Definitief groter as laasjaar.

@Cappie: Die getalle was omtrent dieselfde.

Things are about to change, if the rumours are to become the truth.

Afrikaans is gesond!!!

@Valkie: Yster wat so paar jaar terug by EG Jansen was.

Affies se getal is 313…

@Cappie: heeltemal reg ja – my stelling oor Affies seuns was nie akkuraat. Sal in alle geval as A++ moet deelneem a.g.v. getalle (Ja, ek weet dit word nie amptelik so gemeet). Hulle is wel sterk “up & coming”.

Dis maar dieselfde as vorige jare in my opinie. Natuurlik begin die termyn toetsreeks reeds more so die masjien loop mooi.

    4Sat.04MarKlerksdorpvsFlorida
Hier behoort Florida u14 en u15 te vat. Klerksdorp defnitief te sterk by u16, en Florida tops by 1stes.

Maar Ja, jy is beslis reg. Dit gaan by alle skole so.

Of is ek verkeerd? Het Tiger Woods kak geword van hy weg is by Hank Haney of het roos en roes sy loopbaan verwoes?

@Hooit: Daar word nie ‘gewerf’ by NHS nie m.a.w. daar is geen seun of dogter by NHS met ‘n ‘beurs’ of belofte van gratis onderrig of gratis koshuis verblyf nie.

Mens kry tawwe ouers maar hel mens moet darem luister as ouers dieselfde klagte hulpkreet. Wat jy doen is jou eie saak as afrigter of bestuurder

Net my siening.

@Hooit…ek dink by oop spanne defnitief. Jou standpunt heeltemal korrek.
Yes daar sal A span wees want daar is beter as ander.

By een skool.

My vraag aan die media bestuurder was toe “should the incoming coaching staff not be consulted in this process ?”. Wel! My die antwoord wat ek gekry het was “I do not know much of the going ons with the u/20 side. Can you please phone back later and hopefully I have more info.” Wel !

@BoishaaiPa: Thanks! As you know , Grey also claims Marcel van der Merwe. However, since he was in Boishaai from grade 8 to 11, we also have a solid claim, which gives us also 6 props. Marcel only moved to Grey because he was already unde 19 in matric, and therefore did not qualify for Cravenweek anymore. The Cheetahs contracted him to play for their u/19 side in his matric year.

@Kattes-Strofes: To add to your comment..Oom Boy’s younger brother Fanie played Tighthead prop for the Boks..Oom Boy played most of his test at loosehead but also played Lock, Flank and 8thman in tests. He was a very versatile forward!..Grey have in fact produced the most Bok props to date with 8, followed by Paul Roos with 6 and Paarl Boys with 5. They did however produce a whole lot more at provincial levels through the years.

@beet: Sorry for being so late in replying to your comment regarding Boishaai,s contribution of props.

The two Boishaai props in the SA Elite Squad is MJ Strauss and Joshua du Preez.Wilhelm Barnard, the Boishaai hooker , is also in this squad.

Yip ! You are right ! Boishaai have, for good reason , been labelled the prop factory. This already started way back, when legendary Boy Louw became a Springbok prop. He was followed by Piet “Spiere” Du Toit , Guthrow Steenkamp , Frans Malherbe and Marcel van der Merwe.
Currently there is another three Boishaai props playing Super Rugby. Thomas Du Toit (everybody expects him to be the next Boishaai Bok prop) and the two Cheetahs props Maks van Dyk and Charles Marais.
Furthermore, there is a host of Boishaai props in the junior provincial line-ups,as well as in the Varsity Cup competition.
Most of primary school parents, who keeps an informed eye out for potential schools for their talented kids, knows that if their youngster is a quality prop, Boishaai is the place to be.

I see Waterkloof and EG Jansen taking each other on in a friendly on 24 June. This is the first for both schools as they have always just played each other if they met in Beeld trophy knock out phases. Some great rugby could be seen on this day. Klofies/EG Jansen had some close match ups in Beeld trophy this year.

