@kcob: They have only played two games, but based on said results, they appear to have a reasonable team. They drew with Montana (from Pretoria) and lost by one point to KES.

In my opinion, if you are playing them at Saints, you will probably win by a smallish margin, but if you are playing at home, you’ll win comfortably.

@kcob, agreed on the tours. Maybe instead of a Easter tourno the schools could do a Cape Town or Gauteng 10 day your playing 3 games. Cape Town play 3 of Bishops, Wynberg, Rondebosch and/or SACS. JHB tour could be 3 of KES, Jeppe, St Stithians, St Johns, PBHS or Parktown. Nothing against the big Afrikaans schools but as Glenwood is an English medium school we should be playing against English medium schools of a similar size, age and traditions. Just my opinion. You will get closer games and closer ties…

@Vleis, totally agree that whilst Kearsney has the cream, maybe the likes if Grey Bloem would consider Glenwood, Westville and Kearsney their easier games of the three. I too think its too tough. Imagine the Super15 sides playing 3 games in 5 days, no chance. I think 2 in 5 max and the best matched teams play in the 2nd day. So on day 1 the winners then play each other on day 2 and losers vs each other. I would prefer Glenwood playing St Stithians, St Johns, Rondebosch, Wynberg etc than two or 3 top 10 schools in 3 days. We could lose all 3 and have played 6 lost 5 won 1 by then, not great for confidence going into the local season. Glenwood are batting in the wrong league, we are getting ahead of ourselves. A few good seasons with a few good wins does not mean we are ready for these big sides annually…..maybe 2 top 10 schools max….

Couldn’t answer that attendance question. I honestly have not been to others to compare kerf to. What’s the purpose of a tournament? Maybe we should do away with those and do as professional tours go (outbound) and have tours outside of the province; e.g.: Kearsney to Cape Town for 8 days but taking in two Saturday games.

On a related note, I don’t think that the Kearsney festival is good for SA schoolboy rugby as it has monopolized most of the top schools. In times gone by all the festivals were fairly balanced – i.e. some top schools, some strong schools, some average schools.

Each day would throw up a whole spectrum of different fixtures – top v top, strong v average, strong v top, etc. Apart from being more interesting (e.g. David v Goliath, etc), it is also much better for the conditioning of the players, as the top teams can rest some of the more weary players when playing less strong schools. I bet that Glenwood now wishes that it could replace Paul Roos, Selborne and Paarl Gim with Paul Roos, St John’s and Paarl Gim, or even Sterling, St John’s and Paarl Gim.

Isn’t the Wildeklawer supposed to be the strength v strength festival. Even said festival only has two games in three days, rather than three on five days.

Despite the fact that Kearsney has most of the top schools, the average attendance figures are significantly lower at there than at the festivals in Johannesburg.

Hopper; that is a long season indeed. I reckon your boys need to trim down to about 18 max. KC don’t have as many of those away ones you guys have. Our major ones will be Paarl Gym, boland Landbou, framesby, and those dares darstardly tough Windhoek games. I think oath wise a moderately tough season but well timed breaks etc yeah, good luck at KERF!

I agree Hopper! Find horsey’s comments oddly out of context again. No bearing and ineffectual. Gw will have a good season. Point we were making ( not erring on the negative) was that the season line up is tough; that’s it. Grrrr

@Horsie, firstly only once has a couple of teams lost by 100 and that was a lower team against Grey Bloem in 2011. Secondly, Glenwood have played 4, lost 3. Remember the win against Framesby. Also, two of the losses were by less than 3 points. I do agree their fixtures are crazy, I think only Grey Bloem, Grey PE, Boishaai, Paarl Gim, Affies and Paul Roos can claim anything near as difficult, especially the tough schools in a row in a month…

Yeah but its too much, they have 3 losses already, they could have lost 5 before their first traditional fixture of term 2. Not good. Playing Monument is going to make matters worse. Also, boys don’t learn anything from 100+ point losses

I know some school take the easy road; and I agree that in order to strive towards better rugby; play the better schools! But; then play fewer, and keep some top opposition. KC are playing 18 this year. I think they have done well pitting the boys against some good opposition; but no too hectic, and not a schedule that too hectic, but tough all the same. GW sounds busy, and some really tough consecutive games. College and gw are definitely the leaders in taking in the giants of SBR. Big respect for that. Just saying perhaps not so much in one season. Proud of the KZN schools for taking on more of the bigger schools though.

@kcob: are you talking about the Glenwood ‘season of death’ fixture list? If we win half the games it will be a miracle. The poor kids are not given a chance. Playing 10 or more top 20 schools in a season! Michaelhouse, KES etc play it clever playing a max of 15 games giving the biggest breaks possible so the teams are fresh as possible. This way they win more games and can then claim unbeaten seasons. Glenwood’s fixtures are just stupid! Paul Roos, Selborne and Paarl Gim in 6 days after tough games against Garsfontein and Drostdy a few days earlier….

Yeah. Your boys have been doing another tough stint. Don’t you think at this level “less is more”? Perhaps 16- 18 games max; drop the reverse matches vs college and DHS, to make way for those tough games you guys are playing consistently. Phew; feel for those guys. I even asked Kearsney to limit their games to about 17-18 too; otherwise is just numbers over quality.

I’m going to KERF on the Monday especially for the Outeniqua vs Grey College, probable no1 vs no2 in SA. Obviously also for Glenwood vs Paarl Gim, hopefully the underdogs can put in a big performance. Just a little concerned all the sides will be stuffed from the previous 2 days so won’t be at the same level…..

@Tjoppa: Unfortunately this boy and some of his ilk has given scouts in general a bad rep, and deservedly so, as long as the old-school school scouts or talent spotters, that work for the good of a school and free of charge are not included in that camp, as that would be an insult….

@BoishaaiPa: News spreads quickly when it involves a powerhouse school having a close call. I’ve heard that the outstanding young flyhalf is related to a backline player in the Boishaai team and that he may have already signed for the Kings. All indications are that he is a talent of note though. Also so good that we still have these talented played players in lesser known teams that don’t often play against the big schools.

Hats off to Drostdy today. At a point early on in the game it was questioned whether they were good enough to be matched up to Glenwood, that’s how one-sided it looked. They dug deep, showed the character and the BMT at the end to win it. Supporters and coaches can’t ask for more from a team.

Not a good result for Glenwood. I expected them to win this one. Seems like they lost it due to errors and poor decision making. Hope they get this right before next weekend. Safe journey home and hope there are no serious injuries ahead of next week.

Glenwood left 3 almost certain try-scoring opportunities on the field with poor final passes/catches. That must be frustration plus for them.

With 2min to go Glenwood was leading 31-27 and chose to tap n go a straight fwd kick penalty. Cost them dearly in the end #NWUPukkeSkouSpel. In the 35th min Drostdy then scored a runaway try to win 34-31. Another high scoring game except this time Glenwood led all the way til the last minute
