SA Schools outplay France in Under-18 Series
France U18 scored the first try of the match when scrumhalf Antione Dupont dummied his way through to score under the posts.
They continued to pressurize the home team, but the South African proved to be dangerous on the counter attack, which later allowed them to score twice from quick turnover ball.
The SA Schools leveled matters when wing Andell Loubser scored after a good piece of individual skill by Bosch, who sent his winger away with a clever inside pass.
Anthony Belleau, the French flyhalf, slotted a penalty which allowed his side to regain the lead at 10-7. A few minutes later the home team fell further behind after a Belleau drop goal.
However, the match swung into South Africa’s favour and the lively Bosch again played a pivot role in the next try, scored by outside centre Barend Smith. Bosch slotted the conversion to hand the SA Schools a slender 14-13 lead at halftime.
Five minutes after the resumption lock Jaco Willemse powered his way over for a well-deserved converted try. The French tried their best but the SA Schools forward kept the pressure on them with some good movements.
Right at the end, Loubser rounded off a good performance for the SA Schools when he dotted his second try after a slick backline movement.

SA Schools score impressive win over Wales U18
They raced into an early lead courtesy of a well-worked set piece play. Daniel Pienaar THS prop Lupumlo Mguca found himself in space from a line-out move near the Welsh line and his off-load found Southdowns College lock Aston Fortuin who dotted down under the posts in the second minute of play.
Fly half Thinus de Beer kicked the easy conversion and was involved again seven minutes later when the Waterkloof High School pivot slotted a good penalty kick.
De Beer converted his second of the afternoon when good follow-up play by Menlo Park winger Andell Loubser resulted in a try for Daniel Pienaar THS midfielder Heino Bezuidenhout.
The flyhalf also kicked penalties in the 19th, 22nd and 29th minute of the half as Wales found it difficult to halt the South African attacks legally.
The SA Schools side enjoyed territorial advantage and had most of the possession as well, with a fourth minute penalty by Davy Jones the only answer the Welsh had in the first half.
The second half started in spectacular fashion when local Outeniqua High School lock Eduard Zandberg raced 50 meters down the touchline with the run resulting in a try for Garsfontein High School scrumhalf Embrose Papier. De Beer converted and at 33-3, it was all over bar the shouting.
There was more for the locals to get excited about as SWD midfielder JT Jackson rounded off a fine counter-attack started way back in the SA Schools half. Jackson, who hails from nearby Oakdale Agric in Riversdale, ran a great support line and was rewarded for that. Again De Beer converted.
De Beer was then yellow carded for a late tackle and this gave Wales the breathing space they needed to regroup. They attacked well in this period, applying pressure and enjoyed much better field position.
Centre Owen Watkin scored under the sticks, dancing inside the South African defence and flanker Josh Middelton scored after the buzzer went to give Wales something to build on for the final series of matches in Stellenbosch on Saturday.

England U18 hand SA Schools first defeat in four years
But England’s impressive attacking play saw them secure their third try of the half a few minutes later after outside centre Max Clarke gathered an effective pass and forced his way through two defenders to stretch their lead to 19-3.
Centre Harry Mallinder had a chance to extend their lead further in the 25th minute, but his penalty attempt went wide.
SA Schools wing Keanu Vers, however, scored a vital try for the hosts four minutes before half time after an encouraging attacking display in which they retained possession and applied pressure on England. With momentum on their side they spread the ball to the left wing and Vers dived underneath an England defender to score their first try of the match and reduce the deficit to 19-8.
England continued their fine form two minutes into the second half by winning a lineout steal in SA’s red zone, which flank Sam Underhill capitalised on to sprint to the tryline for their fourth try of the match and a 24-8 lead.
Vers, however, hit back in the 43rd minute with his second try after the SA Schools team gathered a loose ball and passed the ball to Vers, who used his pace to touch down. This reduced the score to 24-15.
The try bolstered the home team’s confidence on attack and they again put together phases and worked their way into England’s 22. The visitors’ lock Kieran Treadwell received a yellow card for playing the ball on the ground, but the hosts were unable to take advantage of the extra player as unforced errors cost them on a few occasions.
England flyhalf Rory Jennings, meanwhile, added three points to his team’s score with a penalty in front of the posts in the 55th minute to build up a 27-15 lead.
The SA Schools team, however, fought their way back into the match in the last 10 minutes with centre JT Jackson scoring their third try following a fantastic run up the wing by Vers, who handed off after drawing two defenders. Bosch converted to reduce the gap to 27-22 with six minutes to go.
This, however, was short-lived as the visitors slotted over a penalty in the next run of play to take a 30-22 lead.
The hosts had an opportunity to reduce the gap to one point with a late try, but Ver’s pass failed to find the support player two minutes from time, which secured England the eight-point victory.
In the earlier matches the SARU Regional Academy XV registered a 48-29 victory against Italy and Wales pipped France 10-9 in a hard-fought encounter.

