DSRU Invitation Team plays Montpellier

montpellier rugbyThe 2nd weekend of Colts fixtures will take place at Varsity College this Sunday and will feature a match between a DRSU invitational team and the touring French team from Montpellier.   The match will take place at 16:30 on the Varsity College main field.   The tourists reportedly do not speak or understand a word of English so trying to find a suitable referee is proving a challenge.   Joubert is a reasonably French sounding name?   ;)The provisional set of fixtures for Sunday is:

@Buffel: Yup. What we have to try and do as a collective is to keep the leagues competitive and exciting. This means avoiding a situation where we have strong and weak clubs. Ideally, the talent pool needs to be evenly spread out so that every match becomes a contest.

What seems to be happening is that the strong clubs are getting stronger and the weak clubs are getting weaker or even dropping out altogether. There are reasons for this – some that we as administrators and coaches of the various clubs can control and some that we cannot. Left to continue, we will end up with 2 or 3 very strong clubs and not much else. That would be sad. It all starts with participation from the parent community to build up the clubs and to get involved as organisers / coaches / medics / referees etc. Then it becomes about looking at the big picture and not only the strength of one’s own club.

@Rugger fan: A few of our stars saved us – one particular forward playing in the back-line comes to mind 8) It was a scrappy game with a lot of work needed but we will take the win anyway.

What is also nice to see is the lesser known boys from some of the Tier 2 schools that really are starting to shine. That is what makes Colts coaching so rewarding.

@Rugger fan: thats the beauty of club rugby. boys from different backgrounds coming together to enjoy the game. a-b-c- team players. It doesn’t matter.

@star – interestingly – in the U14 (U15B teams) – the Collegians team were downed on Sunday in Toti by the Hillcrest team in a scrappy game.

Collegians had a good few Westville A team players (and 1 Kearsney A teamer at lock). Hillcrest had no real “stars” but managed to pull off the victory. There were a few B and C team players from Westville in the Hillcrest mix too.

@Pedantic: will join you for a couple. It’s great that the boys can still play well into september and october if selected for the IPT. That means that they have a break at xmas then its back to pre season. This will give them an insight into what a professional player goes through.

@star: Get there for the 11:30 Under 16 game and you will get to see a fair number of Westville players – you may be surprised how they perform when allowed to express themselves.

My official duty ends after that game which means the Cream Sodas can start early :)

@Rugger fan: The collegians/varsity college game has been postponed as the majority come from those 2 sides. It will be played at a later date.

How is it going to affect the clubs involved? As their star players will be missing the league fixture just prior to the Invitational?

@star: Hahaha. Westville hecklers don’t bother me – quite used to them by now.

You have me at a disadvantage – you know me but I don’t know you so come and introduce yourself sometime. I thought you might do that after the Westville / College match – I thought I saw your lightie’s name on my team sheet. He played quite well that day as I recall.

Just leave your mate WBHS Griffon at home. Wouldn’t like him to be waiting outside the pub for us cos of the age thing while we catch up over a Cream Soda or two now do we?

@star: One of the things I really enjoy about club rugby is to see the boys from different schools play together as amazing teams. There is no animosity, bad blood, hard feelings etc that is often written about in these blogs.

@ Beet- it would have been quite nice if you had added the schools the boys attend.
I also see Greenblooded is doing a bit of reffing from start to finish. Going to be a long day. I think I might go down and do a bit of heckling from the sidelines  I want to see if he will invoke his powers and despatch me from the field. Or maybe he won’t as McCulley says I have all the refs on my payroll.

@beet: I believe that Montpelier are a very talented bunch . 4 current age group internationals and the balance provincial so they should be a stern test for our boys. This DRSU side is an indication of what is to come this year at the IPT to be held in Pretoria and hopefully we bring back the coverted U18 title as champions.

Wow this looks promising. A nice strong looking DSRU Invitational team against a French Top 14 club’s youth team. It could be a cracker. Plenty of incentive to get to the game. :-D
