The Varsity Cup Young Guns Compo for under-20 students is into Round 3. Its the first time this season that all 8 teams will be in action. 02-Mar-13. Glenwood and Framesby treated early arriving fans at the Kings Park Stadium in Durban to the only real excitement at the venue on the day. With the main game, a Super Rugby match between the Sharks and the Stormers turning out to be a dull affair, the 50-points aggregate score in the schoolboy rugby curtain raiser proved to be an advert of how rugby is meant to be played from a tactical point of view. In the end Glenwood won 26-24 after leading 12-9 at the break.…
Maritzburg College are still seeing the positive side of life despite going down to Westville (10-5) and then to Kearsney (19-7) in their first two warm up sessions of the year, played at the Voortrekker Rugby Night . Coach Ryan Strudwick has believes there has been good value in giving players game time with contact and in testing depth.…
Framesby is looking forward to the experience of playing a curtain-raiser to the Sharks versus Stormers Super Rugby match at Kings Park in Durban on Saturday, 02 March 2013. They are also grateful for the good relationship they have with their opponents on the day Glenwood, which made this match possible. Just like Glenwood, Framesby will be approaching the game as a pre-season preparation for the coming season.…
The King Edward VII Easter Rugby Festival is arguable the best attended school rugby festival in the country.
This year apart from the hosts KES, the big attraction team is bound to be Garsfontein who has seen a big improvement in their rugby and results in recent times. Centurion also comes off a very good 2012 season and will be hoping to build on that success. Marlow, Menlopark and Eldoraigne rank nationally amongst the unknown quanities and are capable of producing good results while Hentie Cilliers has been a good supply line to the Griffons Craven Week and Academy Week causes over the years.

Glenwood opens their season in style with a curtain-raiser to the Sharks versus Stormers Super Rugby match at Kings Park on Saturday 02 March 2013. Kickoff is at 5pm. Their worthy opponents will be Framesby from Port Elizabeth, who like Glenwood are involved in three major rugby festivals this season, namely NWU-Puk, Kearsney and Wildeklawer. It’s a big season for both and although this game is billed as a proper fixture, Glenwood has indicated that they will be approaching it as a pre-season game with combinations still under the microscope.…

Grey College has selected its 1st XV consisting of 23-player squad for the opening game against Voortrekker in Bethlehem on 02 March 2013. The talented team contains a number of players that did duty in 2012. All-in-all 17 Grade-12 students and 6 Grade-11’s make for a very well balanced squad however only one of the Grade-11’s namely flyhalf Michael Andrade will start the game.…

The first round of the Varsity Cup Young Guns for under-20’s saw the defending champions Tuks squeeze by the Shimlas 18-16 while the UCT Trojans thrashed NMMU 44-15. This week NMMU are going to need all the home support they can get for a very tough encounter against the Maties while the Pukke should be too strong for Wits at the Fanie du Toit Stadium in Potchefstroom.…
Sergeal Petersen, the 18-year-old Southern Kings right wing has just completed a dream debut for the new Super Rugby franchise. On Saturday the Kings defeated the Western Force 22-10 with Petersen accounting for two tries and being awarded the Man of the Match after the game. Professional Super Rugby started out as the Super 12 in 1996 and is now into it’s eighteenth season. During this time not too many 18-year-olds have played in the competition, even fewer of that age have scored tries and of those try-scorers it has been a rarity for one to score on debut. So you can imagine how unique Petersen’s achievements are.…
Northwood deservedly beat Port Natal 12-3 to claim the Damelin Night Series title for 2013. The win was made possible thanks to some outstanding work by the pack and excellent defence all round.…
Updated. Super Rugby kicks off in South Africa and New Zealand today. College Old Boy Slam will be hard pressed to hold onto his rather fortuitous lead once the real contenders get going this weekend in a compo that is all about skills and has zero to do with luck in spite of what everyone else and your own human logic tells you.…
Port Natal has one final hurdle to clear in order to complete a dream Damelin Night Series. After a less than convincing start against Pinetown, the hosts got their act together with a resounding victory…
Kearsney will head into their first major contact session of 2013 without a number of their stalwarts. Just like Tier 1 opponents College and Westville, the overlap of the rugby pre-season with the summer sports calendar has resulted in a number of first choice players not being made available for these warm-up games. This along with injuries sees Kearsney travel to the Voortrekker Rugby Night Series in Pietermaritzburg for a match against locals College without the likes of their SA Schools duo of Dan and JL du Preez, highly rated Ayron Schramm, playmaker Tyler Smith, the ever-reliable decision-maker Tristan Tedder and strongly-built Guy Francis.…
Tony Jordan recently retired after 39 years of teaching service, over 25 of which was spent at Northwood. His replacement as headmaster at Northwood is a big rugby fan which bodes well for the school and school rugby in KwaZulu-Natal in general. Here is the newsletter confirming the new appointment.…
Blue Bulls scout Xander Janse van Rensburg, who is known to travel the length and breadth of South Africa during the school rugby season in search of talent to sign up for the Loftus based team and the University of Pretoria, is in the Western Cape at the moment. Since the local school season is still weeks away from kicking off, his much earlier than anticipated trip down south has a number of loyal Province officials feeling a bit uncomfortable. …
Northwood don’t anticipate any issues with the controversial Headmasters Agreement to crop up at any stage this season. The school acquired the services of three new under-19 1st XV players for 2013. …

