As many of you who follow the Blog already know, former Springbok Pieter Rossouw with the sponsorship backing of Barloworld has been trying to get a new Noord-Suid tournament organised.
In an idea world if this tournament consisted of just the top six schools it would have seen the best that Pretoria has to offer namely Affies, Waterkloof and right here right now Garsfontein come up against the top feeder schools of the WPRU, which would definitely be Paarl Gim, Paarl Boys High and Paul Roos. Obviously if it was a bigger tournament schools like Boland Landbou and Pretoria Boys High would be included. Either way if organised, this could be one of the most prestigious festivals on the South African school rugby calendar.
2014 is proving to be far from an idea world situation though. In reality putting together this great concept of a tournament has proven far more challenging that I think Rossouw could possibly ever have imagined. Most schools from both regions have other commitments at the start of April plus an unusual series of April breaks has also worked against Rossouw’s plans. As a result Affies, Boishaai, Paul Roos and Boland Landbou amongst others have expressed little to no interest for this season. Also up and coming but not quite there yet Menlopark has to be part of North’s mix. So there is no longer a chance of seeing the best of the North against the best of the South.
For now the four-team tournament is meant to include Drostdy but just like Boland Landbou, they are committed to attending the Pukke Skouspel, a tournament that opens doors for Drostdy players by giving them a good opportunity to be noticed and gain admission to the NWU after school.
The Noord-Suid Toernooi bonus is that high profile teams Waterkloof and Paarl Gim are still on-board, so this event will have a lot of spectator pulling power and generate lots of SBR interest from around the country.
The big question-mark is who to get to fill in for Drostdy and complete the four-school line-up along with hosts Menlopark?
For this season and going forward, there is absolutely no reason for why we can’t have our own Noord-Suid contest here on the Blog.
There are two big decisions to be made:
1. A name for the N-S contest. It should preferably be something less lame than the KaapVaal Beker
2. The teams that should be allowed to participate. For example should the likes of Monnas and the Kwaggas form part of a N-S contest.
Anyway here is a potential fixture list for 2014 which may grow depending on your choices:
