KZN takes school Sevens more seriously

18 August, 2014 beet 8

Realising that school Sevens rugby offers players more opportunities than possibly given credit for in the past, including the chance to represent the provincial under-18 team in a televised game or two, which in turn could open several doors to a player who performs well, the KZNRU under the guidance of chairman Noel Ingle has introduced a welcomed restructuring, with the intention of making the selection of players a lot fairer than in the past.…

De Allende to become yet another “small” school Bok

14 August, 2014 beet 0

Who says you have to go to a big fancy traditional rugby school to become a modern day Springbok rugby player.  Milnerton old boy Damien de Allende will become Springbok number 862 when he runs onto the field in the Green and Gold on Saturday. It will be a proud moment for the player, his loved ones, his supporters and his old school. All who are affiliated to non-mainstream rugby schools should also find cause to rejoice.…

ABSA u19 Currie Cup – Week 6 teams & results

14 August, 2014 beet 24

Of interest this weekend is that HTS Middelburg’s reliable scrummy Rowan Gouws starts for the Sharks while regular captain Ayron Schramm is ruled out by injury and flu. The strong Free State team’s starting lineup includes Limpopo sprinter Arno van Staden who came off the bench last weekend to score two tries in the win against the Leopards. Glenwood’s Corne Vermaak who’s had off the field issues to take car of also finds a spot on the bench this weekend. Outeniqua’s powerful no.8 Dian Koen is at long last called on to be a reserve for WP. Two really good hookers go head to head when Pieter Jansen (EG Jansen, Golden Lions) takes on JP Jamieson (Kingswood/Grey PE, EP Kings). The Lions regular flyhalf Shaun Reynolds (Goudveld) is out meaning that Jameel Warnick of Garsfontein steps in. He will be up against the versatile Jason Baggott who usually plies his trade at scrumhalf…

Match report: Glenwood beats Maritzburg College 21-20

11 August, 2014 beet 171

Maritzburg College versus Glenwood games on Goldstones in Pietermaritzburg should carry a health warning. The closing stages of the last four matches between the KwaZulu-Natals intercity rivals on the famous ground have gone down to the wire. There is no ways this can be good for the hearts or nerves of the respective supporters but boy does it make for entertaining to watch rugby. …
