@Gungets Tuft: exactly why Glenwood must do something to arrange a fixture with either PBHS or KES even if they have to go up to JHB every year……the poor D,E,F and G sides never get a game, will soon stop rugby or should do an internal competition

@GreenBlooded: No staggers means big scores lower down. Westville 4ths put 29 points on the board against DHS 3rds and that was only a 40 minute game. They only played 25 mins in the first half and 15 in the second.
The only points DHS scored in the Opens was the 3 their 1sts got. At U16 level their C team did not pitch – at home.

It might be a traditional derby but other than the three A team games I don’t think there will be much worth watching. No disrespect to DHS as we need them back stronger and with, at the very least, 20 teams.

@Grasshopper: No – I think that would probably be Skumbuzo Nzimande – the KZN flyhalf for U13 last year. He was playing 10 when I watched them. No sure where John Allen’s lighty plays. Didn’t see John at Skonk so maybe his lighty is in the B’s? Not sure.

    @GreenBlooded:
Yeah that’s probably true. But we’ll see, the DHS loose trio is a good one. But the 8th man is probably overused. I’m not worried though, they’ve played against bigger opposition and triumphed quite easily in the end.

Doubt that the backline won’t get the ball. What Glenwood will have to do is make sure that the flyhalf doesn’t touch the ball or DHS will run amok.

U15A game?? Think DHS will go good if their injured players are back!!

@HORSEFLY NO.1: Just had a look at the fixture list for Saturday:

    4 Open teams (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th – no staggers)
Only TWO!!!! U16 Teams – where are all your U16’s????
    4 Under 15 Teams (A, B, C, D – no staggers)
    3 Under 14 Teams (A, B, C – no staggers)

Very sad state of affairs. Hope the new management has a plan in place to turn this around.

@TheGoose: Our 2nds played Richards Bay and I know it was close but I must be honest and say I don’t recall any individual players (Pretorius) standing out. I do recall it was a close game and I remember thinking they would have put up a better performance than Empangeni did against the 1sts. Sorry I can’t comment.

@HORSEFLY NO.1: I saw your U14A take College to the cleaners in the mid-week game. I saw Glenwood draw against Kempton Park at Skonk. Very interesting tussle. Like I said – Glenwood have the better forwards (by far) and DHS have a better attacking backline.

@HORSEFLY NO.1: at 2,08 and 100kg he is a bean pole. He would need to be 110kg plus to have a presence in the rucks and mauls…otherwise they just break his legs. I remember a 2.11 volleyball player at Glenwood try rugby and was broken. He was the tallest in the school by far but did end up playing professionally in Hungary I believe…

@Grasshopper: He is a really nice guy. He was mainly a hooker now a 2nd team prop. His best form for me was against Affies in 2012. Showed he could throw a ball into a tight space between 2 opposite jumpers that were 2.04m and 2.00m. He also broke the gainline with several carries. Played well against powerhouse team that ended very close to no.1 in 2012. Has all the potential in the world. I think if his heart was really in rugby he would be the obvious KZN 1st choice at hooker now. Has the talent and the size.

Interesting to hear that Hilton old boy Sebastian Negri is going to the u20 JWC with Italia! If someone reads this and sees Biagio, please tell him. 12 months of conditioning and there’ll be an international blue jersey guaranteed to come his way provided he wants it.

@HORSEFLY NO.1: U14A – yes that is true – but they need to get the ball first. Glenwood forwards will dominate big time. If the DHS backline get their hands on the ball they will run amok. That is a big “IF”. Of all the games on Saturday to watch – this is the one that will interest me the most.

    @greenblooded

    1st- Glenwood by 30
    2nd- Glenwood by 50

    16A- Glenwood by 11
    15A- DHS by 3
    14A- DHS by 12

16A will depend a lot on DHS to be honest. Glenwood will no doubt be amped and ready to play but DHS will be have to be determined…

15A, I think my boys have a big game in the tank waiting for the right time, this could be it

14A- Think the DHS backline will just be too hard to handle for Glenwood

    2nd: Glenwood by 50
    U16A: Glenwood by 25
    U15A: Glenwood by 10

Lower Teams – Glenwood by an average of 20 despite staggers.

I think he comes up short on the skill sides of things…as I said, I think his size has been the thing that’s mainly carried him through.

But if he can be more aggressive I think he could be a force to be reckoned with to be honest. DHS will definitely miss this kind of height next year…no tall locks in gr.11.