Not too much enthusiasm is expected to come Kings Super Rugby campaign this season but they do have one of the brightest most exciting young prospects on their books and they intend to use him. Grey High and SA Schools 2012 wing Sergeal Petersen has been selected to start for the Kings in their first ever Super Rugby match against the Western Force on Saturday 23 February. The youngster Super Rugby player of all times was the Force’s former star James o’Connor at 17 years 288 days so that record is not under threat but at 18 years and 206 days, Peterson is still pretty much a baby in a competition in which the average age of the local Saffa squad players is still close to 26.…
The Sharks have put out a newsletter to confirm that it is all systems go for their inaugural KZN Top Schools Rugby Festival. The date for the event is 06 March. The venue is Kings Park. The 10 participating schools are Clifton, DHS, George Campbell, Glenwood, Kearsney, Maritzburg College, Northwood, Pionier, Port Natal and Westville. The promise made by the KZNRU: “this festival is going to become a successful and enjoyable addition to KZN’s sporting calendar”. The interpretation is that it is here to stay.…
Now that the Kings are established as a new Super Rugby franchise it brings about new opportunities. One such initiative undertaken is to build better ties with the schools within its system in the hopes of developing a feeder system and thereby fulfilling the promise of developing players from the region into fully fledged home grown professional rugby players one day. As a result Grey High School of Port Elizabeth and Kingswood from Grahamstown are being lined up as a possible curtain raiser to the Kings versus Chiefs match on Saturday 15 March at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.…
The Varsity Cup under-20 competition known as the Young Guns kicks off this afternoon. Tuks beat Maties in an exciting final last year. On paper both teams are again looking like the two strongest teams in the competition this year. Maties will not be in action today but the Tuks have a relatively difficult assignment at the University of the Free State. Both teams are fielding a number of players that did provincial duty in the 2012 ABSA under-19 competition. In the only other first round game the Trojans from UCT hosts NMMU.…

Westville got their 2013 rugby campaign off to a winning start with victories at the Voortrekker Rugby Night Series in Pietermaritzburg on Friday evening. In poor weather their 1St XV defeated Maritzburg College 10-5 followed by their 2nd XV recording a 21-7 win against the Voortrekker 1st XV.…
Maritzburg College has a pre-season game against Westville scheduled for this evening at 18h30 as part of the Voortrekker Rugby Night Series. Just like last year a number of players are not available mainly because of summer sports commitment. There are however still good indications of first choices in various positions provided by some of the team selections made for this evening’s game.…
It’s still early days and Westville like all other schools competing at this time of the year are using game time as part of their preparations for the regular season. One imagines that there is a fair amount of tweaking to be done and a few players are still unavailable due to other commitments. Nevertheless their 1st XV and 2nd XV selections for tonight’s Voortrekker Night Series makes for interesting reading. The games on are Westville 1st XV vs Maritzburg College at 18h30 and Westville 2nd XV vs Voortrekker 19h30. …
Voortrekker has organised a night series tournament along similar lines to the one they arranged last year.
