The Sharks and Eastern Province under-19 teams clash in a must win round-robin match at Kings Park on Saturday, 27 September 2014 (09h30). Along with the Golden Lions, the the three teams find themselves battling it out for the last remaining semifinal spot in this year ABSA under-19 competition. The Lions have a bye this weekend but appear to have a slightly easier finish after that, so defeat for either of the other two will probably spell the end of their hopes of making the playoffs. …

I switched on the telly this morning and caught the highlights of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) soccer match between Ajax Amsterdam of Holland and Paris St Germain (PSG) of France. And I know, I know, not many of you who come to read the pages here have any time for soccer but bear with me – I believe there are going to be some parallels to be drawn between the declining Dutch football league (Eredivisie) and the future of professional rugby structures in South Africa.…

Existing Kearsney head coach Frank Lubbe enjoyed a fitting end to his tenure at Kearsney when his team won the Voortrekker Sevens tournament on Saturday. Ironically the team they beat in the final was Maritzburg College, where Lubbe will ply his trade next year. On Botha’s Hill, the process to find his replacement is underway. Including Lubbe, Kearsney has had just 10 head coaches during a total of 73 seasons as a KwaZulu-Natal tier-1 team.…

When it was brought to my attention, this one sort of reminded me of the late Gerbrand Grobler who in the latter part of his sports career would charge into the crease to deliver a ball for the Northern Transvaal cricket team during the summer months and then cross the Jukskei and turn out at fullback for the Transvaal rugby team during winter.…

An article in the Rapport newspaper (http://www.rapport.co.za/Nuus/Nuus/AfriForum-is-bereid-om-internasionaal-te-veg-20140906) mentions that a legal team of AfriForum will be acting on behalf of six under-16 players and their parents in a matter to oppose the racial quota system in South Africa. The complaint will be lodged with the IRB and will be taken up with the International Court of Arbitration in Sports (Lausanne, Switzerland), if the IRB is unwilling to prohibit the racial quota system in South African rugby. …