@Babbelas: hulle is groot genoeg, maar net nie sterk genoeg nie. Vaardighede outbreak. Ek gryp nou syfers uit die lug, maar sa het seker 10 keer soveel spelers as England. Maar hulle het Vaardighede, wat in sa beperk is tot nu paar skole. As jy my nie glo nie, vra vir brendon venter of vir Murray mexted . Moet lees: ontbreek
@Babbelas: I have to disagree with you about the size argument. Everytime a team struggle we hear about size.
Kolbe, and others, are proving on a weekly basis that size does not matter.
Also not sure how much bigger our team can be.
1) Tight 5 average 112 kg per player – must be close to the senior team.
2) Pack average 105 kg – seems to me that they are big enough.
3) Backs average 85kg – This include Vers and Bosch that brings this down to 85. They were the smallest, but arguably the best backline players for SA.
Without them the average goes to almost 88 kg’s.
How much bigger do we want them, before we will ignore this argument and start talking about picking players that will be able to show their skills when under pressure ??
Alhoewel dit veronderstel was om die beste spelers uit skole regoor SA te gewees het wat dan ‘n span opmaak wat die land moet verdedig, moet ek sê dat dit wat op my TV skermpie gewys het, daar in die laeveld, dit beslis nie gereflekteer het nie.
Die kinders het nie aangevuur gelyk nie en die spel van die seuns wat ‘n groen en goud trui aangetrek het daardie middag was below average. Ek neem niks weg van die eerste 2 wedstryde teen Frankryk en Wallis ni, maar werklik het hierdie span teen Engeland nie gewerk nie.
Kan nie verstaan dat jy spelers in posisies kies omdat hulle juis daar goed vertoon het nie en dan hulle dan nie speel in daai posisie nie. Mos nie nodig om enige iets te bewys of kombinasies te toets nie. Sekerlik het die afrigters geweet Engeland gaan die moeilikste een van die drie wees en sowaar hulle berei nie voor vir dit nie.
Gelukkig laat sulke gebeurlikhede baie moed in die ander spelers uit skole regoor SA wat net sowel daar kon gewees het, maar ongelukkig beperk was tot die wedstryd se kyk oor die TV.
@BOG: Die laaste paar jare het Engeland baie sterk onder 20 spanne gehad so dis geen verassing dat hulle mededingend sou wees in die onder 18 toernooi nie! Ver al nie as jy kyk nou grote van hul spelers nie!
Met die uitsondering van 1 of 2 spelers dalk, was die SA Skole span die beste wat ons het! Ons het die groot agsteman en kaptein, Jaco Coetzee wat beseer was gemis! Sou ook graag vir Wiese op nr 7 wou sien!

