ABSA u19 Currie Cup – Week 6 teams & results

Of interest this weekend is that HTS Middelburg’s reliable scrummy Rowan Gouws starts for the Sharks while regular captain Ayron Schramm is ruled out by injury and flu. The strong Free State team’s starting lineup includes Limpopo sprinter Arno van Staden who came off the bench last weekend to score two tries in the win against the Leopards. Glenwood’s Corne Vermaak who’s had off the field issues to take car of also finds a spot on the bench this weekend. Outeniqua’s powerful no.8 Dian Koen is at long last called on to be a reserve for WP. Two really good hookers go head to head when Pieter Jansen (EG Jansen, Golden Lions) takes on JP Jamieson (Kingswood/Grey PE, EP Kings). The Lions regular flyhalf Shaun Reynolds (Goudveld) is out meaning that Jameel Warnick of Garsfontein steps in. He will be up against the versatile Jason Baggott who usually plies his trade at scrumhalf

From SARugby.net
The DHL Western Province Under-19 side on Saturday kept their unbeaten run in the Absa Under-19 Provincial Championship A-Division on track with a hard-fought 16-11 win over nearest rivals Vodacom Blue Bulls to open up a five point lead on the log standing.

The Blue Bulls, the defending champs, are still second on the log after their closest rival, Toyota Free State lost 9-7 to the Cell C Sharks.

In the other match played this weekend, EP Kings shocked the Xerox Golden Lions, beating the home side 18-8 at Ellis Park.

A summary of the main results are:

Xerox Golden Lions 7 (7), EP Kings 18 (8)

An early try to the hosts seemed to pave the way for an expected victory, but they were outplayed by the Kings, who scored late in each half to seal the win.

Their first was scored by CJ Velleman, who now top the try scoring stats in the competition, having dotted down five times in six matches.

It was a tight match with few chances, but the Kings just played the big moments better and deserved the win.

Scorers:

Golden Lions (Under-19) 7 (7). Try: Fred Bezuidenhout. Conversion: Kobus Engelbrecht.
EP Kings (Under-19) 18 (8). Tries: CJ Velleman, Lindelwe Zungu. Conversion: Malcolm Jaer. Penalties: Jaer (2)

DHL Western Province 16 (6), Vodacom Blue Bulls 11 (3).

In Cape Town, DHL Western Province opened up a five point margin in the log standings by beating nearest rival, the Vodacom Blue Bulls, 16-11. It was a tight match with each side only scoring one try apiece.

The reliable boot of Ernst Stapelberg again helped the home side to keep their unbeaten run intact as he scored 11 points to take his season tally to 81. This is almost double the number scored by Arno Kotze (49), who is in second place on the point scoring log.

Stapelberg kicked two penalties in the first half to give his side a 6-3 lead at the break. A successful conversion of Daniel du Plessis’ early second half try and a third penalty gave the home side a 16-3 advantage.

Duhan van der Merwe scored for the visitors with ten minutes to play, but the Blue Bulls could not muster another score that would have saved the match.

The visitors did well in the first half after Dewald Human was yellow carded, but could not close the gap in the second.

Scorers:

WP (Under-19) 16 (6). Try: Daniel du Plessis. Conversion: Ernst Stapelberg. Penalties: Stapelberg (3).
Blue Bulls (Under-19) 11. Try: Duhan van der Merwe. Penalties: Simon Bolze, Dewald Human.

Cell C Sharks 9 (9), Toyota Free State 7 (7)

It was a low-scoring affair in Durban on Friday, where the home side secured a much needed win against Free State, one of the form teams in the competition.

The Sharks could not score any tries, but had in Innocent Radebe a reliable goal-kicker who slotted all three penalties on offer.

The Free State kicker, Andre Swarts, unfortunately missed with two attempts in the second half that could have altered the result.

Scorers:

Cell C Sharks (Under-19) 9 (9). Penalties: Innocent Radebe (3)
Toyota Free State (Under-19) 7 (7). Try: Gunthwer Janse van Vuuren. Conversion: Darren Baron

•In the B-Division, Boland beat Griquas 26-10, Limpopo Blue Bulls opened their participation in the competition with a 11-10 win over SWD in Polokwane, the Steval Pumas dropped a 15-46 to Valke and Down Touch Griffons beat Border 47-38.

@Nemo: I am not actually sure why The Jurie Linde try was not given, looked good to me.

