away – the lapse on defense just before half time where there was no defender on the blind side and the handling error with an open try line and overlap cost them dearly.

Apart from Paul Roos’ 4 levelling Affies’ numer 2 with a cheap shot and then running away, there was also Paul Roos’ number 9 kicking the Affies player lying on the ground – for which he got a yellow. It should have been red!
Not just technical infringements as you claim!

While I agree that the lock’s actions were shocking, I’m not sure that I agree that the 5 yellow cards were a reflection of contempt or arrogance: 4 of the cards were given for technical infringements (the defence of mauls, offsides, etc.). Those are just penalties a team concedes when under pressure – nothing to do with contempt for the jersey. I fully expect that aspect of the discipline to improve. Of course, the lock’s actions were inexcusable, but I don’t think those actions and the other yellow cards received could be equated with each other.

I firmly believe that such behaviour is not a reflection of the school at all, and I may be melodramatic but these cases have upset me. The blatant disrespect and contempt that the Paul Roos team had for their school’s rugby culture and history as well as for their opponents was something that I could never have predicted would happen. 5+ Yellow cards are shocking regardless of the circumstances. But on the topic of whether the guilty parties will be punished for what they have done is a grey area. Because it’s no secret that the better your team the greater the publicity and especially for schools such as Paul Roos, publicity is everything. I hope I’m wrong. Because I still maintain respect for Paul Roos as institution, but team’s arrogance will cost them dearly.

Oddly enough I also watched a Paul Roos vs Jeppe game at SJC in 2015 in the rain. Very few people stayed to watch. I remember the Jeppe old boys singing at the start when the weather was still good. It ended being one of those matches where it was hard to play constructive rugby. It was the last game of the day, just after an epic match between Boishaai and Monnas.

Fortunately Jeppe came down to Durbs with their team containing the Big 3 later on in the season and I got a glimpse of those two gifted u17 backs, altho I must say Green did the craziest things that day against Westville.

Your boys showed immense determination and professional ‘ruthlessness’…. conceding yellows rather than tries. When I say they play to the very limits of what the ref would allow, I’m not belittling the team…in fact it’s evidence of a very good team adapting to the situation. Wish the PRG / GC game wasn’t always during SA Schools fixtures.

On a similar note, some of the best festival rugby I’ve seen was in the pouring rain on a muddy Monday after Easter, Jeppe v Paul Roos where Tyrone Green and his mates took on Damian Willemse and his sublime team…the mud a leveler, Jeppe tore into PRG going down 9-3 or something. The only live spectators were about 20 of us crammed together under the first aid gazebo, enjoying a battle for the ages.

Fair point, necessary to consider. Optics matter. On the other hand, I’ve sat many games very uncomfortably because some people will share space and/or make space and give up seats…while other people want to ‘keep’ or reserve open spaces for a friend and another and another. At Kesfest there is definitely too little seating room, find myself sitting on the grass amongst the teeny bopper girl crowds there for the occasion and social excitement not so much the intricacies of the maul or line-out.

Nories vs Stellies another good game to watch. Stellies played without Keiser for most of the match so for a team with no big names and no real X-factor they do well to stay competitive by playing as a time and trying to be good at the fundamentals.

Nories on the other hand are a team built around X-factor slash individual brilliance and they got plenty of it today to secure the win. Scrummy did his bit but the fullback Jade Muller had his best half of the season in the 2nd half and produced two very high quality plays that led to points and the win. The gap was increased by a sensational try by Cheswill Jooste. It was a lot like Samuel Badenhorst’s brilliant individual effort in the PRG vs Affies game.

I got so absorbed by the main game of Noord-Suid, I just remembered that the other Witbulle from the South of the Jukskei will also feel like they allowed a golden opportunity to slip today against a Winelands powerhouse.
Monnas had a few times where they gave away soft tries. It felt like their concentration/composure just let them down and Gim took full advantage. Otherwise it was a very good effort by a big Monnas team against a well-drilled Gim.

