So very tight at the top. All the interest has been on the top 2 who are only separated by 5 100ths of a point. Further down, the Northvaal battle via the BeeldTrofee is winding down with Jansies and Nellies looking set to contest for 5th spot in SA this year. In form Klofies not done yet in either and they could still claim a top 10 finish in 2013.…

August 07, 2013 SA Schools coach Chris October on Wednesday announced his squad to face England in their opening International Under-18 Series clash on Friday at the City Park Stadium in Cape Town.
Western Province and Paarl Gym No8 Rikus Bothma will lead the squad which features seven players who took part of the victorious SA Schools team last season. …
Valke Craven Week hooker Pieter Jansen, who also captains Dr EG Jansen, has been placed on standby for the SA Schools squad ahead of their under-18 international quadrangular series against England, France and Wales. Jansen’s standby is as a result of unfortunate HJS Paarl Boys High and Western Province hooker Daniel du Plessis, who has not regained full fitness after picking up an injury during the Craven Week final against the Golden Lions.…
Well I asked BHP to run the numbers regarding whether Paarl Gim could overtake Affies on the BHP SA Top 50 rankings (the formula driven ranking system). In a nutshell the answer is NO! No matter what Gim do in their up and coming games, they don’t have enough in terms of quality opposition to reel in Affies at the top.…
06 August 2013. John Mitchell, ex All Blacks player and coach who is famous for guiding the Lions to Currie Cup Victory, will teach approximately 2 400 rugby players from 40 schools around South Africa about what it takes to ‘Power Through’ from school boy rugby to Super Rugby and beyond. He will be demonstrating new techniques, drills and give guidance on other performance related aspects of training, like hydration, before, during and after matches. …
The KwaZulu-Natal schoolboy rugby season ended with an entertaining match on Dixons field in Durban where Glenwood hosted Maritzburg College. College got out of the blocks well building up a 15-0 lead by the 20th minute. Glenwood fought back with five tries during the next 50 minutes to eventually run out 33-15 winners and increase an unbeaten streak against College that now dates back to 2010.…
When BHP’s latest formula-driven rankings come out later this week, expect the country’s two top ranked teams Affies and Paarl Gymnasium to be closer than ever before in terms of points, following their respective derby wins over the weekend against the PBHS’s namely Pretoria Boys High School and Paarl Boys High School. The season is not over BUT one doesn’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that ranking systems and formulas aside, there is one “Moerse Groot” debate ahead IF Gimmies win their remaining games this season.…
This weekend’s outstanding 51-33 result by the Sharks under-19’s against the formidable Free State Cheetahs must have come a blessing in disguise. The Sharks coaches would have backed their boys to achieve this kind of success later in the season but following a home defeat the Lions a fortnight ago, the away victory this early on must surely have been a pleasant surprise to those who work with the team.…
The Durban Rugby Sub Union (DSRU) completed yet another successful initiative at the Varsity College Riverside ground in Durban North on Sunday evening where they hosted touring French club Montpellier. The DSRU fills an important gap in the age-group youth rugby market by providing opportunities for youngsters to obtain a high standard of training and compete at a level that enhances their skills. There is also the incentive to earn provincial colours if they are good enough to play at the annual IPT. To find out more about the DRSU go to their website at http://www.drsujuniorrugby.co.za/…

The longest running lucky streak on the SBR blog continues. Jokes. Well done to Gungets Tuft on winning the Superbru Super Rugby compo. Slam made it a College 1-2. They can’t even get that right in F1 these days, so great effort. Here is the full leaderboard.…
Maritzburg College and Glenwood, the only two KwaZulu-Natal teams that play third term rugby will be in action today on Dixons. The game will mark the end of the rugby careers of many open age group College boys who no doubt will all want to go out with a bang. It’s also the last game of the KZN tier-1 season. Glenwood still have one fixture after this weekend, an away trip to Bloemfontein to meet Grey College next week. Throughout today there are expected to be some very competitive match-ups all the way from under-14 up to the 1st XV game. All-in-all there are 24 games being played.…
Please remember the BHP ranking system is formula driven.…
Rankings 101:
Some Bloggers still don’t understand the concept of earning points per match according to the category ranked school you play and that the ranking is thus formula driven and not “adjusted” by BHP as seen fit. It is as simple as this: If you played and won high category schools you will have higher average points per game.
The idea that BHP has “given in to pressure” about Affies is absolute nonsense and absurd. Affies earned it by playing and beating Category 4 and 5 schools well and thus earning a slightly higher average game-point. Paarl Gim will most probably overtake them again if they win Interschools as Boishaai have a 5 point scalp! …
The 2nd weekend of Colts fixtures will take place at Varsity College this Sunday and will feature a match between a DRSU invitational team and the touring French team from Montpellier. The match will take place at 16:30 on the Varsity College main field. The tourists reportedly do not speak or understand a word of English so trying to find a suitable referee is proving a challenge. Joubert is a reasonably French sounding name? ;)…
The business end of the 2013 BeeldTrofee for Macro schools is upon us. Eight schools will battle it out for the remaining four places. The standard of the Noordvaal top tier rugby has been extremely high this year. There is a bottleneck at the top with no one wanting to give an inch. The result is that the BeeldTrofee for macro schools 2013 has no clear-cut favourite. Anyone of six schools namely HTS Middelburg, Waterkloof, Nelspruit, Monnas, Garsfontein and EG Jansen can win it. This is where BMT now takes over and nothing less that bring an A-game to the match-day will suffice.
Matches will take place on Saturday, 03 August 2013

