WP Final u18 trial teams announced

stoopstatslogoThe WP schools rugby selectors have announced the three final Under 18 trials teams, which will practice at De Kuilen on Monday 13 and 20 May 2013 and then, after any tweaking necessitated by injury, take on their Boland counterparts at Wellington on Wednesday 22 May.

As always, there are one or two surprises. In this regard, it is interesting to note that neither Nic le Roux nor Graham Geldenhuys is currently in the Rondebosch 1st XV. Neither boy is injured.

@Slam: I think the issue with the WP set up is there is historically more influence from certain schools there which must be changed and one way of doing that is having a WP Country Districts side.

Not saying the influence is bad in anyway but players from Paarl GYM/PBH/Paul Roos have a much better chance of playing for WP than other players there school set up is very much control by these 3 power houses.

sings.

@BoishaaiPa: Good point, why isn’t there a WP CD team involved in CW? Would make a lot of sense and would reduce the moaning, unhappiness, debate etc that naming of the WP side attracts.

@Tjoppa: Well that is essentially what happens with the CW and Academy sides…There is just not any other comp and why we would love a WP CD side for the Stellenbosch/Paarl and Somerset-West/Strand area and a WP side for the Nothern and Southern Subs.

@BoishaaiPa: Why don’t you guys do what the Valies does. Pick a team for CW then a B team for the Academy side and a C team for all the Transvaal Provinces. At least 75 boys involved and almost everybody good gets a chance.

@gimmie: Yes, it would seem that we dont have any merit having 7 players in the A-team given the results thus far. However, I do believe that there is such a small difference in the relative strenghth of schoolboy sides that a team results should not reflect on the ability of the player. It all depends on what type of game the coach wants to play and which players he think will be able to execute his gameplan the best…and of course as Tandem mentioned, combinations that knows each other. ..There might be an individual player in Position x that is marginally better than another but doesnt get picked because he perhaps doesnt quite fit into the gameplan or combination as well as the other player. Having said that and looking at the players and knowing their abilities, there is little to chose between any of these players in the 3 sides…They dont pick themselves though…I think the Coach has probably the most input at this stage. The academy coach get the second bite of the cherry!

@gimmie: Very difficult to comment . Probably they are going for combination . I think it is fair to say that Craven Week selections can always be questioned and that it is safe to say that there are in many cases various other options not chosen whom all would have been just as good . The question is how one can prevent that ? Probably by playing many more trials but when do you get time for it ? Top schools already have a full program and preperations for big games get disrupted by these trials so i cannot see how more trials can take place . I really feel for boys playing for schools not in the top tier because their chances of being notice is near impossible . I am massively in favour of a WP Country team to allow the Northern and Southern Suburbs schools to get more chance for exposure.

@BoishaaiPa and Tandem, what do you think of the WP A trial side. It’s clearly the one with Bothma, Scherkinling, Vd Merwe, Vermeulen etc. Gym has 5 players in the side and I think all 5 have proven themselves with 4 of them having already played for WP last year (Bothma, Schirkerling, Vermeulen and Hermanus) and Oosthuisen again Saturday proved himself as a class act. I do not think we should have more then 5 Gymmies in the starting A 15. I am however surprised with your 7 players in the first 15. Do you think that they all merit selection? Is it not a few too many given your performances thus far? I feels wrong to me that our two schools should have 12 players in the A team, when both schools are not right up at the top in terms of performances and results. If seven are to be selected for WP there is going to be a lot of pressure on them and your team to justify their selection. You know these players better than I do so it would be interesting to get your views.

@Ploegskaar: I think he is, I am not sure. Selectors are 3 from WP Union (Including the Convenor) , One from Paarl School, One from Southern Subs school and the two coaches from CW and Academy sides. That is the whole selection panel.

Think the final CW and Academy teams will deliver even more surprises, but the less said, now and then, the better. Congratulations to Heinrich and Matthys (BL), Tiaan (S’Berg), Jarred and Siya (W’Berg), TJ (Tygerberg) and all the Paarl Gim boys, you guys have earned the recognition to date.

The u/16 GK final trials teams have also been announced (only 2) and the looseheads picked has honestly left me astounded. These type of selections clearly illustrate why the WP CW teams have performed so poor of late and why CW has lost its appeal not only for supporters, but more importantly for many players. And Mr. Convener and your possie of useless selectors, I would really like to hear your explanation on the selection of that Bishops loosie who’s dad played for WP (better than Le Grange my ass!) and the inclusion of the Bishops boy (you know who) that was not even included in any team in the previous round of trials.
