27 March, 2013 beet 76

That weight  provided a good combination of size, strength and mobility once upon a time . These days 760kg is on the small side. The listed Outeniqua starting forwards for the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival (KERF) have a combined mass of 863kg…

Daniel Pienaar put their defeat at the hands of St Andrews behind them and recorded a morale boosting 13-9 win against Oakdale. The biggest upset of the week to date belonged SACS who could not register a point against Bellville, eventually losing 15-0.

Super Rugby Superbru Round 6

22 March, 2013 beet 10

Eeek! We are a little behind with coverage of Superbru Super Rugby. Last weekend had many games that were tough to predict and this weekend could also cough up a few surprises.

The topic of good leadership comes up on this blog from time to time. When looking at the sad state of affairs on our SB leaderboard, clearly it has no application here. The qualities associated with a good leader are nowhere to be found. …

Updated. Super Rugby kicks off in South Africa and New Zealand today. College Old Boy Slam will be hard pressed to hold onto his rather fortuitous lead once the real contenders get going this weekend in a compo that is all about skills and has zero to do with luck in spite of what everyone else and your own human logic tells you.

Kearsney ready to kick start the year 2013

21 February, 2013 beet 9

Kearsney will head into their first major contact session of 2013 without a number of their stalwarts. Just like Tier 1 opponents College and Westville, the overlap of the rugby pre-season with the summer sports calendar has resulted in a number of first choice players  not being made available for these warm-up games. This along with injuries sees Kearsney travel to the Voortrekker Rugby Night Series in Pietermaritzburg for a match against locals College without the likes of their SA Schools duo of Dan and JL du Preez, highly rated Ayron Schramm, playmaker Tyler Smith, the ever-reliable decision-maker Tristan Tedder and strongly-built Guy Francis.…

New school scrum law Q&A with Boishaai’s technical guru

31 January, 2013 beet 8

Thanks to the efforts of BoishaaiPa and with the help of a few SBR bloggers who have a vested interest in what happens in the scrums, we were able to present Richard Visagie, the Paarl Boys High scrum guru with a handful of questions about the new school scrumming laws that will come into effect this season. Apart from playing over 100 games at hooker for Boland, Richard has over 30 years of school rugby coaching experience. Along the way he has coached the WP Craven Week team and is currently a WP school selector. He has been responsible for helping to shape the careers of a  number of good props (and hookers) over the years.…