@HORSEFLY NO.1: That is interesting. Certainly if a 2.08m lock can come good for KZN he would make a world of difference.

In the College vs DHS game, there was a distinct lack of urgency to get after College ball and the DHS lineout was over-elaborated IMHO. They should have focused a lot more on what to do with good lineout ball than on a playbook to fool College’s avg height 1.84m lock combo. As a result they did not look very good. Granted it was DHS’s first game after over a month’s break and they were rusty.

I think some of the lessons learnt at last year’s Craven Week vs the Lions will play a part in selections and prepping this year:

1 – Make sure 2 Midlands schools know that have make players available on 16 June and for Bondedag – tick
2 – Make sure the team esp the Day 2 team gets adequate match practice
3 – Make sure good scrummagers are picked
4 – Make sure lineout accuracy is up to scratch – extra match practice and a useful 2.08m lock could definitely help here

Setpieces really let us down that day so that’s why I think the selectors are gonna look a lot harder at making the right choices here.

@Gungets Tuft: From all the rugby I’ve seen this season – Goodson has impressed me the most. Would befinately get the No 8 starting jersey in my team.

@Grasshopper: Khatide has been playing second fiddle to last year’s U16 hooker Mazwi at College for the last few games. I think a lot of those U16 stars from last year are making a big name for themselves. Goodson in particular. Another great player from last year’s U16A making a name for himself is Hayden Tharrat. I think the College 1st team in 2014 his going to kick butt in KZN.

@Grasshopper: At KERF it appeared that Rupert Kay was still captain but on that last day, I think the one you attended, he was on the bench until the second half. I have a feeling that was the day on which the captaincy unofficially changed hands. It became official a week later vs Pinetown.

@Grasshopper: Jason used to play for Glenwood u16A. He’s looks a bit on the light side right now and also not the tallest lock but he is athletic and likes to get stuck both on attack and on D. He has some good aggression and will be easy to lift in lineouts as well. I like how he puts his head down and takes on the responsibility of carrying the ball on the fringe for Hilton. This is were the defence is packed and ground is hard to gain.

Christopher Schoeman also very athletic. Very quick and good ball skills. Very good positive attitude on the field means he is always busy. Dangerous attacking player in open play and takes good lineout ball in the middle for MHS. Only concern is that House play him like a loose forward so he isn’t the kind of lock that does clearing out at rucks and a lot of the tight loose stuff, If Schramm and Mazibuko are there it might be overkill. Ideally the 2 aforementioned would be complimented by a much tighter player who isn’t necessarily as mobile but packs more weight and strength. Not to say that Schoeman can’t fulfil the role of a much tigher player.

@TheGoose: That’s excellent news. Jaco used to be at College before he suffered a personal tragedy and went back to RB. He was a highly rated player during his time at MC. Great to hear he is performing well. We need an assertive player in the line. Super to hear of a Country Districts player performing. Really difficult for those kids to make an impact at trials.

Horsie, Kay will be picked as he has been the captain at Glenwood and played Academy last year. I don’t think he is the best in his position but experience can’t be bought, also he can cover lock if needs be. Van der Heever you probably right but Mare is not the answer either. Mcgobo will make it too, he was brilliant at Kearsney, Wildeklawer and throughout the season, a bit small but there is no substitute for pace….

Also hearing that DHS no.4 lock Werner Kotze got A LOT of game time yesterday and is being looked at as a serious option because of his height(2.08m) . Don’t think he’s the right fit though.

@TheGoose: Once the final trials teams are out you will have an 80% idea of who are favs for the 2 teams. They will be in the main trial teams.

My guess at a Tier-1 team would be:

    1. Holenstein (MHS)
    2. Mzwai (MC) / Van Vuuren (G)
    3. Gumede (MC) / Another Tighthead who can play LH
    4. Gouws (HC) / Schoeman (MHS)
    5. D Du Preez (K)
    6. Mazibuko (G) / Maseko (H)
    7. J Du Preez (K)
    8. Schramm (K)
    9. McHardy (W) / Reece-Edwards (K)
    10. Tedder (K) / Webster (D)
    11. S Ngcobo (G)
    12. Nela (G) / Ellse (W)
    13. Blewett (H)
    14. Ngwenya (MC)
    15. Swart (G) – should be Vermaak

Worth remembering: Arnott (MHS), Khatide (MC), Joubert (G), Lines (K), Coetzee (MC), Wiessing (HC), Khanyile (GW) and Chidoma + a few other props.