I think Liebenburg will go further than Rikus, he has more size and a bit more pace too. Looks to be getting better and I was impressed. Havin said that, in this particular game, I think the spoils were shared between the two. Rikus was busy and played an instrumental part in the Du Plessis try. Both very good players, would like to see Rikus lose a bit of weight, would help his rugby

@RBugger I agree – Bulls should have won, was a bit unlucky with two tries not awarded and many lost opportunities with small errors. Du Plessis’ try was a great piece of brilliant play. Thought the Bulls no 8 outshadowed Rikus Bothma as Liebenberg was good in all facets of play – very versatile player (strong carrier, made turnovers, good line-out option and made hard hits). Will be interesting to see what will happen on Loftus in 2 weeks time.

Great game of rugby between the u19 WP and Bulls sides. D Du Plessis had another great game and is always a pleasure to watch. Both 8’s performed well and put in some huge hits on each other. WP fullback also looked incredibly dangerous. Bulls could have won this one, let themselves down with silly errors in the red zone.

@BoishaaiPa: Wollie is right. Martin spent a lot of time at lock for Grey PE. He played 8 at Craven Week. Fantastic ball carrier

Totally agree Beet we were poor. But Sharks deserved the win. These are proud boys and they’ll bounce back. Thought our Defence was outstanding. Seeing as the Sharks had 70% posession.

I haven’t watched as many Sharks u19 games as I would have liked but have to give credit to Daniel du Preez for filling in at 8. Had some good tight carries and urgency. Also the balance seemed good with big hearted Andre de la Rey at 6 and JL du Preez at 7. The pack of forwards really laid the foundation for the hard-fought 9-7 win. Meaker is a pleasure to watch throw a ball into the lineout. His accuracy level is unmatched. As soon as White came on, he missed his jumper. Ruan Kramer has a lot of heart and is a good carrier. The same can be said of Johan du Toit.

IMHO the Sharks u19 let down was the backline. Inny was not at his best as a team player. His linking with players outside him wasn’t good. Pieterse at 12 struggles to read the game and Louw at 13 was nothing to write home about. I rated No.9 Gouws last year. I thought he would be first choice this year for u19. He didn’t have the tidiest of games but he at least reads the situations and makes decisions based on whats going on in front of him. Would like to see Cele add a few kgs – he did’t look half bad.

The Sharks left points on the field. They had some good sustained redzone chances.

FS missed an easy penalty near the end which would have sealed victory. They looked like they really missed Reynolds at 10. Their backs looked good whenever they kicked ball ahead and chased but horrible when they had to use ball in hand. The fullback Gerrie Labuschange is/was a star 7’s play but had a lousy performance at 15. Their forwards also poor in the contact. I suspect it was an offday for what is usually a good team.

Not pretty but a very good win for the Sharks in the end.

@Griffon: I saw Louw when the Charkies played against the Bulls. In my opinion he won’t make it as a loosie. Too small. He didn’t grow since U/18. Genes are catching up. How many small sixes make it in pro rugby? Can really only think of 2 in SA. The reality is if he doesn’t make it at centre he won’t make the cut. Martin Groenewald, Bulls no 6, was a big lock at school. When I saw him play against the Charkies I was surprised at his size. Definitely to small for a lock. Also smaller than Allison, the no 7 for the Bulls U/19. Just about the right size for a no 6.

I see that the sharks have moved Louw from flank to centre, and have done the opposite with Esterhuizen. Really can’t see the reason for both moves, as both players are great at their prefered positions.

    @Buffel: 3pm Kingspark.

Lines been incredible, what a player – and yes, sadly, he is injured.

They playing a 10 at 15 today, I am not so sure about the move, I have watched him play and he seems short on gas.

The Doops can’t be expected to do everything, it makes it to obvious for the defensive side, not to mention, they get tired. They need to be able to rely on the other 13 players on the field to do their jobs too.

The problem, from what I have seen, is not the running and ground making, but rather lack of thinking – running from own try-line, not passing, not lookign for space, no pick and drive – basically, just not thinking properly on the field.

But this is a very talented team – if they can win today, it could be the start of a solid season – lose and that is that

Hope the boys can do the business as they are a talented bunch but the coaching leaves a lot to be desired.I see that now the S15 rugby is a thing of the past,Jake is more visible and hopefully can impart some of his vast knowledge. At present the game plan is non-existent . The Doops are solid boys and instead of standing off as dummy runners, must be given as much ball as possible to get ”go forward ball”. Cut mistakes down to a minimum and play in Free State’s half. Not rocket science. No Chris Lines?? Must be injured as he is one that has put his hand up so far this season. When and where is this game taking place?

At least the Cheetahs is winning on u.19-level.
Very glad to see Corne Vermaak there.
If only that little tiger Ethan Sias can get a chance on scrumhalf, the Cheetahs will be a much bigger force to reckon with. Add to that EG’s flyhalf of last year (Potgieter who is doing duty at u.21-level) and we will have a team that can compete with WP – and beat the Bulls again.
