@Queenian: i was a hostel boy at DP my parents lived in Malmesbury, i am now 2 years in Uitenhage, moved to be closer to my fiance as she grew up this side and it was getting rough with the traveling costs.

I remember in 2002 we played at Queens under 15 festival, we played Selborne,Hudson and a Border development team. Is that festival still on or not?

@Queenian: Those twins that are suppose to be going to Queens next year is that still on or they off to Grey Bloem. I think they would be under 15 next year so if it happens the Queens under14’s this year are quite good so with two monster locks like that would make them a mean machine team next year.

@Playa: Hey watch a lot of the Dale vs Selborne games in EL a few weeks ago and from what I saw the Tick Bird is going to battle the next 5 years was not one age group that looked average or better not even the 2nd’s and 3rd,s looked quite poor.

Must say the under 13A team is super hot but the talk around the field was 4 of those boys will not be going to Dale senior which is a pity.

In teen deel ek is dood seker daarvan.

@Tierkopkraal: I hope so too, hey. It is really unfortunate. It was a derby we loved to hate cause those manne were as rough as Dalians.

DP replaced Grey Bloem on our fixture list in 1994.1994 (20-0),1995 (20-15) & 1996 (22-10) were sure wins. Then something changed in ’97 with the draw (15-15).The ’98 team was the first to lose to DP (13-21), then another close win for us in ’99 (27-22).Then the shock of our lives in 2000.But that side was good.We had what was believed to be the quickest backline in the EC that year, but those DP boys proved that belief wrong.DP right winger (short red head – forgot his name) ran around our left wing Vuyo Sishuba who was the quickest under 18 in the Border at the time. They had us in sixes and sevens for the whole 70 minutes. It was close until the last 3 minutes when DP scored 2 successive tries to win the game. Final score 17-27.We were the second team to lose to DP.

it is sad to hear about that.but thanks for clearing that up for me. hope one day all the politics can be put aside and the derby continued. i heard stories of that 2000 DP team only lost to Oakdale that year. the 2001, 1st XV followed up from the team of 2000 only losing to Grey(Luke Watson’s side) 7-17 and to Outeniqua 10-20. Beating Boland Landbou on the farm 17-3,PW Botha(Zane Kirchner) 33-17, Waterkloof 16-9, Dale 34-3, Framesby 40-7, st Andrews 20-19,Marlow on the farm 21-15 and drew with HTS Middelburg 13 all.

@Tierkopkraal: Eish! Politics mate. The banter from the sidelines got a bit too heated and the derby had to be stopped. To be frank, it got too racial.I think the last fixture was in 2007.DP-Dale games were always heated and physical.

DP was always a tough one for us,especially in Uitenhage.I played from 1996-2000.I never won in Uitenhage. The only home game I lost against DP was in my matric year  but to a very good DP side.I remember when I was U/15 in ’97, playing at DP for the first time, all teams lost (20 fixtures on the day), except our 1st XV…they drew.

if it makes you feel any better, I know a lot of mates who have never won against DP, some would trade all their wins against QC and Selborne just for one win against DP.

@Playa: Do you know why the Dale and Daniel Pienaar fixture is canceled. Dale was our bogey team from U/14 up until our 1stXV game (2001-2005 my year group)
never beat them but always a close game think the biggest score was when we lost as the 1st XV in 2005 on our field 21-27. Remember Bjorn Basson playing for Dale. with Dewald Potgieter our captain.

@Queenian: All DP junior teams won and up until the 3rd team.
14/A won 14-10, 15/A won 48-6, 16/B won 17-0 , 16/A won 41-3 and 3rd team won 20-5 thats the only scores that i have. Much closer than what i thinking was going to happen. But DP could have won it at the end, Last minute penalty kick going wide.

None of these have interfered with work though, just don’t miss a Saturday’s rugby and the Festivals were during the schools holidays. Even when the girls were singing in Bloem last weekend, I managed to sneak the Sentraal/Duineveld derby while there

@Playa: My bad! In hindsight, with a 50% win ratio season to date, any win is memorable! Jokes aside, I really enjoyed seeing Dale, Muir, Queens and Selborne in action at CSW, having had the opportunity to watch Otto Du Plessis and Despatch from the EC play at the Tony Stoops RF earlier the season.

