@Rugger fan: You are quite right on Lood.

It is also worth considering the context that relatively few test matches were played in the ’70’s and ’80’s. NZ toured in ’70, ’76 and Cavaliers in ’87. We went there in ’81. The Lions were here in ’74 and ’80. throw in a couple of two match tours by England in ’84, France and Ireland or South America and that’s it. There were no tactical substitutions either so guys who sat on the bench, like Malcolm Swanby against the ’74 Lions, did not get capped.
Nothing like the international schedules today. The provincial schedule also had far fewer games and all provincial players, and Springboks, turned out for their clubs between provincial games.

I stand corrected – but Lood Muller got one or 2 games for the Boks too.

    A few interesting characters from the decade – I’m sure that I’ve missed a few;
The only Springboks that I can see are Tim Cocks and Hugh Reece- Edwards. Wally Watt, Tim Cocks, Gus Ferguson and (I think) Don Spiers were members of the Natal side that beat Northern Transvaal at Loftus in 1980. If players made CW in more than one year I’ve only mentioned them in the first.
    1970
Wally Watt – Natal rugby, Tim Cocks – Springbok rugby
Daryl Bestall – SA hockey & Cricketer
    1971
Garth Giles, Don Spiers – Natal rugby
    Mike Halliday – USA rugby
    1972
    Neville Daniels – Natal cricketer
    Laurie Sharp – Natal rugby
    1974
Rob Hankinson, Gus Ferguson – Natal rugby
    1975
Mark Rich, Pierre de Lange, Cliffy Brown – Natal rugby
    1976
Gudgie Dixon, Neville Johnson – Natal rugby
    1977
Lood Muller, Paul Judkins, Mike Barker, Sarel Erwee – Natal rugby
    Andy Pfaff – WP rugby
    1978
Cliffy Hopkins, Craig Jamieson – Natal rugby
    1979
Dereck la Marque – Natal rugby, Hugh Reece – Edwards – Sprinbok

Another side to be aware of was Grosvenor from the Bluff in the 60’s & 70’s….

@meadows: yeah, even schools like Dirkie Uys, Andries Pretorius, Kuswag & Gelofte had some strong years. Richards Bay & Port Shepstone had a couple of good years too.

I was paging through the College Rugby team history – and to see that team like Voortrekker (the annual “Boer War” match”); Weston; Alex were all regular fixtures and now are no longer.

And then is was interesting to see that Westville only made it on to College’s fixtures in the mid 80 – and took a few years to register their first victory too.

@Veg: It is easy to forget in the current school landscape what formidable opposition schools like Voortrekker and Port Natal, as well as Ixopo and Empangeni etc, were in the 70’s evidenced by 6 Voortrekker reps in the ’73 side and 5 Port Natal reps in “78

I’m pretty sure that Rob Hankinson played two years SA Schools.

@Grasshopper: I didn’t think that La Marque made it in ’77 but Natal Schools played Transvaal in a curtain raiser at Kings park later that year and he may have played in that game.

You are quite right – Mike Barker was a formidable figure on a schoolboy rugby field in that era. He played SA Schools in ’78 and went on to play on the flank for Natal. He bulked up considerably and was eventually used at prop by Dbn Collegians before concentrating on power lifting where he became a Springbok.

@Grasshopper: There are only 19 names printed on the 1978 CW program so possibly his is the one that was left out by mistake.

Ixopo must have had quite a side in 1970 with 3 Natal Schools players.

I thought Derek La Marque made it at least 2 years in a row. One that stands out for me was Michael Barker at DHS. My dad and uncle who went to DHS said he was an absolute animal, destroyed sides on his own and loved the ‘heated’ stuff…

The ones I can pick up that are missing are 1970 – LJ Aitken, 1972 – BL Dennison, 1973 – MK Thompson (made SA Schools in 1974, for rugby and cricket), 1979 – PM Phillips

    70’s were good for College – played 132, won 113, drew 10, lost 9.

I see that in the 90’s Port Natal had a lot of Craven Week players, sad how things have changed. In recent times you don’t see player from Port Natal,Ixopo,Empageni,Grovenor, St Henry’s etc…

The two recent players that I can recall is B.Ndlovu Voortrekker 2014 and Sikhosana Port Shepstone 2012. Hopefully they are more good players (Craven Week Material) to be selected from lower tiers and that they shouldn’t be over look in terms of the schools they go to. Because we’ve seen that these small schools can also produce good players.