Prop will be interesting. Ideally we need more versatility in the frontrow. A player that can play prop/hooker would be nice.

I also think Reece-Edward’s time at fullback and possibly McHardy’s time at flyhalf could stand either or both in good stead. Likewise Marcel Coetzee has played centre and wing. This could be very useful altho I really like Blewett.

@star: The Highway team played with power and fluency. Their lineouts were not very good. Their scrums were pretty even with Glenwood. The main differences were:
    1. Structure.
    2. Speed of execution.
    3. Breaking tackles.
    4. First time tackling.
    5. Turnovers won.
The Kearsney, Westville and Gelofte boys all played well.
College vs KES should be a good game. I might just squeeze it in before going to Voories.

@Grasshopper: I am almost certain that the quotas still exist. I noticed that at Grant Khomo last year that KZN complied diligently. The same cannot be said of certain other provinces.
Concerning 9 out of 23 being “easy” is a matter of opinion. Based on yesterday’s performances, I have to disagree.
The problem is exacerbated by the number of these players that need to be on the field at any time. It becomes tricky when you have a PD kid playing in a certain position, and he has to come off injured. Inevitably, you need to replace him with another PD player. It often requires reshuffling the backline etc.
This is the where the selections have to be carefully thought out – not an easy task !

On the quota point, this is not required anymore there are plenty of talented ‘previously disadvantaged’ kids who will make the side on merit. I can think of 4 in the Glenwood side alone…….9 out of 23 will be easy….

@ Amalekite- You mentioned that the Highways team was significantly better than the South Durban side. Where was the difference specifically? The tight 5 were a mixed bag of Kearsney/Westville and a Gelofte prop. What platform did they provide and how did the 2 Westville reps hold up.
@ Grassy- it is not just the 1st team performance that we were exited about. It is not often that KES at home only win 30% of their rugby matches( and only one A team game). There were some big turnarounds eg the U15B won 32 nil having lost the year before .KES also won only 15 % of the hockey matches and no A team games. We are justifiably proud of all our boys who performed so well away from home( and at altitude- your personal bugbear)

@Scrum Doctor: According to my sources, 11 need to be selected for the Academy and Grant Khomo sides, and 9 for the Craven Week side.
You are quite right in saying that this does make the selectors jobs a lot more difficult.

@Grasshopper: I must agree with you that I was a also disappointed with the victory margin. There were another 3 tries that should have been scored, but that’s how it goes in rugby. There is no comments column to say this or to say how weak KES were this year, according to you.
We will gladly accept this victory achieved in Jhb against opposition that we have not beaten for a long time. I see that the much vaunted Jeppe side only managed a 3 point win against KES last weekend.
As far as the great Glenwood victories over great schools like Monnas, Grey, Paarl Boys etc. over the last couple of years, an unreserved well done to you guys !

Just a little overly excited there, the KES team they beat was one of their weakest in a decade…….perspective is required in these sorts of articles…..

Does anyone know what the quota for previously disadvantage players is this year because in the past that has had a bigger impact on the team selection than the way the players play . We all have our theorys but the selectors have more constraints than they should do to complicate their task .

@Amalekite: I was disappointed with the small margin Westville beat KES  Again, spare a thought for the boys who were picked as they don’t pick themselves. The likes of Richter, Steyn Giles, Gerricke, Reynolds, Pyoos and Combrinck of the non Glenwood selectors are to blame for all the Glenwood trialists, not the boys or the school……just saying….

@Grasshopper: I did not mean any disrespect towards DHS. It’s just that with Glenwood’s entire 2nd team being deemed good enough to go to KZN trials versus only 6 DHS 1st team players, one assumes that your 2nds should be good enough to play their 1sts
I would say that those responsible for this decision are the ones showing disrespect to the 1st team players of DHS and all the other 1st tier schools who were not invited to the trials.
One must not forget that the boys consider being invited to KZN trials an honour. Spare a thought for all the excluded 1st team players that are considered to be below the 2nds of Glenwood.
Anyway, I trust that the Glenwood 1st team players will not hold back next time and that they will beat DHS by about 20 or more. Anything less will be a disappointment and don’t try and deny it

@Rugbyforlife: Only watched the first half, so did not see when he was moved. Was impressed by his running in the 1st half. Agree totally re Webster – he did not have any space yesterday, but still did well. He was in a class of his own at North Durban.