Exactly, the tempo at which Grey played was much higher than what any other team offered. KES never stopped trying though, so hats off to them.
Garsies was off on the day – more than 20 unforced errors, which is a mental issue – maybe too many playing out of position. Will have to lift the tempo and sort out their backline if they want to competitive this year. But Oakdale deserved the win, well done!
Jeppe in need of fitness and getting used to faster tempo play. They were good for 35 minutes, but when Boys High lifted the tempo coupled with smart support interplay, Jeppe was found wanting.

Very impressed by Oakdale in their Garsfontein game, tough tempo rugby, smart defensive system, a rugged team going to be hard to beat. Particularly liked the look of their 5 lock. Anybody have name, details (weight/height) on him, if we are permitted to discuss of course. Grey a cut above KES, as was HJS Paarl over Jeppe. Grey’s 12 vdMerwe is a class act, most of the others too…Jeppe might avoid a massive beating if they can replicate their first half v HJS.

About Heinrich Theron. So if I was recruiting for the Sharks, he would be Top 2 of the signatures I’d be after of all the u18 players in the country with the PRG lock/flank Riley Norton being the other. HT is nice physical player and hopefully he has a bright future ahead because he is really good.
But for the game Grey played today, to me a really mobile lock like Jayden Joubert is ideal. I would be chasing to get his signature for 2026
Felix had the much easier job tonight but still he was good at engaging esp on running attack.
Hardest job in the world is for a flyhalf to look good whilst on the backfoot. Moyo remains a good long term prospect but personally I think he can play better. Like his coach once was, he has to show he’s a general who is equally happy playing and making good kick-run-pass decisions while flat as he is in the pocket.

It looked like van Wyk was on a mission to outplay Ndebelele and also to tell him about it throughout the game. Definitely came out on top.

Pieter vd Merwe was man of match and I think him and Adams will be almost unplayable as a a combination later this season.

Felix, Theron, McClaren and the nr 6 for Grey were very good as well. From KES I am impressed with Moyo….class flyhalf.

Sorry. Missed your question.
Vintage Grey performance. Tempo and coordinated.
Pieter van der Merwe was excellent.
Big ups to the commentators for giving due credit to Phillip McLaren at 9 and Liam van Wyk at 2. Liam was on fire a few weeks back against Welkom Gim and is the form hooker in SA at the moment.
Ethan Adams returned from injury and had a solid first half.
The refs seemed to get stricter as the day progressed.
KES just could not get going and were about 34-6 down at the break. So the second half was just about damage control. Unfortunately buffering messed up the second half viewing a bit.
Considering how highly KES are rated, this is a good win.
KES showed a bit of what they are about in the second half but as mentioned in the stream, not being able to get Kebotile Maake going to try produce platforms was amongst the areas where they struggled. The KES back three look like they have plenty to offer, showed a bit of it late on. They just need better ball to work with.
Not the kind of game that played into the hands of big individual forward muscle performances but the young lock AJ Meyer is showing good progress for Grey.

It was an awesome first day. Games entertained. Right up to the end of the first half between HJS and Jeppe.

KES proved that their season build up of just one game was inadequate to play Grey who have been at it since February, even if they didn’t have the best immediate prep due to the cancellations at the Graeme Fest.

Oakdale surprised a bit today. They seemed a bit subdued in their expansive play in Thailand and the few games leading up to this big one tonight but really showed good ability to work spaces.

Garsies – how many obvious catch passes did they drop today. Boys thinking about what they gonna do next before securing the ball. Just one of those days at the office but must be so frustrating for their coaching staff because it came down to fine details who ended up winning and who ended up losing.

EGJansen came back in the 2nd half but too many mistakes made it very frustrating to watch. They should stick to the basics, learn how to run and pass and catch the ball properly, dumb back hand passes gave away an easy try and their game does not get flowing. Kicker must really place kick much better, and convert the tries. Overall for me not a nice game and poor tackling as well. This is a good team but execution still lacking

Super entertaining first half in the EG vs W Gim game.
Ronaldo Kiewiet isn’t always the most consistent player but when he’s on fire, he is a pleasure to watch.
Jansies have exciting backs but it still feels like their pack needs to do that much more to make the playing platforms a little more unpredictable for the opposing defenders. Give Juandre Jacobs just half a metre more and he will be deadly

Môre manne. Hoop dit gaan goed met julle.

