#3: College wing Xolisa Guma comes up with a good run down the right to help College turn defence to attack in seconds after winning a turnover at the tackled ball.
#9: Grey wins a kickable penalty after College holds on the ground and centre Julian Jordaan kicks it. 3-0. Just reward for the attacking that Grey had done in the opening 10 minutes.
#12: Good buildup play by College with runs that sees them getting over the advantage line, cause Grey College to make a mistake. Centre Marcel Coetzee converts the penalty. 3-3.
#17: College produces outstanding quality play. Flyhalf Mac vd Linde is prominent before fullback Matt Kriel makes a linebreak and heads towards the tryline. Unfortunately for the visitors they knock-on in the redzone. Grey gets the ball back and proceeds to counterattack from very deep with ball in hand. Super draw and pass rugby results in centre Michael Andrade having a run down the right before linking up with wing Jacques Grobler who rounds off the move with a try. End to end stuff. Brilliant. Grey leads 8-3.
#24: Grey are starting to look very comfortable and dangerous as they make tight short passes stick while continuing to generate go forward. The waves of attacking runs disorganises the College defence and when flank Henry Slabbert picks a good angle of attack, he breaches by getting through a few weak tackle attempts to score. Jordaan converts. 15-3.
#27: Grey backs attack with conviction via a set move. Fullback Henry Immelman is put in space and tackled on halfway where Grey give away a penalty. The long shot at posts is missed by Coetzee.
#29: College are coming up with useful attacks of their own and finding favour down the left. Nevertheless it’s when Grey ups the tempo that College’s defence is stretched a lot more than College are able to do to Grey. Jordaan kicks another penalty. 18-3 to Grey.
#33: Mac van der Linde has a good dart down right but gets forced out inside the Grey 22m. Matt Kriel then attacks an unguarded channel and makes ground once again. He makes a good offload to hooker Masikane Mazwi on the right who is also forced out. College ends the half with a third promising attack. The visitors show good endeavour but don’t have many points to show for all the initiative shown.
Halftime Grey College 18 – 3 Maritzburg College
#37: Try for Grey’s Callie Janse van Rensburg playing hooker on the day in spite of wearing the no.1 jersey. Its the end result of more clinical play by Grey who used a good maul from a lineout to first suck in defenders before a delayed pass put Callie into space near the line. Jordaan converts. 25-3.
#38 Grey wings Grobler and Glenn Erickson combine and almost get in for another try. A forward pass call ends the blitz attack.
#44: More end to end stuff. First College’s No.8 Daryn Goodson links with flank Renard le Roux to get far beyond the advantage line. College go wide and replacement Brandon Holder has a very strong run down the right but near the line his offload is weak and to nobody. Grey turns over and Immelman counters with support. A forward pass denies Grey rewards again.
#48: College are not lying down. They show tremendous fighting spirit. Another attack eventually sees Mazwi crashing over in the left corner after his short lineout throw to the front and an interchange with prop Tiaan Steyn, 25-8.
#53: College wing Watson intercepts a flowing line move by Grey. He does well to hold the ball up for support to arrive and Grey errs at the ruck on their 22m line. College sets up a lineout near the tryline from the penalty. The lineout goes wrong. Grey gets a scrum but a tighthead results in Goodson picking the ball up at the base and as quick as flash he is over for the try. Coetzee converts. 25-15.
#55: Holder has another very good run with ball in hand but for the second time his pass is awful and the momentum is lost.
#56: An excellent carry by Grey no.8 Alex Jonker after a lineout is the go-forward for the next try. Jonker’s leg drive strength is impressive and the quickball resulting from his carry is put to good use. Neat passing sees Immelman who joins the line cruising in for the try which Jordaan converts. 32-15.
#60: Grey refuses to take their foot off the throttle. They stop College well inside their own half, resulting in a turnover scrum. They then pound on the pressure winning a couple of penalties, the second of which scrumhalf Dian Badenhorst, flyhalf Dwayne Wessels and replacement forward Tabo Maree all contribute to, to make the try scored by Maree. Its again converted by Jordaan. 39-15.
#64 The Red Black and White courage is evident. They come back with a try of their own, all the product of positive play. Its an attacking lineout that leads to a rolling maul moving towards the Grey line. Once it becomes static Renard le Roux breaks off the side and scores. 39-20.
#70: A last wave of Grey attack bears fruit. Grey unselfishly shift the ball out wide from a penalty near the College line. Callie Janse van Vuuren is on hand to crash over in the left corner. His second try. Jordaan has kicked very well on the day and rounds off a fine kicking performance by landing the difficult conversion. 46-20.