@Babbelas: Eerstens, het Sa verloor teen Engeland, waar belangstelling in skolerugby maar laag is. Di n realiteit. As jy die wedstryd gekyk het, sou jy darem seker ook gemerk het dat dit n spansport is, en kennis geneem van die resultate deur die hele seisoen. Ook dat hulle die meerderheid van n span gevorm het wat die Bulls oorwin het, n span wat 9 spelers opgelewer het. ??? Laastens, daag ek jou uit om vir my te wys waar ek die insluiting van GCB spelers gepropageer het.
Ons was gewen deur ‘n BAIE groter Engeland span, hulle het ons fisies oorheers. Dink Wiese groot nr 7 moet in die begin span gewees het! Goeie grote is altyd beter as ‘n goeie kleintjie!
BOG, ek het die GCB PRG game gekyk, net Henry Immelman sou die SA Skole span versterk het. Ongelukkig is hy reeds 19!
En??? Laat ek dit nou anders stel. Indien daar nie ten minste 20 skolespanne in SA is wat hierdie “SA skolespan”sal wen nie, is skolerugby net so diep in die moeilikheid as sy senior eweknie. Dit dan selfs teen die agtergrond dat skolerugby in Engeland, maar relatief beperk beoefen word.
So unbelievably proud of the 3 Grey boys making the starting team. Well done Curwin, Keanu and Junior. All three of you deserve it.

Bosch will be more lethal from 15 wher he has time and space. For a tight game against England you need Thinus de Beer, he does not miss often. Also Marco J v Vuuren is the better nr 9 under pressure.

@Babbelas: Well done. Your team was spot on, although some are starting from the bench. Jaco Coetzee the Captain would have been an obvious pick if he did not get injured again. So you are given that one.
It is hard to say who the better players are the team that played Wales had a lot easier time so you cannot say they were better.
Bosch must play No 10 and Vers No 15 also the centres must pass the damn ball why else have wings there, I would keep the two wings from the opening game.
@Predator: Stem saam, Jackson is ‘n skitterende aanvaller maar hy sal moet werk aan sy verdediging. Blykbaar is hy nou eers in Gr11 so daar is nog baie tyd om te verbeter!
Was by gister se game op Outeniqua park in George. Ons was heeltemal te sterk vir Walles,…die score moes groter gewees het. Ek glo dat Bosch ‘n beter aanvallende loskakel as de Beer is. Bosch was skaars 5 minute op die veld toe breek hy van sy kwartgebied af tot in Walles se kwartgebied. Onvoorspelbare, op die ingewing rugbytalent wat so mooi is om na te kyk. Die span het as ‘n eenheid goed vertoon, alhoewel ek meer van die skrums verwag het. Zandberg het baie goed gespeel. Jt Jackson het die lyn ‘n paar keer mooi gebreek, maar sy verdediging is nie goed nie, nogal jammer want hy is ‘n groot seun wat die opposisie in flarde behoort te tackle. Sal ook eerder Vers op heelagter wou sien. Lekker om die room van skole rugby te sien saamspeel.
@spot: Stem saam met jou, Papier is goed. Hy en Tinus de Beer het ‘n goeie wedstryd saam gehad teen Wallis. Ek sal nie daai kombinasie breuk nie.

@Babbelas: Having scrutinised both games I would agree with your team with 3 changes. I would play Campher at 2 (his work rate was beter for me), at 3 I would play Smit (I believe he had a better game against beter opposition although he suffered in the last couple of minutes he played, Prinsloo suffered for longer in the first game or play each for a half) and 9 I would play Papier.
This is a very strong team and the tight five are only 5 kg lighter than the Bok team that played on Saturday
@Babbelas: I think England will struggle against that team – Just one change for me – IMHO Papier was easily the better 9.
Baie beter spel deur SA Skolespan maar weer was ook baie beter vir goeie rugby. In laaste game Saterdag teen Engeland behoort die beste span nou te speel na dat almal ‘n kans gekry het in die 1 ste 2 games! Sal interessant wees om die span te sien! Wat van:

Are Wales, France and maybe England significantly weaker then last year, or is this actually quite a good SA Schools side?
Huge pity Morne Joubert is injured, he would have been a great pick at 15 and could have shown what he really can do…..oh well….
@Mike: Ye agree what a pity they picked Vers at wing he is by far the best fullback in this squad and they pick him out of position what a shocker. In the 1st game Bosch single handed won the game.
What a massive pity Keanu Vers is being picked at left wing. Hein Kriek of all people should know how good he is at fullback after Keanu’s performance at the Markotter earlier this year.