@Rugbyforlife: yes, the Glenwood team is complete rubbish, can’t imagine how bad the Hilton and Michaelhouse must be then, who they beat…1 point difference Kearsney must also be rubbish, so the only great players must come from Westville……all said in jest of course ;-)

    @NW_Knight:
Yes I agree that Tedder had a good game not sure if you watched the whole game where they put Tedder in the Glenwood team it was like he was not there. I think any #10 with good forwards would excel however if you had watched Websters first trial at George Campbell you would have seen skill.

@Amalekite: each to their own, it seems to have helped Glenwood this past decade and the boys are the only ones actually playing the game so are making their own decisions, nothing wrong with motivation or advise from the coaches who might have spotted something didn’t or couldn’t, a particular move the opposition does etc. To not do this is a disservice to the team and their chances. However I agree it is a little over the top having ear pieces etc, but that is just the current coaching groups style, the next one could be totally hands off. Toppy at Glenwood was hands off during the game but motivational at half time…

@Amalekite: there are a number of reasons why they probably under performed against Highway, it happened last year too. Anyway, as I said they should just pick the highway team for Craven Week and all the Glenwood criticism would stop. Funny how suddenly players who beat most of their local opposition suddenly become rubbish by losing a trial game with no build up or motivation like a derby. You disrespect DHS and our rivalry, for Glenwood beating DHS and beating them well is far more important than any other derby, to shut the flies up is team goal no1 each year! No matter how weak either side is they up their performance. Derbies like this are always bring out the best and most fire in the players. It’s like a war out there playing for your badge, school and honour. Over 90 years of rivalry!

@Grasshopper: As far as coaches telling the players what to do from the side of the field via the physio or personally, I think that they are doing the boys a disservice. The boys need to learn to become decision-makers. They need to learn by their mistakes. With video analysis and team talks, they learn very quickly.

@Grasshopper: Not the best players – why? Everyone else seems to send their best players to trials. Is Glenwood the exception? If so, for what reason?
Holding back for the game against DHS is laughable. Your 2nds should be able to beat them.
I was not trying to criticise. I was just shocked as I expected a well fought game. Glenwood only lost by 1 point to Kearsney and seem to have improved since then. They should have been the ones wanting to prove a point to the selectors and to Kearsney.
You seem to be saying that the trials are not really that important as the selectors have already made up their minds. I hope that this is not the case as it would devalue them in the eyes of all the other players.
Maybe they are keeping their best performance for the trials at Kings Park next week, seeing as they are going to go through anyway.

@Horsey: Standout players for me today:
U16 – Kearsney and MHS 10’s, Staples won the battle of the 8’s (although Dixon should also make it). Simmo at 9.

U18 – Although I;m not a fan, Tedder was sublime. Murran and Schramm at 8. Reece-edwards at 9. Both Doops will obviously make it.

The South Durban side was not Glenwood’s best players, you Westville ones love to have a dig hey. Glenwood are probably the 2nd strongest side in KZN this having lost by a point to Kearsney early season. They have played tons of rugby already, more than any side in province. They probably also holding back with the DHS derby this weekend. Maybe the Highway team wanted to prove a point, lots of if buts and maybe’s. The selectors will know already the core of their teams so the result is meaningless. Nice dig about the professional set-up :-) you should see the Kwaggas and Grey Bloem teams coaching set ups. To keep you lot quiet I hope they pick just Westville players…..finally we will get some peace!

Just got back from trials in Pmb.
The first few games provided no major fireworks and were fairly evenly matched.
Wow, the final game between Highway ( Kearsney and Westville ) and South Durban ( Glenwood ) was expected to be a close affair. Big mistake ! The Highway team crushed their counterparts from Glenwood. It was like watching a tier 1 school playing a tier 2 school.
I think that the Highway team must have scored about 5 or 6 unanswered tries in the first half.
The selectors then swopped the 9 – 13 of both sides. This seemed to help the Glenwood cause somewhat but they still failed to score and let in a try or two.
This game did not do any of the Glenwood players a favour. Not one of them stood out.
Someone mentioned that it might be that they were a bit lost without their full coaching staff running around with refreshments and headphones/microphones giving them instructions – who knows ?
There were also some of the better of the Glenwood players in the Selectors teams, playing earlier games. I did not quite understand this, as the best players should have been playing for South Durban.
Yeah, Glenwood having 32 players there was a bit of a mystery.
It is going to be interesting to see who goes through to the final round at Kings Park next week. I am also curious to see how the final trial games are going to be structured.
