🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣just rolled my jeep on my way to extra English lessons reading through this thread. Isn’t it lekker to have Hopper back. Making kuk with all the folk that are left behind in a failing society. Do not dare mention that the refugees have taken over the once mighty colony UK. Hopper still fits into his Green Machine Blazer and cover 100m is under 45s in his Chappie Speedo. 2 3 Hopper

It’s called family banter, grandad died in 2015 aged 90 and his son, my father-in-law was a KES OB too for 3 years before they moved to Durban and he attended Northlands (now Northwood). My dad attended DHS and uncle Glenwood, so plenty leg pulling going on in jest….

Put your big girl panties on, I was stirring the pot. I only watched 35 mins, Northwood were the better team & I couldn’t see KES coming back especially losing their flank to a horrific looking head clash, hope he’s ok. KES didn’t look to have any X factor to cut through, maybe grind a win at home. Northwood looked 10 to 15 points better, just my opinion

KES NORTHWOOD OFFICIAL RESULT “GAME ABANDONED

    “Well said Theo.
As the person who had to make the ultimate decision( as Principal of King Edward) let me give the facts as it happened.
The lightning alarm triggered at 15h57 – 7 minutes and 39 seconds into the second half.
The all clear from the system sounded at 16h 44.
Both Principals, head coaches and referees were part of the ultimate decision to abandon the game. Why was it abandoned? Player safety was the driving consideration. These are school boys and not professional athletes and they had been off the field for 48 odd minutes. The strength and conditioning experts advised that the boys would need to warm up again and for 15-20 minutes.
This would have pushed us past 5 pm and the guarantee of light was compromised. But most importantly we considered what was in the best interest of the boys? And after chatting at length the coaches felt that the player safety was compromised so the game was abandoned( that’s the official state of the game) hence there is no result. Not that any result was important. That must not take away from the fact that for 37 minutes of play both teams were uncompromising and gave it their best, representing their respective schools with a great deal of pride and honour.”

Comment taken from Theo Garrun’s blog by KES headmaster.

Yes, only the narrow loss to Westville to date, and seeing how well they did at KERF, it feels like a good result. DHS are probably another level still. NW finished second to them in KZn last year, but in fact played them twice in the season, drawing the first game and losing by only 7 points in the 2nd game. So who knows, maybe they can give them a decent battle again this year…although i fear they will be too strong, and did not have the travel to and from JHB that NW did this weekend by bus.

Agree not on here, and inaccurate to say anyone said they would have won. But still strong views that the tide had turned and a stirring comeback was about to commence, which based on the first 35 minutes of the game is also debatable. Seemed to just be real outrage that the result was posted as a win to Northwood by some sites (when in fact it seems that could very well have been a legitimate result according to the rules. But in any case, you seem to know the schools agreed to call it a non-result, which is fair play to Northwood. Hope the teams can meet agai in the future, always a good festival hosted by KES which NW rugby and hockey have attended for years.

Northwood has had an impressive season so far, with their only loss being a narrow 14-16 defeat to Westville. They face a tough run of fixtures ahead, starting with the highly rated and unbeaten Durban High School this Saturday. A week later, they will take on Paarl Gym and Drostdy at the prestigious Wildeklawer tournament, setting the stage for a real test of their form.

Thank you, yes they have picked up where the team left off last year. Very happy for them to be competing so well again. Was really chuffed to see KES get the win over Rondebosch as well. Correct, not sure why the change, and a few Old Boys not happy. It was always brown and white squares. Blue was for the colour, trim and socks. Dont know why the change this year.

Having read many comments here and online, I do find it slightly presumtious by many KES supporters suggesting that the tide had turned and basically suggesting that the comback win was on the cards. KES scored a good try at the start of the second half, and maybe they would have staged a further come-back and won. But so could Northwood have scored another try and extended their lead. Who knows. I am not saying they would have run away with it at all, but many write ups seem to only be looking at the match through 1 lens. To be fair, Northwood probably should have been 3 tries up at the end of the 1st half, with a try disallowed for a highly questionable forward exchange as the Prop dived over the line. It took KES 35 minutes to register a single point. When the game was called, it was not like KES were on attack in the NW tryline. Northwood in fact had entered their half again, and were unlucky to be called back for a marginal forward pass. They had a scrum, the KES prop popped up due to pressure and they re-set. The game was called off. Like i said, KES may have been able to apply more pressure and score more tries, but based on 35 minutes of rugby, any neautral would have to say that NW were the better team untill that point. Would have been a great final 20 mins or so. Nevertheless the school has not stated that we won, which is commendable. I will be interested to read how KES report on the result.

Whilst I agree with your comments, what the Lions selectors should be doing is watching other schools that never get a look in. Every year there are one or two boys that were never in contention for the Lions at Craven Week making an impact at Varsity Cup/Young Guns.

Both yesterday & the infamous abandonment vs Affies in 2017 are official “no result” regardless of what social media scores may be posting. The “no result” was agreed upon by the coaching staff of both schools together with a referee panel. There is no points log or league and therefore the “result” is not important in the bigger scheme of things. It was however turning into an epic game after a very strong start by an excellent Northwood team. The Reds are adamant that they had a try disallowed in the first half too but I can’t comment as I haven’t rewatched the game.

So lyk elkeen se volgende vyf kragmetings:
Affies vs Garsfontein, Paul Roos, Boland, Grey en Jeppe
Grey vs Paarl Gim, Helpmekaar, Garsfontein, HJS en Affies.

  Your petticoat is showing Grassy…as usual  KES had the wind at their backs and were playing down the slope in the 2nd half…plus they had crowd support, which is vital in the last 10 mins of a tight game. Thus, I highly doubt that “Northwood would have pulled away”.
    .
Having said all that, the game was ruled as abandoned by both coaches, both school principals and the referees – thus no result.

