SA Rankings for 05 April 2013

Two websites: Rugby15.co.za and SASchoolSports.co.za have put out their rankings for the Week ended 05/04/2013.

At this stage apart from the top 2 on both, things look very different. Anyway you decide which is the more accurate one.

Personally I thought that Waterkloof’s victory over Boishaai counted for a lot, enough to at least rank them in the top 5 but it seems like the this is not the case according to SASchoolSports rankings which does not have them in the Top 30 at all, this despite Boishaai being ranked 10th overall on their list.

@BOG: If you ad a second line to the tank you can create quite a lethal mixture. Even the old ladies eventually start looking attractive. You must really come and visit. It will be like the old days. We can lie outside and grass. Like the good old days.

Is this the way to go.

Weight restrictions could soon be introduced in the state’s schoolboy rugby competitions after the tragic death of 15-year-old Jake Kedzlie – grandson of rugby league legend Tommy Raudonikis – put the spotlight back on the risk of serious head injuries in contact sports.
The president of NSW Schools Rugby Union, Colin Murray, said the death was a tragedy and that ”freak accidents occur despite the best of intentions”.
But, he said, over the past 12 months there had been more consideration given to the idea of weight categories, particularly for players under 16, to allay fears about the increasing size of some young football players and the physical risks associated with collisions on the field.
”The players these days are more powerful, generally speaking, and the physique of the younger generation has changed,” said Mr Murray, who has been involved in school rugby for about 40 years. ”It’s just frightening in a way, the physical development of that generation coming through now, and you just wonder where it’s going to stop.”
Shane Serhon, the convener of GPS Rugby, the most elite and competitive level of high school football, said: ”We do have weight classes on the agenda at the moment and it is a topic of much discussion.”
In Auckland, there are weight categories for club and school rugby union teams for the Under 8 to Under 13 competitions.
For each age group there is a ”restricted” weight grade for smaller players, as well as a ”capped” weight grade. In Under 8, for example, players weighing 31 kilograms and less can play in the restricted grade and players 47 kilograms and less play in the capped grade. A player who exceeds both weights must move up an age group to Under 9. The weight cap for Under 13 is 83 kilograms.
Colin Murray doubts there would be much opposition if a similar approach was implemented in some of the state’s school competitions.
”Given the level of discussions that have been held over the last 12 months, I don’t think there would be [resistance].”
Conversely, he said there is little consensus in the football community about the benefits of headgear, which is designed to protect the head from injury.
”There is the argument they can give kids a degree of recklessness,” he said. ”They might take risks because they think they are protected.”
Mr Murray said ”a very small percentage” of GPS players currently wear headgear.
Shane Serhon said while there are no regulations regarding the wearing of headgear, it is far more common than it used to be.
He also said there was medical supervision at all grounds and there had been no major spinal injuries in the GPS for many years. He said there is no doubt players are bigger and stronger but that the emphasis on safety was of far greater significance. ”All players are taught safe-tackling practice and safe ways to enter rucks and mauls. With much stricter sanctions for foul and aggressive play, players are less likely to offend.”

@Grasshopper: I believe this year we will do one over westville, but as you say, it is a potential banana peel . The glenwood second stringers did just as Kearsney. won 1 lost 2 but they managed to sort out Garsfontein in their last game. Back to the 1st team-Our fixtures against our private school buddies are at home so we should be favourites to sort them out. We owe them after some dubious calls from the ref,who on both occassions was the same individual- supplied by PMB SOCIETY – who happened to be a Hilton Old Boy. I must not cry over spilt milk. We were beaten by a very good Michaelhouse team and a good Hilton one.

With regards to your suggestion, I fear it will be a dismal failure, in fact a recipe for an absolute farce. Glenwood 1stXV – 5thXV will probably occupy potitions 1-5, followed by the mighty DHS u/15A team at 6, Mike Bolhuis at 7, Vrede’s 1949 1stXV at 8, all the GCB 1st teams from 1960 – 1964 from 9 – 13 and a Hodge-podge of Northvaal and WC bokrolletjies sprinkled from 14 – 20.

Hoekom reël julle nie ook sommer ‘n re-match teen daai spannetjie van Bellville teen wie hulle verlede jaar by Outeniqua gelykop gespeel het nie? @Tjoppa: They lost 19-12 to a very good Kempton Park side in 2012. We all know that Kempton went on to win the Beeld Trophy last year.
HTS Middelburg is playing EG Jansen next week in Nu Power, so this might tell us how strong they are.
I think HTS will do very well. Nobody is talking about Kempton Park. They finished top 10 last year and will have a strong 2013 as well.