I worked out the other day that I have watched over 60 live SBR games season to date, involving 33 different schools and attended 3 SBR festivals in the process. That, and not only the success of the teams that I support, has made it yet another enjoyable SBR season for me.

@Djou: @McCulleys Workshop: @beet: Nah boys, we take the good with the bad. 2013 has been a rough one for the Farmers, last count close on 50 boys have donned the Black Jersey, and that out of an available pool of 140 gr. 11’s and 12’s (that’s 36%!). Despite the lows, this group has showed immense guts throughout the season and still managed to bank some memorable wins against PRG, Wynberg, Noord-Kaap, Nico Malan and Selborne as well.

Maybe a timely wake-up call for all involved to invest in a bit more depth for future years, but looking at the age group performances this year (the u14/15/16A’s and Seccies did win yesterday), they will be more competitive over the next 2 years.

@Tjoppa: Hoe lank tyd het dok nog by Affies oor?

HTS Daniel Pienaar lost the FNB Classic against Die Brandwag 15-17. Winning kick going wide for DP. Some bad calls from ref both ways. But a good game at the end.As a DP old boy i didn’t have much hope, but the game was there for the taking. DP out scoring Die Brandwag two tries to one.
Some other scores DP 14/A winning 14-10, DP 15/A winning 48-6, DP 3rd winning 20-5 and DP seconds Lost 7-10. Next and final game vs Outeniqua in George.

Miskien is volgende jaar beter.

Good win for Marlow over HTS Daniel Pienaar, left a lot of Old boys dissapointed who traveled far for reunion weekend. DP was half time still 9-6 in the lead but shortly after the break the dam wall broke. DP junior teams
doing well 14/A beat Marlow 52-5, 15/a beat Marlow 50-3 and 16/A beat Marlow 21-12 game was stopped short shortly after DP prop was send of for a dangerous tackle and the Marlow coach chirping the ref. But it is still the 1XV game that matters. Not one of the greatest of seasons for Daniel Pienaar. As they need to pull their socks up to beat Die Brandwag this Wednesday at Brandwag in the FNB Classic.

@Deon: I have to remember most of the side (I did cheat and look it up, would have forgotten Christie Noble and Gerhard Harding). 3 College boys in there with Jamieson, Stransky and Thompson, plus an Ixopo boy in “Plank” Atherton (my missus is an Ixopo girl). My son was best mates with Andrew Aitkens’s (DHS) nephew so got reminded about that plenty for 7 years at Prep. Then my association with Northwood makes Reece an obvious one to remember.

Short week – snow coming on the Berg, big warnings for Thursday, déjà vu, Grey Bloem couldn’t get to Glenwood last year because of snow. I will be taking a weekend up near Ixopo, will quaff a few warming whiskies in honour of the 1990 side (any excuse will do)

@RedBlack White.

Having just recovered from what can only be described as a failed attempt at self-medication after yesterdays first team game I see controversy wasn’t just limited to the fields of Bassons and Madsons. Hopefully the College Head does something about the lack of subtlety from the boys from Umbilo. The First team game was a cracker but a absolute brain fart of mammoth proportions by the College skipper changed the complexion of the game in bad way for College. Also I see the u15b game is listed as a Glenwood win, in actual fact the game was won by College with the ref having no clue what the score was (he wasn’t alone with many culprits showcasing their talents or lack thereof in the reffing department) and the Glenwood coaches also trying to knick the win after the fact.

@Rugbyman: Dit maak mens siek!

@ maroon8 – sorry to hear u feel that way.the u16 PRG team was no where near their best yday & that can also be partially attributed to a very strong Oakdale team who played really well like I mentioned earlier in this thread, yet they still managed to win the game which in itself shows alot of guts n determination in my books because its near impossible for a top team to have “stellar” games week in n week out for 2yrs etc

@Redblack White: I want to declare with years of evolution I detected a major difference in the behaviour of Souties from Durban and Inland Souties. Therefore I think with the Inland Souties remaining the closest to the real thing they will be still Souties from hereon.
Those left behind in Durban and surrounding areas will from now on be known as a distant sub species referred to as Zumbies. The first part referring to their leader and the latter “ies” just for sounding good.
The reason for honouring their leader, in naming the sub species, lies in that his major characteristics is shared in a big way by the whole sub species. They are always innocent, the victim of circumstances and blame the Boere for anything gone wrong. Their behaviour in defeat is also suspect.
If we take three recent Rugby events as a case study. Affies vs Glenwood, Affies vs MC and Affies vs PBHS. Affies who is the common enemy being Boer/Afrikaans gave each of these teams a deserved hiding. By deserved I do not imply because of the history a defeat was deserved but only suggest that Affies was the best team on all three occations and deserved to win. The reactions of the three parties let to me identifying the new sub species.
Long live the Souties, and may the Zumbies stay where they are.