Monnas het n moerse groot pak. Teen Welkom omtrent 840kg’s.

Welkom se drieë was verspot maklik.

I haven’t been staying in Pretoria long, but my assessment is that it’s unlikely to be a whole wet weekend. The earlier games should be okay, but the late afternoon matches could fall victim to the staatsdiensreëntjie. Not sure that’s advantage South across the board though – I think Gim, for example, would want to throw the ball around against Monnas’ giants.

Dag 2 sal ten minste twee vir Suid hê: Outeniqua en of PRG of Paarl Gim. Twyfel sterk of beide PRG en PG sal verloor. Noordheuwel-Stellenberg sal ook naby wees. Dag 3 sal 2 of 3 vir Suid wees – Grey en HJS of Oakdale.

I think the fact that Affies has three decently sized fields is the reason why they’re the better choice. Garsfontein doesn’t have the biggest B-field so hosting 2nd XV games on the B-field won’t be possible. I do think Menlo deserves another shot however the entertainment and the beer garden and everything Affies offers for all the supporters is just on another level at this stage.

A few bold predictions before the weekend:
    1. Best team (Results) = Paarl Gim
    2. Most Exciting team = Noordheuwel
    3. Disappointing team = Garsfontein – I think they will struggle this year as their under 16s we not that great last year. Hoping they have done what Garsfontein does best and get two or three key players after under 16. They have always been a great team to watch

Someone likened the Monnas 2024 pack to that of monsters of 2010.
Who could ever forget that year with Ruan Venter and Paul Willemse in the secondrow.
Paul was 135kg and altho he was a high profile valued SBR player, it seemed questionable whether or not at that weight he could be made into a useful contributor at a higher level after school. The SBR star was Ruan, who just seemed like he had all the ingredients to go to the very top in pro rugby. 14 years on and Paul through excellent attitude towards the hard work required to make it big, has had a distinguished intl career, been worth his weight in gold for France. Sadly Ruan seemed to pick up injuries at a young age and never ever came anywhere close to fulfilling the true potential.

Locks are in the highest demand in world rugby. They command the best salaries be it in France or Japan. No sub for being 2.06m. Its the best natural gift a player wanting to become a pro can get. There will be no problem for Jacques to get noticed. It might not lead to an SAS cap with all the good compo around but if the Paul Willemse work ethic is there and the Ruan Venter bad luck stays away, he can look forward to a good career after school.

The North South Rugby Festival, originally conceived by Menlo and Garsies, raises the question of whether these schools should also have the opportunity to host the event.

So gepraat daarvan: weet jy of Grey weer in die World Schools Festival gaan deelneeem? En wie die ander skole is?

@4×4: AHS Grey is always special, the midfield next year is going to be a war zone.😀

@Rainier: I am also looking forward to the prospects of Affies-Grey Game. Affies Outside centre was injured the whole year and only returned against Kloof, playing just 2 games, big lad. It’s going to be a very physical battle in the mid-field!

@Kaya 85: I am not allowed to agree or gush about his play, as that somehow demeans other players.

But this will probably be his 13 next year…

And here he plays 11 as an /15 at the 2022 Grant Khomo final…

@OUD ANKER: Was there a post by Beet somewhere that listed top schools’ grade 11 players? …

@Rainier: Grey’s inside centre of 2023 is an absolutely awesome player. Can’t wait to see the Grey-Affies game next year…

Eks seker daar is nog baie sulke opgewondes so Grey nie regtig uniek in daai opsig nie.

@JongMatie: My tong was effe in my kies.

@NieZandbergNie: Glad Menlo is there … they have been part of Noord Suid from the start.
    Believe the turnaround will come.

Grey / Gars definitely the showstopper.

Is it wise to include Menlo Park after this year’s dismal performances?
