Tough to call them ‘KZN champions’ when they only have a winning record against 4 of the other KZN teams. Such a pity the DHS fixture couldn’t be re-arranged.

That is not necessarily a correlation that holds true for SA Schools. Hilton may have had a team of 15 (to 23) really, really good players, and their coaching structures could be better, and their game schedule was kinder to their season, etc. – which made them the “number one”. And, their best players may have been playing in positions that were hotly contested from national competition.
In contrast – Michaelhouse, for example, had 3 exceptional players in positions (or with the versatility) that the national selectors were looking for and in positions that may not have had the same level of alternative selection options.
SA Schools selection doesn’t look to reward a school that may have had a season where they may have sneaked out on top of a provincial log – it looks for exceptional talent across the board.