@BOG: Ek aanvaar jou opinie, maar ek kan nie sien hoe enige skoolspan in die wêreld die SA nasionale span kan wen nie. Nie hierdie jaar nie.
Ek aanvaar dat die heel bestes dalk nie in elke posisie gekies is nie, maar die wat gekies is, is goed genoeg om nie net enige skoolspan nie, maar ook enige Provinsiale span te klop. Daar is genoeg talent. Hulle volgende wedstryd sal klaar baie beter wees as die een teen die Franse.
@Cappie: spell check! Talentvolle en nie volleyball nie. Aan die ander kant, miskien n”profetiese” fout.
@Cappie: jy moet miskien weer gaan Lees wat ek gese het. Ek het nie net van gcb gepraat nie, maar vele skolespanne. Self’s affies sal n kans staan. En moenie wilde gevolgtrekkings maak nie-ek propageer nie vir die insluiting van gcb spelers nie. Alhoewl hulle as n eenheid goed vertoon het, is daar nie juis iemand wie sy hand as individu opgesteek het nie. Maar dan weer, is rugby n spansport en beteken individuele briljantheid nie veel nie. Talent volleyball span? Ek hoop maar hulle stel dit ten toon. En daar is n groot verskil tussen objektiewe eerlikheid en suur druiwe.
@BOG: Ek kan sien jy is nog baie omgekrap omdat Grey, wat waarskynlik die beste eerste span het, nie meer teenwoordigers in die groep het nie, maar om enigsins te dink hulle gaan die talentvolle nationale span wen, is bietjie suur druiwe. Jammer ou maat.
@spot: I also don’t think any school team would beat the national team. The national team has the top players in every position. It is maybe not the nr1’s, but it is definitely within top 4, whilst in the school system, there are always weaker players in certain positions that will be targeted. It is like saying Ikkeys, the best club team would beat the Boks. Cannot see it happen!

@spot: Taking nothing away from Grey High- they beat GCB fairly and squarely. Absolutely no complaints whatsoever. But they played out of their skin on the day. But I would dare say, if they had played 10 matches, GCB would win 9. A national side , certainly does not mean the strongest side. Apart from the obvious social considerations, there are the normal “wrong” selections and this team has more than the usual “quota”
@Woltrui: If you are so impressed with Tshwanes weather, Im not surprised in the least that you are impressed by this “SA schools” side. Must be all the Bull players- the Bull side which lost before and during CW, but ends up with 9 players in the squad.@Rugbyman: Sekerlik baie dieper. Die sg “keurders” moet nou en dan miskien n rugbywedstryd bywoon. @Grasshopper: In fact, I think that any school in the “Top 20”, will give them a pasting, while any in the “top 50”, could surprize them.
@Grasshopper: I have a lot of respect for GCB and their achievements. But to expect of them to take on National sides is a bit unfair. Set the bar a bit lower, like Grey PE.
Any of the Top 20 schools can take on and beat the SA Schools team? Not a snowball’s chance. Rather pick a team from those schools and i am sure they will be competitive. That is the nature of the talent in SA. Ask 10 “experts” on this blog to pick a squad of 28 boys from the 100’s available, and you will get 10 different teams.

@Grasshopper: For me SA schools is the ultimate goal schoolboys can normally achieve. That should remain.
As for the games the team play, different game plans thrown together from different schools makes it difficult for the guys. Each school plays according to their strong points. If the SA team has different strong points to what you are use to for 4/5 years, it takes a bit longer to adapt.
I think they will improve for the second game and hopefully be 100% for the England game.
@BOG: @Grasshopper: Don’t agree with you. There is not a school in SA who would come even close to beating the SA schools side. Not even close. They beat a strong team in difficult conditions. The Frenchies are’nt total palookas. We had the beating of them through out the match.