Just as the first sighting of a robin signifies the start of spring in England, so the massive Interschools clash in Paarl, the SWD showdown and the start of the second round of the southern suburbs derbies on Saturday 3 August 2013 herald the closing stages of the local schools rugby season.…
Rudolph Gerhardus Snyman or just plain RG Snyman was we know the 2.05 metre tall giant from Affies has been called up to replace JD Schickerling in the SA Schools team to face England, France and Wales in an international under-18 series to be held during August. …

Long after people forget the match details or the final score of 51-21 from the televised Grey College versus Grey High game, they will still remember the horrific leg injury that standout Grey High forward Martin Groenewald sustained. For many including Martin’s teammates, the extent of the injury was almost too much to bear and they had to look away. It’s not something you wish to see happen to anyone, yet alone a player who has genuine potential to go far in rugby.…

Glenwood will be out to cause an upset when they take on Affies, the current number one ranked school in South Africa. Affies has won twelve games this season so far and Glenwood has ten wins to their name but significantly the Pretoria team will arrive in Durban undefeated while Glenwood has lost seven games this season. …

Colts rugby provides a platform for the serious and passionate player alike to extend their school rugby season by a further few months. These players will also compete for coveted places in the DRSU teams who will take part in the IPT in Pretoria over the Michaelmas holiday break. Trials will be held on a few short weeks at Varsity College.…
There’s a new No.1. Affies’ dominate performance against Maritzburg College has given them a slight edge on Paarl Gim by just seven hundredth’s of a point. The log looks very settled near the top. In the teens, Wynberg and Grey PE have made big leaps following good campaigns at Cape Schools week. Rondebosch have gone through a bleak period and might be a bit fortunate to only fall seven spots. Their early season form has definitely come to their rescue. Maritzburg College and Kempton Park are other schools that have suffered major drops.…
You just gotta love schoolboy rugby! There are so many things to enjoy about the game being played on the field and when you can add unpredictability of the outcome to the mix, it just makes it that much more entertaining. At the start of this season and any season for that matter, in my mind at least, this Grogper Cup, a made-up tournament between several KZN and Gauteng English-medium schools should have been a foregone conclusion.…
In order to set the record straight, the Blue Bulls replied to the comment below made on this website:…
Marlow recorded a convincing 22-3 win at home against St Andrews to confirm that they are the province’s number 2 rugby school behind Grey High this year.…
It’s still early days still but the indications are that the Bulls are a notch above all their opponents in this years under-19 national championship. A convincing 9-try, 61 points drubbing of the Leopards in game 1 of the season didn’t say too much on it’s own at the time but when the Leopards went down to the Cape and beat the unsettled defending champions Province albeit with entirely new personal off course, sudden the Bulls victory took on new meaning. …
The Golden Lions Rugby Union underlined their importance to the continued well-being of the South African rugby with two good road wins against the Sharks on Friday. In the under-19 game, a 67th minute try by EG Jansen Old Boy Kyle van Dalen sealed the deal as the Lions triumphed 21-13, denying the Sharks a bonus point in the process. In the under-21 game the visitors from Jozi had matters under control from the first half, building up a 17-0 lead at one stage and then holding out to win it 24-17 against a fairly competent Sharks team.…
Home team Paarl Boys High scrapped home 21-20 on Brug Street against Paul Roos thanks to a late try, scored with less than 3 minutes left on the clock. In so doing the Blue Army extended their winning streak against the Maroon Machine. The weather conditions were poor but the boys still managed to put on a great entertainment package with five tries thrown in. Also outstanding on the day was the singing by both sets of schoolboy supporters and the settling at Brug Street seemed to amplify their great school spirit.…

Paarl Boys High have an astonishing school A-team record in Western Province inter-schools at the moment. They have lost one A-team game in sixteen matches this season. This puts them top of the pile in the province that we need not remind everyone, has won the under-18, under-16 and under-13 national provincial titles in 2013. …
I wanted to write this blog to add some counter balance to some of the comments that had been made about the Glenwood coach here and elsewhere over the years. This is by no means an attempt to change course on many of the issues that have impacted on KZN schools in recent times which I for one feel very strongly about but it is an effort to shed more light on the massive contribution that Sean Erasmus has made and continues to make as a rugby coach at various levels.…