Eintlik hoop ek , ek is verkeerd.

So by the way……op gister se spel.was Oakdale se 0/16a span vir my veel beter en het die ref hulle bedonner in die doodsnikke.Wat PRG rugby betref……..groot skroef los. Maar by Boishaai ook. By Gim gaan dit goed.Hoekom?

I understand that but what if the under16 kid in the 1st team wanted to play with his age group mates too? Not saying it would happen. Greg Nicol was playing 1st team in like standard 7 he was good and fit enough to play both. There is certainly no age issue there. Are there written rules on this?

@Grasshopper: And no injury crisis – they did the same thing at College on Reunion Day, and have made similar applications in the past, we have only just picked it up. Get the other schools to check team sheets, it will have been a season long thing.

@Grasshopper: The issue is not having U16’s in the 1st’s, it is having 1st team players in U16. The school needs to make up their minds. The behind the scenes manipulation, requesting different time slots so as to give their players maximum time to rest, is nonsense.

The nature of hockey nowadays is the same as water polo – you can make subsitutions on the run, so players can literally be on for 5 minute slots if you wish. It is completely different to rugby, where a subsitution is permanent. It is not hard to keep players fit enough for that. Under these circumstances you could request that your 2nd side is at 8:00am, then the 1st is at 2pm and play the same sides, completely dominate the 2nd division and also the first, with a really good side which would be cheap to assemble as you get 2 for the price of one.

As I said, College have 4 U16 reps in the 1sts, one of them has made the SA U16 side, 3 others the KZN Midlands side. They are 1st team players, and that is that. I am sure the same exists at Kearsney – I know of at least one U16 that plays 1sts there.

@Gungets Tuft: I thought it strange from you but reading it again I apologize. However, if rules have been bent they need to be sorted. In terms of hockey, admit Glenwood are in the top 4 in KZN, especially having beaten Westville in the night league. Also the game at College was close…..the coach obviously wanted our recent SA schools under 16’s playing both games, surely it’s a disadvantage having a tied player rather than a fresh one. I can’t see how this can be a issue, you have 2nd team reserved for 1st team rugby play partial 1st team games. They might have had a serious late injury crisis….2 sides to every story….

URGENT: In response to comments made by Gundgets Tuft; and many others from many other bloggers and school interest parties; that in the interest of enforces a code of good practice; an Ombudsman for School Sports (OSS) which has a mandate to adjudicate on matters applied to them in writing by anyone or school, which directly relate to matters of school schools and the negative impact it may have as a consequence.

The composition should be neutral in its composition with a representative with legal or CCMA type experience and a council which is comprised of voted in members whom may not officiate on any matters which involved their school.

Adjudication simply seeks to make recommendations which can be applied across the board and stops things like, unfair practice, cheating, brings the school/a into disrepute etc.

The process should follow something like:
Applications must be submitted in writing using the official forms as provided online at http://www.oss.co.za (fictitious).
The applications are assessed and prioritized.
Committee assesses each application and votes online internally whether to formally investigate or to respond to the applicant or make a statement.
Applications warranting investigation are responded to in writing to parties concerned, I.e.: schools, clubs.
Parties and then allowed internal fact finding and gathering etc.
Parties submit responses which committee oversees.
    Mediation may be next step.
Solution, recommendations, details of findings sent to participants and made available to public online.

The cost is a smallish monthly levy from dept education or schools. Membership is nominations online or something similar.

    Outcome
I just thing claims such as GT has made then become official once the schools are made aware and agree to have its application officially introduced to the OSS.

    Thoughts???

@Grasshopper: Please bru – read my message from yesterday and see if there is a hint of an “excuse”, then examine my track record for excuses. For College to win only 4 out of 26 matches is not something a drug-free commentator is going to start defending. Glenwood rugby is in a fine state, you have never heard me even hint at anything else.

