Graeme College Rugby Day 2014

The annual Graeme Rugby Day takes place on Friday 21 March 2014 at Graeme College in Grahamstown. For Eastern Cape school rugby supporters, it does not come much this. With the exception of Daniel Pienaar, just about all the best Eastern Cape rugby high schools will be in action at one venue for one day only. There is no better opportunity than this early season festival to see what the respective schools have to offer as units and who the stand out players are in terms of size, strength, speed, and skills for the season ahead. Plus there will be lots of attractive rugby being played.

@Mike: Hey they gotta learn Muir would never have the forwards to compete against Grey although it looks like Muir will be playing a under strength Grey (less craven week players ) on the 17th May I think.

I think Grey vs Muir Under13A this year would be interesting.

@Queenian: No that’s just a rumour I’m sure. Drove passed the practice and everyone was there. Grey have the kind of problem you’d want to have this year in that they have more than enough players to choose from. The team is also full of leadership. With regards to Muir. Grey actually played a warm up match against them in the pouring rain last week Wednesday. The agreement was that the game would consist of 4X 20 minute chukkas. After the first 40 minutes Muir were 42-0 down. They Muir coach then approached the Grey coaching staff. I don’t know what was said but then all of a sudden the contest was abandoned and a last 20 minutes was played where Muir asked if they could attack for 10 minutes, and then Grey would attack for the ramaining 10. Muir scored 0 during their attack and grey scored another 3 tries during their attack.

@Playa: Muir are lucky they got the two centres back from Noord Kaap they are really good.

My son and his Under 13A Cricket team beat Kingswood at City Lords on Kingswood birthday on Saturday by 5 runs the snobs were really surprised thought they were bringing the lambs to slaughter but got a wolve instead.

@Mike: Predictions I will not give after Queens came unstuck against Grens but hopefully they will come right.

Will say Muir should win against Port Alfred they have a very good backline, although the Fullback is out till June and scrummie out for 6 weeks but they still should be to good Muir wing Xohile Danials must be EP Craven week player this year for sure really hot.

Mike I hear some of the Grey team might not play due to been naughty boys any truth in that.

I agree with Playa. on the day any team can win and result might swing in the direction of the Grahamstown sides. Only because they will have a lot of home ground support.

    My predictions
Muir vs Port Alfred Muir win by 20

Cambridge Vs Pearson Very close game. Cambridge surprise and win by less than 5. Pearson has improved a lot over the past few years and might just pull a surprise out of the hat.

Hudson Park vs Nico Malan Nico Malan should win after last weekend’s good performance, Hudson however can also surprise and worked hard this week after going down to Dale last week.

Grey HS vs Marlow Grey will have to be up for a fight this weekend. Marlow props are looking very good this year. Grey will have to much class in the backline grey by 10.

Framesby vs Selborne Framsbey is always good. Selborne excellent. If the Selborne backs are given space they will win by 20 or more. This is a must see backline. Steyn and Brits were exceptional last weekend.

St Andrews vs Die Brandwag After St Andrews loss to Daniel Pienaar last week. They migh come back with a big one this week. Don’t believe Brandwag have the class to win against St Andrews. St Andrews by less than 10.

Kingswood vs Queen’s. Queens by more than 5, Well its all up to S Jho the old Dalian playing for Kingswood. If he playes to his old pottential Queens will have a very long day at the office.

Graeme Vs Dale Two sides that will have the crowds on their feet. Hope the Ref is top fit and allows some running rugby. If it opens up Dale will win this one. Enjoy the running rugby.

    @Mike@Playa:

As playa said above I think Muir, Cambridge and NM shouldn’t struggle at all, the remaining fixtures however could all go either way!

Selbourne tend to underperform at the GC rugby day and Grey have had their troubles in the past against Marlow.

After losing big against DP i think SAC may just struggle against Brandwag, although as history shows SAC have only ever lost one fixture at the GC rugby day (Grey Bloem) so anything could happen. (Being from KC I hope it’s a repeat of this past weekend  )

The KC team may be undercooked for their match against Queens. They had a warm up match against Humansdorp this past weekend but half the backline were either involved in athletics or were injured I am told. Objectively speaking, I think Queens may just bounce back hard and pip us on the day.

I don’t know too much about the Graeme team but I can’t imagine that they will be stronger than what they were last year. Dale to take it.

@Wyvern: Alright…good to see. Now for Dale to revive the annual Graeme fixture.

@Mike: These are tough to call. One could say Muir and Cambridge are the only certain victors. Nico Malan could have the upper hand on Hudson. The rest could go either way.
If I were a foolish man, these would be my predictions:

    Muir to win
    Cambridge to win
    Nico Malan to win
    Grey to win
    Selborne to win
    Die Brandwag to win
Queens vs Kingswood – Pass…I really cant call this one.
    Dale to win

But take those with a pinch of salt.

@Mike: The outside teams brought a nice mix to the day. Must have been tough to get a team to commit given the many festivals that are taking place next year (and in close proximity timing wise).
Nonetheless, from what I can tell in this line-up, ALL of these games will be worth their hour, and I really hope I can be in the vicinity to catch the action. These are, after all the best the EC has to offer…just missing Dan Pienaar, and maybe Die Brandwag.
