Fixtures and results aside from NWU-Pukke and Graeme Rugby Day.

Outeniqua grabbed everyone’s attention with their comprehensive 68-3 victory over the “Tiere” earlier this week. There were however a couple of other surprises. Daniel Pienaar put their defeat at the hands of St Andrews behind them and recorded a morale boosting 13-9 win against Oakdale. The biggest upset of the week to date belonged SACS who could not register a point against Bellville, eventually losing 15-0.

@Queenian: Their traditional Interschools with Volkskool could be a total mismatch this year…Volkskool lost to our C team 75-0 at Rietbron festival!..

@BoishaaiPa: Ye schools like Union who if i stand corrected has only about a 190 boys in the senior school has these freakishly good teams every 10/15 years this might just be one of them.

I do know there tradional opponents are Kingswood/Muir/Gill/Adelaide Gym so should be a good year for them.

@Queenian: Union flyhalf Jason Vers , who, ironically, attended Klein Boishaai until Grade 3 ,was playing against cousin Ferlin Vers, the Boishaai wing!…Boishaai pack not as big as expected pre-season. According to my own observations they are more or less the same as previous years. This was not a typical Boishaai game and was a real mess on all fronts…fortune favours the brave and kudus (pun intended) to the Graaf-Reinet boys for pouncing on errors and kicking their penalties.

@BoishaaiPa: Was at the Graeme day hats off to your old school there forwards lived up to there pre season hype big and strong i think as far as i am aware they out weighed the Queens pack by 108 kg,s which is massive.

The other team that impressed me was Marlow did nothing fancy but did all the basics well and this after beating Noordkaap a week earlier.

@Vleis: lovely to see Union playing well – KES used to have an annual tour in the ’80s to Union and Grey High – we were hosted in the hostel at Union and spent many hours trying to get into the girls hostel

Tough rugby as well – EC farmers sons – tough buggers

@beet: The flyhalf is Jason Vers I think, who played CW last year for EP CD.

@Vleis: Union plays against Kingswood soon, so that will be a good test of their consistence coz Kingswood are not a bad team this year.

@Tandem: What makes the performance far more remarkable is the fact that HJS is a great rugby school. Let’s not forget that they were #1 in the country last year and I’m sure that they will be up there again this year, or close to it.

Union must have one of those freak years. The key will be to keep their players injury free, which impacts small schools much more than large schools.

@beet: Wow, Union High has only 150 boys in the whole High School, which is probably less that HJS has in one grade. That is some performance from them!

Yes it was and everyone in attendance seemed to agree that the player of the match was the Union High flyhalf, who proved to quite a player.

@Rugger fan: St Johns have lost 2 from 2, against Jeppe 59-24 and against Bennies 22-18.

@beet The Upington Festival has been cancelled so our boys have an extra week to prepare for our next game against Noord-Kaap at the Maritzburg Fistival.

Last week, St Alban’s one point win over Bennies flattered the latter, but this week St Alban’s 16 point win over Parktown flattered the former. Bennies’ final try last week was certainly not a try and St Alban’s final try this week was certainly not a try.

I felt a bit sorry for Parktown as they were 22 to 5 up with about 20 minutes to go, but lost by 38 to 22…and then had salt rubbed into their wounds when the final try was unfairly awarded to the hosts to take the score out from 31 to 38. Hopefully Parktown will bounce back.

Just out of interest, at the end of last year, Parktown beat the touring Dulwich College team, which was the top school in England last year…and this year Dulwich are in the final again.
