I think playing this early has to do with the second leg this year being the 100th edition of the derby, and they want to sensationalize the occasion. I believe that had it not been for the introduction of the double headers and we’d continued playing the single game per season to today, and also assuming we played in 2020 and 2021, the 100th Jeppe-KES would have been at Jeppe in 2034. So I think the idea is to get this first one out the way quickly and then build up to that one, and maintain Jeppe as the hosts as they would have been in 2034. This of course could all be nonsense I spew and it all could just be a matter of the calendar and necessity as you mentioned, I’m sure we will get a better idea from the people closer to the situation on the 22nd.

Cheers pal, yeah, how could I forget Lagan Leisher?!! He was outstanding last season! Very good lock! Grady Ngui a quality loosie too, him, Risima and Nathan were a formidable loose trio last season, arguably the best loose trio in the province.
I’m helluva surprised such a big fixture has been scheduled so early in the season. Will be Jeppe’s 4th and KES’s 2nd as eluded to in an earlier post. Advantage Jeppe for sure but KES will be leaning heavily on their natural ballers and the side is stacked with them. Last year the 1st game of the season was against a very strong Noordheuwel outfit (I think they had a warm up fixture against St Johns earlier in the week), away, the REDS won fairly comfortably so I think the boys will be alright.
Anyway, I had to do a double take on the Jeppe fixture list. Out of 18 fixtures only Die Anker, PBHS x 2, Selborne, St John’s, Parktown are NOT contenders for a Top 20 ranking. Very few soft touches in the season. Having said that, KES’s itinerary is not dissimilar.

I thought you were in hiding, a strategic decision until you’ve gauged the strength of the Reds! Haha!
I didn’t enjoy the Garsfontein game at all from a Jeppe punter’s perspective, we didn’t play well, but huge credit to the opponent more than anything. It coming this early is what I do appreciate, to hopefully fast(er) improve their sharpness and match fitness, they surely have come out of that game better to play Boys High than if they hadn’t played an opponent that challenging – so we expect less mistakes, more fluidity, readier for a battle.
Given how many boys you have back from last year, playing you on the 22nd is something I am now looking less forward to, goodness me I thought it was way less boys than that?! McGurk I thought was in matric last year, Sam I am aware is the face of the school this year, I have seen Sam’s face this year more than that of our own headboy lol, he is your textbook kinda KES boy lol. Is Nathan that tall-ish prop with brown hair? That Chinedu, if it is who I am imagining it is then oh boy  and then Mbuyi who I think is a monster disguised as a human being, I think he will be massive on that wing, as he was already last season each time he got an opportunity, he will be phased by nothing this season. I have my money in the bank on the hope that the 22nd comes a little too early for you guys, and that just the solitary game against St John’s will have you guys stuck on an island as far as preparation goes, but given this information about your returning players, on paper you must be the favourites.
Our fixture list is the toughest I think I have ever seen a Jeppe set of fixtures, I believe our coach has alluded to this too even, but thank goodness they added Grey Bloem again, we have a 100% record against them you know, a breather for us at least  .
Returning for us as you mention the 2 big names are Talent and Poulton at 9 and 3 respectively. Just about in that bracket of “stars” who return is our lock Lagan Leisher, the guy who ended up scoring the try from that counter attack in the second leg last season, Grady Ngui at 6 (or 7), and Welpies right winger from last season Lindelani Nkambule.

Hey pal, how have you been?? Isn’t it great to be alive to experience another season of schoolboy rugby in this great land of ours! This is truly the highlight of my sorry life!! The first leg of the KES/Jeppe fixture is indeed extremely early this year! I won’t speculate as to the reason why, so far as to say there just so many Saturdays in a season and accommodating all and sundry must be quite the trapeze act? so well done Jem and friends!! KES have St Johns at St Johns this weekend (their 1st game of the season), while Jeppe play PBHS. The 22nd is a mouth watering prospect as is every fixture between these 2 champion schools! 18-26 loss to Garies suggests Jeppe will be every bit as competitive this year as they were last year. Having said that, last years vintage was something really special. The best Jeppe side I’ve ever watched (although I haven’t followed Jeppe rugby all that keenly). @wanza_15 maybe you can help us out with the returning players in the Jeppe squad? Sithole and Poulton are the one’s that stand out. Who else? The KES 1st XV hasn’t been announced as yet but I’d expect to see the likes of Reagan McGurk (9), Sam Bruwer (7), Nathan van Der Merwe (3), Michael Bownes (4), Chinedu (8), Jarrell Mbuyi (14), Indy (15), Sky Segal (13), Chris White (11), Andrew Jackson (10) all get starts this Saturday, all were capped in 2024. There’s a lot of returning talent in that RED XV and some incredibly exciting prospects too…. anyway, it’s going to be a treat and a privilege to follow the 2 Joburg schools this season. Having a look at Jeppe’s fixture list, they’ve bitten off a massive chunk. Impressive schedule. Daunting but impressive!! All the best!!!!

Thanks to Jeppe for hosting us! You have great people at the school and wonderful facilities! What a great day of rugby from u/14 all the way to the 1ste teams! Very competitive but in great spirit. Heard yesterday that next year will be an even bigge fixture and will be expanded to all the teams, not just B-teams like yesterday! Great stuff! You have a very good 1ste team and I have no doubt you will be able to hold your own this year! Best of luck for the season!