@Hooit: To me there is only one view people should take on this issue and it is to side with the boys not the RU. I just think that over two years most kids get many opportunities to try and prove they are good enough to run on wearing their school 1st XV jersey and after school those that choose rugby as a career will have years worth of chances to achieve their goals. However for the majority of school players there is only one chance to go to CW. You make it or you don’t. Lots of kids work their butts of and give everything they have to get there. It remains a massive achievement and honour for live. RU’s mustn’t take that reward away from any deserving player.

Honestly for RU’s who see using CW as bait or holding a gun to the heads of talented players, I hope the tactic backfires and those RU’s lose more than they gain.

And thankfully CW plays an ever diminishing role in talent scouting and recruitment. So if a good player does miss out on CW selection for whatever reason, he does not lose out in the long run. But the bottom-line remains : is it’s the kids who still aspire to become CW players. And obviously their schools get good marketing mileage out of selected players as well which isn’t necessarily a good thing either  – it can be just as harmful as RU interference.

@Hooit: I know that there was an issue this year with contracted players demanding to be selected to CW. Don’t know what the official stance is though. To demand a selection is however probably an ego issue where the union should not reciprocate as support would also just be an ego response. Could also be that the school coach just played the selectors!

@beet: I agree. You very much discussed the player point of view. I think the union point of view or reasoning to do the opposite is just as strong. I think there are good arguments for and against it. If the new laws are passed in order to give corporates a bigger slice of the union what is best for the player vs best for the business will be interesting.

    @Hooit:

    Question 1: YES.

    Question 2: NO

We’ve seen this sort of Union stance before and its just lousy for the kids.

Although the Unions have been trusted with overseeing the youth week process from start to finish and in some cases even funding it, CW and other youth weeks are meant to be the reward to players for performing well during that season at school level and not what benefits those player do or don’t offer their schools’ home province the year after school.

There are already rules in place that prevent some the best players attending CW, it’s just lousy when (coz it happens) more obstacles get put in the way.

There’s that research that suggests kids born in the first part of the calendar year stand a better chance of succeeding in a physique empowering sport like school rugby (or ice hockey where the research stemmed from), but in SA it does seem to have its benefits to turn 18 from July onwards, as it frees a player from being presurised to declare their after school loyalty ahead of CW selections.

Anyway my advice to any parents and kids who do commit their futures to other RUs and not their schools RU, is keep tjoepstil about it and white lie if need be. This information should not be voluntarily disclosed before CW selections and SARU should make it an offence for RU’s to ask the question or overlook a player for selection as a result of a post school choice.

I know that home RU’s have an idea who will be going where because an outside RU has to apply to them for permission to approach a player. A player can only officially be signed once 18 y.o, and this becomes disclosable information. So I guess, if there is a fear of being overlooked for selection, commit but don’t sign anything that SARU deems as disclosable information until after the CW team has been finalised.

Another interesting question. Should a union pick a player for Cravenweek if he has already signed/committed to another union after school?
Second question. Should a player who already signed with his ‘school’ union get preferrential treatment or selection above another player not signed or signed at a other union?

@BrotherBear: The selection criteria for CW is that there must be a whole front row on the bench and between the 6 players it must be at least a 50/50 split. So The Monnas and Helpie hookers cannot both play CW. Fortunately on current form it is my opinion that Glade and Asinathi will be picked as the 1st choice props on merit and at this stage deservedly so. Remember on current form.

@BrotherBear: I think the “selection criteria” refers to the quota system in place as part of the CW rules. In places where there isn’t an abundance of POC (sometimes feels like everywhere except WCape and ECape), when one sees quality players without much quota opposition around, it probably becomes a bit easier to make the long term selection predictions.

@beet: next year’s probable Helpie 6 and 7 are excellent in both areas of the game you mentioned – linking and running, so is the probable KES no 8. Lions have really good options there. Nice thing about both Helpie players is that they can adapt, depending on game and opponent weaknesses/ strengts.

Agree that the players in front row you mentioned are good, but surely that is reference only for next year’s selection process? Do previous performers just “pitch up” and get selected above better current performers? Seems like that is how some current Springboks are selected. :-(

There are also two under 16 Hookers coming through with one of them in Italy as we speak with that ‘Noordvaal team’ touring there. We have plenty of stock there (hookers)

For the rest, remember flyhalf van der Bank, he might shine again. At scrumhalf we have a cousin replacing a cousin at pace. I think that is enough said…..let’s wait and see.