I think currently there are huge distortions with the quality of opposition and home ground advantage. From a KZN perspective Westville has had one home game whereas Kearsney and College have had 4. I do not think GW have had one. Things should even out as the season progresses.

@Tjoppa: Hi Tjoppa… I disagree with you on their “downward spiral”…. They played in the Beeld semi’s in 2011 with their first team an lost narrowly against Kloof in the last minute who was rated no. 2 in 2011… Last year their u/15’s won the Beeld trophy and their u/16’s and 1st team lost in the Beeld semi’s… Their 1st team also won the powerful Centurion side in 2012. I am not sure who they played so far this year, all I am saying is that I think they are being severely under estimated.

Sorry just to be clear, what I meant was Nico was even further ahead than the players he played against. In an error where players were smaller he was a giant. I remember him breaking off the scrum regularly to bounce and run over players ala Jonah Lomu. He was immense, unfortunately he never got much bigger and had an average professional career moving to lock a few times…

@Buffel: I reckon Kearsney will win all their local fixtures, except your banana skin, Westville. Kearsney are certainly the best in KZN, but just as Glenwood proved. This was the year Keatsney expected to do well the question is can this standard be maintained for years to come. Hard to do when exceptional talents like the Doops only come around once a decade. They remind me of Nico Breedt in the 90s although I personally think Nico was better at this level. How did the Glenwood 2nds go at Monnas?

As the the silly season draws to an end and there is a lot of rugby to be played. We have our local season and only a trip to Saints as an outside fixture left, so we will guage how strong we are after the College,Hilton,Michaelhouse,DHS,Goerge Campbell and Westville fixtures. At this stage I think Kearsney are probably rated at no.1 in Kwazulu Natal but as I have said, we still have all the local fixtures to complete. An update, at the Monument 2nd team festival, Kearsney played 3 fixtures winning 1 and losing 2 by a margin of 8 points or less. Game1) MONUMENT 9-KEARSNEY 5. GAME 2) KEARSNEY 11 – FLORIDA 10. GAME 3) KEMPTON PARK 25 – KEARSNEY 17. good time had by all .

I see we have St Andrews at 11 well done to them and Marlow 20 also well done only concern i have i would say Marlow have beaten the better quality opersition like Noordkaap were St Andrews have played some weaker teams. The rest looks good, do agree that Union High maybe needs a mention they are really good this year.

@kcob: yep 8 if you include the Kings Park jaunt. Lost to Paarl Gim, Paul Roos, Garsfontein, Drostdy and Kearsney. Beat Framesby, Selborne and College in the warm up. Not a great start for us but not an easy one either. The Paul Roos, Kearsney and Drostdy games could have gone either way. I fear we will lose our Wildeklawer fixtures too, so really it’s just the local fixtures for a few wins, even that won’t be easy. Glenwood need to re access the fixture list and maybe try a few ‘easier’ tournos…

Three different early season rankings that will shake the riff-raff out come the end of Wildeklawer, but still the same wets **** that b****ed that the 365 rankings were subjective and bias towards Cape schools disagree and moan. Just shows, you will never please some people. For the record Beet’s unscientific 8-O rankings is the most accurate IMO as it is based on CURRENT form and results, which is all that should count. Formula based rankings which include past strength and results effectively favors and entrenches the same handful of schools every year and hedges them against the odd poor year, which allows the “unfashionable” schools to at best aspire to a 6-10 position when they have great years. Sela.

@Woltrui: Another “language barrier” thing then. Ohhhhkey dokey then.

I guess rankings and things need to be sorted out on the field, with actual fixtures between the teams and not in fantasy leagues.

I reckon we need a Cheerleading league esor, rankings on sheer volume, like warcries. Bonus points awarded for diversionary tactics like private videos and photographic evidence (down Bog .. it’s not what you think, this is a family forum!!!!!).

@Buffel: Sorry the SBR TS ranking is a week old. In that time the 2 significant results were College losing to Queens and Bosch beating Jeppe. In view of the College loss to Queens, they should be below Kearsney.

The 20-min per half warm-up games don’t count in any of the ranking systems. Even the College-Westville game at Wartburg was regarded as a friendly.

Self mis ek enige dag senior rugby vir selfs net sg. “premier B” skolerugby in die Kaap en verdeel my Saterdae tussen Landbou (vanselfsprekend die meerderheid), Stellenberg en ‘n paar Bellville en Tygerberg games.
