Western Cape Schools performance table 2013

Well Tony Stoops, who provided the points record of Nico Malan’s Selwyn Davids (425 points for the season), keeps all sorts of interesting stats of Western Cape schools and players on his terrific website www.stoopstats.co.za

Amongst the interesting bits of info is this performance table that ignores the variable of relative strength and simply focuses on schools records in an effort to determine who the best achieving teams of 2013 in the Province are.

Interestingly the two top schools Paarl Gim and Outeniqua occupy the top spots, which points to two things; the first being who unbelievably good their respective seasons have been and secondly how well matched up many of the Tier-2 and Tier-3 that battle it out with rivals down south really are, in that none of them are within striking distance of the two at the top. Remember that Paarl Gim and Outeniqua will meet in the Burger Trophy season finale.

A school worth noting on the list is Hermanus in third place. If you’re not from the Western Cape, Hermanus comes to mind mainly because of whale watching. However the school’s rugby also got a mention due to the fact that the powerful Outeniqua no.8 Dian Koen, who represented Boland at Craven Week in 2012, did  so while attending Hermanus. Koen’s move to Outeniqua is believed to have been inspired by the Bulls, who have contracted him for 2014 a long with a few other high profile Kwaggas players. Hermanus have still done very well without him this season. Tony Stoops comments that they have redhot backline. Their big test comes in the Burger Trophy final for medium schools against Selwyn David’s Nico Malan team. Given that both teams love to run the ball, in the right weather conditions, that game could be a final to remember.