Sitting in the South stand behind the posts yesterday was a fine experience. I do not normally enjoy my outings to Glenwood, always sat in the main stand, but yesterday was a nice day. Knowledgable and generous supporters, it was good stuff.

On the hockey – I suggest all competitor schools take note, requests for time and venue changes from Glenwood should be viewed with suspicion. Be interesting to hear from NW Knight and other schools whether that same requests were made of them this year.

I sense that any complaints about bending of the rules is always met with the “sour grapes” defense, so as long as you win you get to decide right and wrong.

@Grasshopper: On the subject of hockey ….

For the College home fixtures College was surprised when Glenwood asked if the U16 match could be played as the first match of the morning, something about making sure that the U16A hockey did not clash with U16 rugby. Yesterday Glenwood made the U16 match at 8:30am, instead of – as is customary, just before the 1st team match. We soon found out why.

Glenwood had 4 x U16 players start for both the U16A and the 1st side, as well as 2 x U16A players start for the 2nds. They also had 4 x 1st team players start for the Glenwood 2nd side (they didn’t even take off their 1st team socks). Now look at the hockey results and see if there is any correlation.

To make sure that this was not too evident, they did not announce the full squad of 14 for the 1st hockey, just a list of 11 names.

College also have 4 x U16’s playing in their 1st side but, as is generally agreed, a higher team player is not allowed to start for a “lower” team, so they play JUST for the 1st side.

It’s wrong, plain and simple. I can only assume that Glenwood regard this as a way to “sweat” expensive assets.

And a final note – allowing your umpires to wear replica “national umpire” kit (with the Glenwood badge on it) is also misleading, unless they are all nationally qualifed umpires, which at U16B and C level would be a real surprise.

    @phat55:
PRG se 0/19 rugby is ‘n “disgrace”.

I see on Twitter all the Affies supporters claiming No1 etc, unbeaten season etc, but the did not play the one team that could have beaten them, especially at full strength, Paarl Gim. For me there can be no no1 if they don’t play each other. Affies also did not play Garsies, so for me it should be a tie at 1. Affies have proved they are far better than us Soutie schools, putting on 40 plus points on College, PBHS, KES and Glenwood, although I think Glenwood had the closest margin…..;-) Well done to the Green Machine today, made an average season a little better :-)

PRG u16 vs Oakdale was a real tough one! Oakdale kids really impressed & showed why they have only lost one game this season.
PRG boys never really got going but I guess their winning culture pulled them through at the end, taking it 18-12
    any other u16 scores????

Ek het my bloedruk pille nou al vir 2 dae lank verdubbel so my senuwees is al lank al kas toe . Sterkte vir julle

I see the Paarl interschools got its own story. Hope the Gimmies does the trick and kick @ss!

However, the Affies vs Pretoria Boys High match has its own appeal – Boere vs Engelse!
Boys High always tough when playing Affies. Boys High does have a decent team this year, but Affies still the side in SA who won all their matches.

After just over 15 000 votes have been cast it is The Victoria Recreation Ground at Queen’s College that was voted the Best Sports Field in our recent poll by visitors to the website.

It is a field that has been dubbed “The House of Pain” ,holds more than 90 years of memories and has produced seven international players including five Springboks.

Although Queen’s College has a total of seven rugby fields which comfortably are able to accommodate the teams they have, it is the Rec which is the host of the main rugby games of the afternoon.

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams are the Queen’s College teams that play on their showcase field in front of a The Rec grandstand which can accommodate up to 6000 spectators and small brick stands 800 spectators

2013 Beeld trophy 1/4 finals will see some of the biggest line up of matches in the Noordvaal this year and maybe the history of this competition. 6 out of the 8 schools have been in the top 20, even top 10 this year.( EG Jansen, Nelspruit, Monument, HTS Middelburg, Garsfontein, Waterkloof) One close to top 20(Kempton park) Also Affies vs Pretoria boys high will be very big..Does anyone know what time this match is played??

College vs Glenwood should as always be a passionate affair. Both teams will look back at a less than satisfactory year for them and this should spur them on to giving it their utmost.

Some close results last time round which those teams will want to turn around – I remember the 16a game being a nailbiter to the last second when young Matt Kriel missed the penalty that would have swung the result College way. My favorite moment though – ex-College boy Staples consoling Kriel after the final whistle and gesturing to the College boys to keep their chins up – this is what SBR is all about!!

    Gonna be another great weekend!!!
