Stellenberg’s Divan Batt is part of a select group of top coaches across South Africa who strongly believe in the added benefits of involving Grade 12 1st XV players. Not only are these older boys often bigger, stronger, and faster, but they also bring the crucial element of mental maturity, which in turn fosters confidence.
However, even Batt cannot overlook the exceptional Grade 11 talent at his disposal this year. In a break from tradition, he will field a Stellenberg side that includes six u17 forwards when the Jade Brigade faces Worcester Gim in their first proper game of the season on 08 March 2025. Among the forwards are rising stars like powerful lock Juvan Burden and his athletic second-row partner, Carlo Brink.
The Jades will be without key u17 flyhalf Ethan van Biljon, who is currently sidelined with an injury.
Looking ahead, Stellies face a challenging set of fixtures, including a massive early-season derby against Paarl Gim, followed by a high-profile match at the WP Schools Day against last season’s national champions, Paul Roos. But for now, the focus remains firmly on the task at hand—Worcester Gim. Coached by the highly regarded Jeff Fransman, Worcester is known for punching above their weight and playing with plenty of Boland-style flair.