    @BrotherBear: Comments at 53:
It is difficult to gain confidence in a losing team. I know it is the hooker’s job to throw properly. It often happened that he only played the last couple of minutes (when he was in fact on the bench). I really felt for Marx (I think it was the first test) but at his first lineout after replacing Strauss, Pieter-Steph called a split lineout. He called a front ball but was too late to support Eben getting (and staying) in the air. We lost the ball but it was because of the (lack of) support and not because of the throw. As is often the case, the hooker was blamed.

@beet, @Hooit: huge prop prospect in Ignis Meyer (Helpmekaar). He played lock until u/16 and converted to prop last year. Unfortunately a knee injury prevented him from playing at CW or AW. Very strong and extremely mobile (Os Durand style). Beast in the rucks. Passed his first test against Eldoraign captain and SA schools player with flying colours last year. Sure bet to see him go as far as SA schools next year if in form.

Judging by the SARU u17 squad Boishaai have ANOTHER 2 props (Marthinus Strauss + Wilhelm Barnard) coming through. They seem to be churning out good quality SBR props at a much faster rate than any of the top of the table rivals.

I watched a few PRG games this year and think Tristan Leich really had to man up along with his teammates as they had a very tough schedule and were not the biggest pack. He will be worth tracking next year.

My personal fav performance by an u17 prop was the Affies reserve James Combrinck who came on against Maritzburg College and had a blinder. He’s a big lad with serious mobility.

@Roger: He’s quite a flashy player so my bet would be use him as a wing or fullback but it all depends on KES’s needs and the style under new coach Nkosi. So maybe centre might be where he fits the structure best in the Reds 2017 team.

@Alan Morrissey: :?: I don’t know too much about the (KZN) props coming through. They are definitely not as high profile as this season’s guys. Two that I’m interested in seeing how they progress is Rocky Knox of MHS who I thought was really good this year and Sean Barnes of DHS who was invited to the SARU u17 camp as a prop, which has to in some way suggest that he can make something of that possie. After the rugby day at DHS, things should be a lot clearer about who the contenders are and what the overall standard is like.

Just hope everybody gets a fair chance. I also think Helpies have played enough big schools already and will play more big school as I believe players picked from big school playing other big schools do better at Cravenweek. It is much better to prove yourself week after week rathan than in 2/3 trials.

Lets wait and see. I know of boys that was not in any groups that are working their buts off.
Would like to see the merit/form player being picked and not the already in group players.
And for the rest it is not a Monnas vs Helpies thing again. Head coach moved to KES and Jeppe very strong candidates and U/16 last year had great talent. Noordheuwel now also come into play. Far to early to pick a team.

@beet, @muzi: Marx’s lineouts a bit of an enigma. Accuracy is easy to correct through practice. No 2 jumper normally easy but on no 4 and 6 the timing is all important as the ball is thrown before the jumper leaves the ground. That only comes through good mutual understanding and strong, calm nerves.

@Alan Morrissey: @BrotherBear: My opinion is that Kearsney would get max benefit by playing Richardson at 8. But then again I thought KES were wrong to switch Malcolm Marx to hooker for his matric year. It won’t help DR’s chances of making that next step up to SAS if he plays backrow for school and has to adapt overnight to hooker for province, unless KC gives him role of lineout thrower. Back in about 2010 KC did this with Nunes and Collopy.

@Alan Morrissey: Yes, the team has performed well over the years. But many players have not received the kudos they deserve. Surely a team with their track record cannot only rely on 2 or 3 good players. More than 50% of them are really very good, definitely best in province. A lot happens over time, as the kids grow. Will have to see what new season brings. I do know that some of the players have become even better over time whilst size has hindered others ( but not reduced heart).

@Alan Morrissey: Helpies converted to an Afrikaans private school a bit more than a decade ago. Before then they were a government school with a boys campus and a girls campus for decades. School experienced some difficult times before converting to private status, attracting excellent staff, very good management and have been growing since. The school attracts scholars in a radius of more than 50km’s with interviews held with All prospectives. Waiting list starts as soon as previous one closes. Presently about 900 scholars, boys and girls. Class sizes less than 20 – academics a primary priority.
