Final Schoolboy Rugby Rankings for 2012

Paarl Boys’ High School, Hoër Jongenskool Paarl, Boishaai, HJS and Galpille are the many names of the Western Cape dual medium school that ends 2012 as the top South African rugby school. In so doing they bring to an end a long streak of first place finishes by Grey College. Well done Boishaai!

The table below shows the final rankings for 2012 as well as win-loss-draw records, formula points scored and average points achieved. It also records where the schools finished in 2009, 2010 and 2011 if they were ranked. The most notable absentees this year are Monument and Bishops who are usually Top 10 finishers. Other schools that have been consistent in the rankings between 2009 and 2011 but did not make this year’s Top 25 include Drostdy, Rondebosch, Selborne, Tygerberg and Westville.

@Oldskool, exactly what I have been saying all season. Michaelhouse did not have to play 23 games like Glenwood did, in fact 10 less. Also, Glenwood, College and Kearsney tested themselves against much more difficult opposition. Glenwood played Paarl Gim, Noord Kaap, Framesby, Outeniqua, Dale College, Affies, Queens College in the top 25, plus College, Kearsney and Michaelhouse. Grey Bloem was cancelled due to snow. I don’t believe Michaelhouse played one of the top 10. With more fixtures comes more chance of injury and fatigue, also more chance of losing. Michaelhouse were good but not that much better than Glenwood who are rightfully ranked 21st….

Michaelhouse are ranked to high , they only played 13 games and did not get tested by many in the top 10 …Kearsney the next ranked KZN team played Affies , Grey Bloem and Paul Roos besides others as do Glenwood , College and westville play the tough schools regularly , my opinion is that if MHS had played another 3 of the top 10 they would have been eaten , then there stats would be played 16/17 and won 11 !!

@All Black, in all three draws Glenwood were quite well ahead in the games. College produced some brilliant get out of jail performances to draw. In the draw against Dale, Glenwood were ahead 20 odd points at halftime. What is seems to indicate is that Glenwood could not play for a full 70mins….except in the game against Paarl Gim where we outscored them in the 2nd half…

Hmmm. Hopper, 3 draws that should have been wins?

A pity Glenwood did not make the top 20 considering they beat Michaelhouse (ranked 9th) and Noord Kaap (ranked 6th). Also they drew with Dale (ranked 14th). I think top 25 is about right. If only they played to their abilities the season could have been so different. 3 draws that should have been wins. Also, the Grey Bloem fixture been cancelled was our chance to redeem ourselves, but alas did not happen…..anyway, looking forward to 2013 and let’s hope Westville and Glenwood agree to play each other in now the biggest derby in Durban…

For those who give a toss – the alternative Top 20 from 365.com (a.k.a. The World according to Paul) has the final rankings as follows:

    FNB Top 20 – 28 August 2012

    1. Paarl Boys’ High
    2. Affies
    3. Paarl Gim
    4. Grey College of Bloemfontein
    5. Outeniqua
    6. Waterkloof
    7. Noord-Kaap
    8. Paul Roos
    9. Dale
    10. Centurion
    11. Daniël Pienaar
    12. KES
    13. Boland Landbou
    14. Michaelhouse
    15. Drostdy
    16. Wynberg
    17. Grey High of Port Elizabeth
    18. Dr EG Jansen
    19. Kearsney
    20. Framesby

My beloved Glenwood does not feature in either – rightly so after a season that promised so much yet delivered so little and not to mention the off-field problems. Let’s hope next year will be better.
