KZN vs Gauteng Festival at George Campbell

UPDATED: KZN wins 11-8 with 1 draw.

There is a real McCoy annual festival in which schools from KwaZulu-Natal take on their Gauteng counterparts. This year as part of their Golden Jubilee celebrations, George Campbell from North Beach in Durban will be hosting this 20-school strong festival which consists of two match days, Saturday 27 April and Monday 29 April 2013. After the Saturday games, organisers will determine which KZN and Gauteng schools to pair up for the Monday fixtures. Their aim is to match strength versus strength.Fixtures

@GreenBlooded: I remember reffing regularly at Mondeor a few years ago. All the rooineks in the Golden Lions somehow got sent to Mondeor while everyone else got the prestige schools like EG; Florida; Helpmekaar; Linden etc. :)

So have spent a good few cold winter mornings in Mondeor blowing the U14s before doing one of the seniors later in the day.

Wow – Mondeor seemed totally outclassed.

Wow, impressive performances from the Gauteng schools – much better than I expected; especially away from home. They are still a million miles worse than a few decades ago, but maybe there is some hope. I’d love too see some co-ed schools talking on Jeppe and KES like the days of old. That said, Bryanston lost by some 80 points to Saints last year, so a lot of work is still required.

@beet: The Kingsway vs Bryanston score on day one was 15 – 7 to Bryanston according to what I saw on Twitter.

@Tjoppa: Same with the KZN schools, Grosvenor is one of the roughest beach bum schools in SA, they last produced a KZN schools player in the 70’s….

@beet: Could this be considered the B Section of the Grogper Cup?

Natal Schools will take this easily as the Gauteng schools are all 3rd tier – only a few (e.g. Randpark, Northcliff) are hovering on 2nd tier. I predict a 14 to 6 win for the Natal schools. That said, I think that it is great that they have this festival – hopefully it will improve the Gauteng schools over time. One or two of the Gauteng schools used to put out 18 teams back in the day, but probably put out 8 now.

Also mostly 2nd tier Gauteng schools, great to see that the 2nd tier schools are getting a great tournament too.

Mostly 2nd tier KZN schools, only George Campbell and Port Natal hovering on 1st tier so methinks the KZN schools will struggle
