BHP Top 50 – week ending 20 July 2013
There’s a new No.1. Affies’ dominate performance against Maritzburg College has given them a slight edge on Paarl Gim by just seven hundredth’s of a point. The log looks very settled near the top. In the teens, Wynberg and Grey PE have made big leaps following good campaigns at Cape Schools week. Rondebosch have gone through a bleak period and might be a bit fortunate to only fall seven spots. Their early season form has definitely come to their rescue. Maritzburg College and Kempton Park are other schools that have suffered major drops.…
Grogper Cup decider: will it be Gauteng or KZN?
You just gotta love schoolboy rugby! There are so many things to enjoy about the game being played on the field and when you can add unpredictability of the outcome to the mix, it just makes it that much more entertaining. At the start of this season and any season for that matter, in my mind at least, this Grogper Cup, a made-up tournament between several KZN and Gauteng English-medium schools should have been a foregone conclusion.…
Bulls respond to comment about Tuks

Marlow confirms their E/Cape No. 2 status
Marlow recorded a convincing 22-3 win at home against St Andrews to confirm that they are the province’s number 2 rugby school behind Grey High this year.…
ABSA u19: Bulls in a league of the own
It’s still early days still but the indications are that the Bulls are a notch above all their opponents in this years under-19 national championship. A convincing 9-try, 61 points drubbing of the Leopards in game 1 of the season didn’t say too much on it’s own at the time but when the Leopards went down to the Cape and beat the unsettled defending champions Province albeit with entirely new personal off course, sudden the Bulls victory took on new meaning. …
Lions juniors make the Sharks eat humble pie
The Golden Lions Rugby Union underlined their importance to the continued well-being of the South African rugby with two good road wins against the Sharks on Friday. In the under-19 game, a 67th minute try by EG Jansen Old Boy Kyle van Dalen sealed the deal as the Lions triumphed 21-13, denying the Sharks a bonus point in the process. In the under-21 game the visitors from Jozi had matters under control from the first half, building up a 17-0 lead at one stage and then holding out to win it 24-17 against a fairly competent Sharks team.…
HJS Paarl Boys High beats Paul Roos 21-20
Home team Paarl Boys High scrapped home 21-20 on Brug Street against Paul Roos thanks to a late try, scored with less than 3 minutes left on the clock. In so doing the Blue Army extended their winning streak against the Maroon Machine. The weather conditions were poor but the boys still managed to put on a great entertainment package with five tries thrown in. Also outstanding on the day was the singing by both sets of schoolboy supporters and the settling at Brug Street seemed to amplify their great school spirit.…

Western Province School Rugby A-team Logs
Paarl Boys High have an astonishing school A-team record in Western Province inter-schools at the moment. They have lost one A-team game in sixteen matches this season. This puts them top of the pile in the province that we need not remind everyone, has won the under-18, under-16 and under-13 national provincial titles in 2013. …
Appreciating the Glenwood rugby coach
I wanted to write this blog to add some counter balance to some of the comments that had been made about the Glenwood coach here and elsewhere over the years. This is by no means an attempt to change course on many of the issues that have impacted on KZN schools in recent times which I for one feel very strongly about but it is an effort to shed more light on the massive contribution that Sean Erasmus has made and continues to make as a rugby coach at various levels.…
KZN star backline player signed by the Cheetahs
Free State may have lost out to Western Province in their endeavours to retain the services of outstanding Grey College and SA Schools fullback EW Viljoen but they compensated for the lost in the best way possible by signing Glenwood and KZN Schools fullback Corné Vermaak. …
JD Schickerling ruled out of SA Schools internationals
JD Schickerling, the 2.03m, 107kg Paarl Gim lock has been sidelined for a further six weeks and will therefore not take part in the up and coming under-18 international series.…
Who is the Craven Week Player of the Year for 2013?
Later on in the year the Schoolboyrugby Blog will do it’s very best to find a successor to Handre Pollard as the School Rugby Player of the year but for now it’s worth trying to identify who SARU will name as the prestigious Craven Week Player of 2013, at their end of the domestic season prize giving event. …
Free State rugby on the rise
This season the Cheetahs senior team has rewritten the history books by qualifying for the Super Rugby play-offs for the first time since they became an independent franchise back in 2006. In addition to this they finished the regular season ahead of two major rivals namely the Sharks and the Stormers (WP in disguise). Now their junior Currie Cup teams are off to a good start. …
Is date of birth important in rugby?
Thank you very much to Tzavosky for this wonderful contribution that analyses the birth dates of the Craven Week players and the current Springboks:
It has been known for some time and supported by several studies in different sporting codes that an athlete’s date of birth can determine their success at an elite level in that code. Studies have been done for soccer, Australian league and Canadian Ice hockey that I’m aware of.…
KZN teams complete a triple against Border

WP winners of the 50th Craven Week
By Shawn Belluigi
13 July 2013 Western Province beat the Golden Lions 45-29 in the unofficial final of the 2013 Coca-Cola Craven Week in Polokwane on Saturday.
The win meant that Western Province became the only team at the week to win all three of their games, and they were rewarded with the inclusion of seven of their players in the SA Schools team that was announced at the end of the tournament.…