LIONS BATTLE FOR THE 9 JUMPER

Having now seen Jeppe, KES, Monnas and Noordheuwel scrumhalves, those Lions selectors definitely have a job on their hands. My previous and pre-season criticisms of McGurk at KES have subsided. Despite the struggles at KES, I think individually he is better this year than last year – much of it down to necessity, the chips are down and he is picking them up and keeping things moving, no pun intended.
Noordheuwel started today with a guy wearing 21 so I Imagine that is the second team 9? He himself though is pretty solid too though
My money is on our Talent still who edges it slightly for the 9. With Jaydon Viljoen from Monnas a shoe-in at 10.

I think Northwood were going to edge the game v KES but I will say that the lightning stoppage occurred when KES had their tails up-ish? I don’t know how many points that was going to materialize in to. But if we say that Northwood won this then we must say KES beat Affies in 2017 lol, pick your poison (medicine).

    JEPPE 20-21 NOORDHEUWEL

Such a winnable game on the day and it would’ve been such a big win for us, the morale.
So many moments that just needed a bit more care and finesse and we could’ve been here speaking a different story. 3 or 4 touch finders that had no legs on them  I guess it is harder than it seems, but Hollenbach at 10 in 1 word – “enigmatic”, an antihero of note, you just don’t know what is next. On now to Wildeklawer, doesn’t get easier, Maritzburg, and then according to me what will test a lot of these boys physically like they’ve never been physically tested before – Oakdale, yikes.

Best way to decide…(not fairest or most logical)
    * If “Our team” were behind at the time of stopping = game abandoned, no result.
    * If “Our team” were in the lead = claim the win and just tell everyone, over and over. Then it becomes part of the mystique and folklore, like Mannetjies Roux or Bennie Osler or Frik du Preez, or that legendary team of ’13 etc.
As much as we like statistics in this game, I think we like the legendary recollections and stories more.

On another note, it would tell us a lot to find out how many players make at least one 1st team appearance during the course of a season. On average, I’m guessing 28 +.
Times really have changed, when u look at old team photographs from years ago…there’s 15 or maybe 16 guys in the photo with a coach.

As far as I’ve heard the official result is game abandoned. If (as you say) the result stands if 20 min has been played, then KES will take the win against Affies in 2017 !! Game was abandoned at half time due to lighting with KES 16-7 up

Agree. I think you generally see the big boys now have a squad of 45-50 players going through the whole preseason together. E.g., PRG had 46 guys go over to the UAE over December. Next level bigly indeed.

I think the way the game is going, your Elite (First XV) team shouldn’t even be 23 players… think Rassie with the Boks, you gotta create depth. Think Leinster who rotate and manage their players NEXT LEVEL BIGLY!

    BESERINGS IN SPANNE

Absolutely I agree that it’s swings and roundabouts. And I agree that it was a clear-cut red. Red card at school level’s only 15min in a 70min game though, so probably even shorter in a 60min game. Still significant, of course.

Swings and roundabouts, Millies should have been playing with 14 for most of the match. The wings yellow card was red at a higher level. Millies very impressive though for a B league WP school and the twins are brilliant. I can see this side beating Bishops…..but I don’t think they play them

Westville looks like a handful – very exciting backs. Siyaya is different gravy, of course, but Koopman and some others also seem like quality ballers. Not sure they’ll quite mix it consistently with the real big boys yet, but they could definitely beat anyone on their day! As much as I backed Millies, I’m also very glad for Glenwood’s resurgence.

Dit was so hittete teen beide.

    BESERINGS

Genade mense, beserings sal daar altyd wees.
    My nederige opinie:

Well done KES. To be totally honest , I did not see this result coming as I rate the Rondebosch team very highly. With full respect to KES this year , I truly believe that the Rondebosch team of 2025 is a much stronger team on paper. However our beloved game never is won on paper and it just proves again that against all probability any result is possible in this top tier of SA schoolboy rugby. I am sure Rondebosch will continue to have a great 2025 but all credit to KES for this great result.

I remember some years back in 05 at SJC fest, Selborne were expected to get a hiding from Affies and ended up winning!

Rondebosch weren’t expecting that for sure. I knew KES were going to dig deep, their supporters are so amazing, they believed, and the Reds showed what happens when you play with utmost dedication, commitment, humility, and 0% ego…Rondebosch were maybe only a little inflated but it was still too much.

Well done Jeppe on your win. Selborne are shocking. Jeppe discipline causing the scoreline to be quite flattering. The affies match may give Paarl Gim vs KES a run for its money.

Great game. The twins are special, not sure how the big Wineland schools have not scooped them up. Enjoyed the Millies blonde flank too. Happy for the Glenwood boys, another draw would have been bitter.

Millies-Glenwood is probably the schoolboy game of the year so far. Millies’ inability to compete with their forwards finally caught up to them in the end. Chadwin Sellidon is an absolutely magical little player – should be on the Sevens’ radar without a doubt. Great BMT from Glenwood’s kicker at the end.

Glenwood went to sleep in the 2nd quarter though. Millies wing should be red, but I don’t believe that is an option at this level. Also, seems like Glenwood playing quite a few 2nd stringers which is how you cope with 3 games in 6 days I guess, so all in the same boat

That’s more like it from Millies! Proper champagne stuff from the Sellidon twins!

Glenwood tearing Millies to shreds here. Haven’t seen Millies play this poorly in years.

Dissipline is baie swak. Belaglike strafskoppe eintlik. Kon baie, baie maklik gister teen Glenwood verloor het.
