Garsfontein’s Loss is Eldoraigne’s Gain

The ultimate Garsie will soon be bidding farewell. Retief Smith, the loyal deputy headmaster of Garsfontein, is set to take the reins as headmaster of Hoërskool Eldoraigne on 1 April 2025. Having joined Garsfontein in 1991, just three years after the school first opened its doors in 1988, Retief has become a cornerstone of the institution. He’s described by his peers as an innovative, principled, and warm leader who leads by example — a true embodiment of the Garsfontein spirit.

One of the students in Retief’s very first Afrikaans class in 1991 was none other than Johan du Plessis, the current head coach of the Bere 1st XV rugby team. Du Plessis speaks with high regard of Retief, calling him an exceptional human being with the kind of leadership that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact at Eldoraigne. The two share a close bond, which speaks volumes about the respect Retief commands from those who have known him over the years.

What’s even more interesting is that Retief’s roots at Eldoraigne go way back. In 1987, he completed his very first probationary period as a trainee teacher at the school. His dedication to education and the school’s values was already evident back then, and the School Governing Body has lauded his task-driven approach and commitment to good values. These qualities will undoubtedly be a significant asset as he steps into his new role.

But it’s not just academics where Retief shines — he’s deeply passionate about sport too. There’s little doubt that Eldoraigne’s rugby, which has faced some challenges in recent years, will soon begin to unlock its true potential under his leadership. With Retief’s experience, vision, and drive, Eldo’s sporting culture is set for a revitalisation that will bring the best out of both players and coaches alike.

Garsfontein’s loss is definitely Eldoraigne’s gain, and there’s no question that big things lie ahead for the school with Retief at the helm.
