Match summaries of Wildeklawer Day 2…
After losing 36-5 to Glenwood and 42-12 to Hilton, it seemed like things could not get worse for Michaelhouse as far as first team rugby is concerned. Well it seemingly has. Between last weekend’s Midlands derby and a round of KZN regional trials and training, House has lost 7 1st XV players ahead of their away game at Kearsney today. …
With most of today’s Saturday games being televised, it would be good to see who you rate over the course of today’s action. Let us know who you’d pick for your:
Woltrui’s choices:
Span van die dag: EG Jansen
Voorspeler van dag: Loskop stut van Monnas. Frans van Wyk
Agterspeler van dag: Loskakel van EG Jansen Ruan Potgieter
Speler van dag: Morne Swart, no 7, van EG Jansen
Beet’s choices:
Team of the day: Monnas. There were some closely contested big games but nothing quite came close to the thrill of the Monnas vs Grey College game, in which Monnas did just about everything to deserve to win it but somehow didn’t. They should have taken their penalty kicks near the end.
Player of the Day: JD Schikerling (Paarl Gim)
Forward of the Day: Morne Swart (EG Jansen). Monnas no.8 Wiehan Jacobs also very good.
Back of the Day: Jurie Linde (Affies)
Character of the Day: Corne Vermaak (Glenwood) who put a nightmare first half behind him and did well in the second half.

Here are some of my personal thought on the games on Goldstones on Day 1

The other ranking systems are starting to look a lot like the SBR Thumbsuck now. The Thumbsuck is 1 month old now and comparing the current rankings to the first one, 3 teams have dropped out: Maritzburg College, Pretoria BH and Marlow which have effectively been replaced by Wynberg, HTS Middelburg and Oakdale. Wildeklawer is set to be a defining 2 match days for Waterkloof. If Klofies win both their games at WK, they will take over as the No.1 team in the country next week as far as the Thumbsuck is concerned.…

Using BHP’s ranking for this week and assigning a value based on a formula of 100 minus current rank to each school with the two invitation teams given the benefit of being ranked jointly in 85th position (100-85=15 points), the sum of each school’s two opponents was arrived at and used as the basis for determining who had the hardest schedule. Waterkloof came out tops. The school from Pretoria has to play Outeniqua and Paarl Gymnasium at this year’s Wildeklawer Skouspel. …
After Gauteng raced into a 4-0 lead thanks to outstanding efforts by St Davids and St Albans, KZN’s Northwood spearheaded by their frontrow trio put a spirited fightback to come from 11-3 down at home to beat a gutsy St Benedicts team. Westville backed up this first win in the compo with a very meaningful home result of their own against a strong Pretoria Boys High outfit. At 4-2 and with many feeling that the tail end of this compo will favour the KZN schools, it makes this weekend’s two games tie-breakers of sorts. …
UPDATED: KZN wins 11-8 with 1 draw.
There is a real McCoy annual festival in which schools from KwaZulu-Natal take on their Gauteng counterparts. This year as part of their Golden Jubilee celebrations, George Campbell from North Beach in Durban will be hosting this 20-school strong festival which consists of two match days, Saturday 27 April and Monday 29 April 2013. After the Saturday games, organisers will determine which KZN and Gauteng schools to pair up for the Monday fixtures. Their aim is to match strength versus strength.…
This formula-driven ranking system is the only one on any school rugby website to have ranked Paarl Gim as the No.1 team in SA last week. This week EG Jansen and Centurion make the noticeable gains at the top, while Monnas falls 15 places to the unfamiliar possie of 31.…
Paarl Gymnasium defeated Outeniqua 37-25 in an away game the many got to enjoy as a result of the Premier Interschools live T.V. coverage. By winning the game Gimmies effectively put a target on their backs as the new team to beat in SA schoolboy rugby.
The game was little like a “Rock, Paper, Scissors!” contest with the Kwaggas constantly opting for individual brilliance (scissors) and almost always being trumped by Gim’s teamwork approach (rock). …

How good is Outeniqua? Well this Saturday you don’t have to rely on a written report or word of mouth. You will be able to judge for yourself. The Outeniqua versus Paarl Gim game will be televised live on SuperSport 1 as a result of the Premier Interschools initiative to provide coverage of the very best of South African schoolboy rugby. BTW Gimmies are no slouches either. Prepare to be thrilled.…
The schools of Mike Fennell past and present have their work cut out if they want to achieve the desired results against strong midweek opposition.
Fennell the former headmaster and an old boy of KES took up the post of CEO at DHS earlier this year. On Wednesday KES are away to Affies, while DHS makes the trip up to Pietermaritzburg to face College.…
Along with the recently update formula that drives the BHP rankings comes a recalculation of who the Top 30 schools in SA have been since 2009 (including the present season 5 of 2013 ).
The rankings confirm that the organisers of Wildeklawer are pretty much on the ball when it comes to inviting the cream of the crop to attend the annual showpiece which will be held from 02 – 04 May at Maritzburg College in Pietermaritzburg this year.…
