EG’s Pieter Jansen placed on standby for SA Schools

Valke Craven Week hooker Pieter Jansen, who also captains Dr EG Jansen, has been placed on standby for the SA Schools squad ahead of their under-18 international quadrangular series against England, France and Wales. Jansen’s standby is as a result of unfortunate HJS Paarl Boys High and Western Province hooker Daniel du Plessis, who has not regained full fitness after picking up an injury during the Craven Week final against the Golden Lions.

Pieter Jansen has been on the radar for much of the 2013 school rugby season entirely due to the high standards he delivers as part a very competent EG 1st XV. With a reasonably accurate throw-in and a good on-field work ethic, he could not have missed out on the initial SA Schools selection by much. This year has been a good one to EG. It has shown in their results. The school from Boksburg has been boosted by the high number of good quality players in the team, including SA Schools 2012 trialist Johan Labuschagne, who’s season was also cut short by a knee injury.  Perhaps what’s been more of a surprise up until now is that even though the Jansies had several contenders for SA Schools honours,  Pieter is the first and probably only player from the class of 2013 to gain national colours for rugby.

The Italian under-18 team are also out in South Africa on tour. However they will not be playing any under-18 internationals.

Transvalia and Valke scrumhalf Marco Janse van Vuuren has  been called up to replace injured Remu Malan of Outeniqua and SWD.

The under-18 international  series fixtures for 2013 are as follows:

The boys will miss more than 14 academic days (including training) so close to the matric exams.
Eish Saru, I gather you either don’t care about the boys’ academic careers, or maybe just bad planning?
Can’t you schedule this differently? Change the Craven week to early in July holidays and play the “tests” during the end of the holiday season. Also close to the northern hemisphere’s school holiday season.

Well done EG Jansen and to Pieter Jansen. I wonder how will this effect the Beeld trophy game on the 17th between EG Jansen and Nelspruit? Both teams have 1 SA schools player and sure they do not want to tackle this game without their top players..
