TSRF: the biggest 1st XV rugby festival in South Africa

Tony Stoops goes to great lengths every year to give something back to the Western Cape school rugby community. He does it  in the form of a meaningful school rugby festival. The 6th annual Tony Stoops Rugby Festival will again be the largest 1st XV rugby festival in South Africa. 33 schools, many of which would otherwise not have had the opportunity to take part in a festival, will compete at Tygerberg High in the Cape.  Together with the hard work and time that goes into putting a huge festival of this nature together, comes the financial requirement. Here Tony is blessed to have African Bank and a few other generous sponsors on board to assist him with covering the costs of this worthwhile initiative. …

It’s a really cool initiative by the organisers of the NWU-Puk Skouspel. Every year they select a team of stand out players from the schools that participate in the tournament. This year’s team turned out to be a blend of talent from all around the country.

Fixtures and results aside from NWU-Pukke and Graeme Rugby Day.

Outeniqua grabbed everyone’s attention with their comprehensive 68-3 victory over the “Tiere” earlier this week. There were however a couple of other surprises. Daniel Pienaar put their defeat at the hands of St Andrews behind them and recorded a morale boosting 13-9 win against Oakdale. The biggest upset of the week to date belonged SACS who could not register a point against Bellville, eventually losing 15-0.

Glenwood and Garsfontein have both had to deal with off the field pre-season dramas involving schools from their respective regions this year. With those matters now put to bed all the attention will be placed firmly back where it belongs: on the field of play. The two schools will meet in the main game on Thursday, 21 March 2013 being Day-1 of this year’s NWU-Pukke Skouspel being held in Potchefstroom.

Paarl Boys High overcame a determined San Isidro from Argentina 38-20 after leading 24-6 at the break. The match played in 37 degree heat was Boishaai’s first for 2013. Judging by the result and the calibre of the opposition who’s reputation had been enhanced by good showings against Drostdy and Paul Roos, Boishaai has all rights to feels happy about this positive start to the season.…