@BOG: Isn’t that a bit obvious when school sides have been playing together for 5 years, they know each other and the way they play. The SA Schools side is a Barbarian type of side, never going to beat settled sides. I reckon any of the Top 20 sides could beat them. Why don’t we just play Grey Bloem (No1 side) vs England etc..
The question? How many school sides in SA would give the “SA schools” side a hammering? Answer, “MANY” Is it the fault of the selected players? Absolutely not. Stadig nou met al die aantygings en moet ASSEBLIEF nie al die junior spanne van die WP onder dieselfde kam skeer nie. Die o/13 CW speel die afgelope ses jaar al in die finaal op CW waarvan die laaste twee jaar gewen is. Dui dit op neopotisme??? Ek betwyfel dit baie sterk. Hierdie jaar se o/13 CW kom uit 18 verskillende skole. As daar dan nou kamstige swak keuses gemaak word hoe de duiwel kry hulle dit dan reg om so suksesvol te wees? Nee wat. Dit begin deur die regte spelers te kies wat daar hoort op meriete. Geniet julle dag se rugby.
@Ploegskaar: Ek voel vir daardie seun om so edoen verneder te word is sleg, maar dit is die nuwe wending in SA die by elke provinsie. In elke provinsie is daar so seun wat so voel glo my ek ken persoonlik vier ander seuns wat soorgelyke situasie hulself bevind het slegs n paar weke terug. Ons vra altyd hoekom word n skeidsregter bygekom en ek is bevrees nie lank van nou af gaan dit met keurders ook gebeur. Ek wag ook vir die dag wanneer daar strafregtelik teen sulke persone opgetree gaan word en dit le ook om die draai. Hierdie ringkoppe speel met n jong seun se loopbaan.
Iets anders die bokkies het n goeie wen gehad sou net wou sien dat die senters meer die voordeel lyn aangeval het, papier het die ritme vinniger gemaak net jammer ons voorspelers is groot en swaar en sal nie die tempo van die begin af kan handhaaf nie.

As for the WP-selctors – it seems their only claim to fame is being a selector and then they act as gods who bestowed the right upon themselves to mess with other people’s lives. Unfortunately, their type is all over the country.

It seems that the player who has signed for the Bulls has become “bigger than the game” (in his mind). He told his fellow players that he was not going to play for WP today. Did somebody beg him to play or what ?
If somebody does not want to represent his province, leave him out of the squad. Unfortunately the damage has been done !

@BuffelsCM: That particular player has decided not take part in trials next year. Disappointment is definitely part of a youngster’s learning curve, but as he has had to put up with this type of treatment on numerous occasions over the past 2/3 years, so I certainly don’t blame him. Having to deal with social politics is bad enough, having to deal with school rugby politics is asking too of such a young man.
For the record:
-was selected for the WP u16 HP Squad, had very good GK trials and was not picked at the expense of a player that has since converted to hooker as he was always too small for a prop
-was selected for the WP u18 HP Squad, had very good CW trials and was not picked at the expense of players outside the HP Squad, players that are unfit and overweight, players affiliated to the coaches’ school and players from 2nd teams
-was invited to play for the WP XV against Italy off the bench, told he would play the second half and 5 minutes later informed to piss off, we will rather play a prop that signed with the Bulls next year and a player no-one has ever heard of, but plays for a school where one of the selectors/coaches hails from

Just one comment: How can you invite a player to a WP XV practice and then tell him that his services are no longer required ? You don’t stuff a schoolboy around like that ! (He was the only player “not required”: pathetic organization !!!) The particular player was part of the Elite squad and made it through to the last set of trials. Others that didn’t even reach the last set of trials were selected however !!

It must be a bitter sweet achievement for some of the lads in matric whose schools are playing their last games of the season in the next 2 weeks. Would it be impractical to have the SA Schools games played in the September holidays? Just asking.