Interesting question… I think that a lot of credit should go to every single teacher who developed a boy! I don’t think that could ever be taken away, the 7 years in primary school also played a massive role in developing skills! I don’t really get your point though except that you are against boys moving schools after grade 8. Please always remember that this is a free country and freedom of choice is one of our most basic constitutional rights, I trust you can appreciate that. In my opinion NO school owns a player. We have had a number of boys leaving Garsies as well looking for greener pastures, in fact we had some leave us at the end of last year in their grade 10 year to some neighbouring and KZN schools. It is what it is. If someone leaves your school it means they never really belonged there and I respect that. I just think you have a personal issue which might have happened to you and you feel hard done by. I can appreciate that. Anyway, be that as it may, I don’t intend in getting involved in this age old debate.

By the way – I heard that Boishaai has two brand new u/16s from Durbanville… Funny that no one is making a song and dance about that… I wonder why? Ou Boerboel will offcourse deny it or say it was for their own benefit…

    Have a splendid Sunday

It’s interesting how you’ve chosen to deflect from the original question rather than addressing it directly. The issue isn’t about parents choosing to move their children in Grade 8 or about scholarships, it’s about giving credit where it’s due.

The players who joined Garsies in their final years were developed by other schools for most of their rugby careers, and those institutions deserve recognition.

Instead of dodging the point, I challenge you to list the schools responsible for each player’s development until Grade 10. Let’s see some transparency and give credit to the unsung heroes who played a major role in shaping these boys!

I challenge you to publicly acknowledge and list the previous schools (except Oos Moot) that were responsible for the development of each player until Grade 11.

It is only fair that these institutions receive due recognition for their vital role in nurturing the players’ skills and character during their formative years.

Proper acknowledgment will highlight the dedication and hard work of the coaches, teachers, and support systems at those schools, who contributed significantly to the players’ growth long before they joined Garsies in there Grade 11 and 12 school years.

I thought Garsfontein were on the front foot for most of the game, we had some moments but it never “felt” to me like we’d win really at any point. Garsfontein have a massive pack and were pretty much bullying us in every scrum, I wonder if Djou or Grizzly could assist with that (the weight of the forwards).
I really appreciate a game like this early in the season, physically taxing, and if we can get out of it with no injuries (as we have seemingly, saw our full back hobbling a bit though) then I think it puts us in good stead for some of the early opponents – I just think it is a nice thing to win your first game, especially at home, which unfortunately we have not done on this occasion. Lots of new faces, I think we must be a little more patient and the heights of last season is something we must not expect.
I like our new 10, I am familiar with him, been following a little since u16, he was in the Grant Khomo set up, but I must say he is really volatile, I have no idea what he has in store next, I mean that in a good and bad way. He seems to have a solid boot and they trust him with long distance kicks so that is a good thing.

Michaelhouse were dominated up front particularly in the 2nd half. The lineout work was disappointing considering the number of tall athletic players they have. House backs a bit individualist but lots of potential. u17 fullback Jankowitz looks like a good prospect.
Ty Ax was a difference-maker on the day in terms of getting the scoreboard moving. His centre partner Cloete looked decent too.

I enjoyed the game. Liked the Jeppe 10 – good off the tee as well. Mistakes are a given this early in the season. Some nice depth as well.
Garsfontein has some really exciting backs that is going to cause headaches for opponents. Not sure about the depth.

Stirling vs Queens will be competitive. Also Queens has 5 players still busy with athletics so won’t field their strongest team.

Dale vs Brandwag should be a cracker. I think Hudson and Port Rex will have have comfortable victories. Queens vs Stirling might be more competitive than people think. Stirling are are really starting to pump out decent teams at junior levels, just a matter of time before they have a decent team.

    VOORSPELLINGS

Diamantveld vs Affies (A met 20+)
Jeppe vs Garsfontein (Dit gaan naby wees). Hoeveel spanne speel teen mekaar tussen die twee skole?
Stellenberg behoort ver te wen teen Worcester.

In my free time, I think about what my friends (foes) at KES are doing..
If the fixture list we have been presented is to be trusted then we play KES 22 March for the first leg at KES – that is like now-now lol. It feels like a week or 2 too early for me but what is even stranger (and I stand to be corrected) is that KES will have played just the 1 competitive game (whoever thay are playing on the 15th) versus Jeppe’s 3-ish (Die Anker, Garsfontein this weekend and then Pretoria Boys next)? I wonder what the thinking is behind this, again unless I’m completely misinformed.
I also believe that the second leg later this season is going to be the 100th edition of the derby, does this have anything to do with it?

Sjoe so early on in the season, its anyone’s guess:

Affies pack to bully the Diamonds and pave the way for spaces to open up. Will be good to see how the Diamonds 12 goes along with the flashy like backs.
House vs Helpies – hard to say. Both teams have some really good players. Might boil down to one well taken opportunity to separate them.
How many extra points are Nellies worth at their home in Mbombela? The Rooibulle might be looking for 15 extra points to win this. Not sure they have that many in their arsenal.
Garsies say they are undercooked, Jeppe has a warmup game under the belt. Might be Jeppe’s game to lose.
Stellies youngish team to win at home but looking forward to seeing what the Bosvarke’s Armaan Adendorff has to offer. WG have it in their DNA to play some very entertaining expansive rugby when they click while Stellies still need to find this dimension in their game.