A Zarm inside a burger with lots of onion and tomato sauce. The tomato sauce had to be added to the Zarm before being inserted into the burger however. Gourmet meal of the highest order.
@Gungets Tuft: Ok..What is a “zarm”?..Sounds lethal….We just have the normal Boeries, Burgers and Pannekoek at Brugstreet…
@Dixon’s: Oh ja – and pull in one day to the real zarm farm on a school day and ask for a burger zarm – that’s another story altogether – a beef burger with a zarm tucked in there somewhere
@Dixon’s: You nailed it! The zarm means something to old boys and present boys only. Think of it as the taste of memories – on a day when boys are starving at school that thing goes down like a home sick mole! It is that nostalgia that makes the zarm taste good even today.
I remember being in the Air Force at Valhalla back in the day and buying Ma Bakers ( I think) Steak and Onion pies at the canteen – best chow ever when the alternative was smash and diarrhea on a varkpan – today it is at best what my family refer to as “those Caltex garage pies” – but to me I still remember that taste man – that and half a tin of condensed milk!
@Dixon’s: Bwahahha .. we should have warned you, the zarm is just a host for the stuff you cover it with. Be warned though, it has the ability to slam your ventricles like a barn door, and CPR costs extra …
@Gungets Tuft: i suppose just about every school has a “food” that all the boys love… but people from other schools find revolting. A mate of mine from Northwood always speaks lovingly about a pie on a roll, a pie of your choice placed in buttered bun. i nearly threw up when he told me about it but he swears that the Northwod guys loved it. At Glenwood we used to have these massive samoosas that we used to cover in tomato sauce …. couldnt get enough of them!

@Dixon’s: I wouldn’t have another if I was you. It’s like Guinness – acquired, and if you don’t like it then it tastes like the bottom of a cowboys saddle …. zarms are designed to fill a space. Sometimes in the stomach, sometimes between the left and right vectricle
I will say this though, a zarm is like a Harley … it is highly customisable, so we will just blame you cos you didn’t finish it well .. 8)

@Woltrui: Indeed they are, if the rankings can be believed. Karrent smaak the rankings, but at the top of the hockey ones most of those teams have played each other (5 KZN sides in the Top 10), or have a common opponent, so it lends a smidgen of credibility. But in the last few matches College have been beaten by Glenwood in Durban, and held to a draw by PBHS in Pretoria – which shows how close all the schools are. GCB were 3-2 right till full time when a short-corner earned College a flattering goal right on full time.

This weekend Paul Roos makes the trip to Bloemfontein. 38 busses departs Stellenbosch on Thursday. This does not include the 1st rugby and the teams competing on the Friday, as they leave on Wednesday. Massive weekend to look forward to!

@BoishaaiPa: No, the A team is really low on confidence at the moment, has taken a few lashes in recent weeks. The U14’s are an inigma this year, the A took a fearsome smack against Glenwood, the B less so, then the D beat Glenwood but took 72 from GCB. It’s something I have noted before about College – that their U14s seem to struggle, then suddenly come right at U15, more so at U16.
I put it down to the age group arriving from the 4 corners and not gelling, but who knows. If anyone can figure it out I will buy them free zarms at College for a year.
@Gungets Tuft: That u/14 group score doesn’t make sense…A team looses by 90 points, but B team wins?…and the rest looses heavily as well…Did you guys swop the A and B team around?…
@Gungets Tuft: It was great having you guys this weekend and as you say the score line does not reflect how tough some of the matches were. My son plays for U16A and belief me I was worried with the score at one stage at GC 26 vs MC 21. It will be interesting to see how the scores look on our visit next year.
@GreenBlooded: I reckon that the U14B should have sat at the prefects table and had the seniors bring them their chow.
@Gungets Tuft: A lot of the open games were quite close. The 2nds was a nail-biter – bounce of the ball this way or that could have nailed it for College. All good signs. What baffles me though is the discrepancy between the U14A and U14B – one takes a 90 point pounding and the other pulls off the only victory of the day. How does that happen? To beat them overall at hockey though – great result for College.

It was my first trip to GCB, and I now know why Grey seldom lose at home. There is a very intimidating atmosphere at Grey, something I have not felt at any other ground that I have been to. Normally travel over that distance is worth 10 points – at Grey is is at least double that. Trust me when I tell you that there is no stone unturned to make the opposition feel intimidated.
Despite the scoreline, which (naturally) I don’t believe reflects the match at all, I am extremely proud of the boys, the coaching staff and the College masters that toured. Some of the scores down the line make it evident that the teams may have been outgunned, but I didn’t see a College side lie down, nor were they down and out. It’s weekends like this, where the Red, Black and White stand their ground, that I know that all is good in College road.

As a fullback for rugby after school I think Kriel already ticks a few more boxes than many of the flashy players about. It didn’t show in the opening few minutes of this Grey match but is very composed at the back and safe under the highball. His attacking play seems to get better with every game.
Unfortunately Holder had a really good game against Kearsney
I also thought he was on fire against Pretoria Boys High during the 2nd team game.
@GreenBlooded: Got to agree with you on Holder. His father was a great flank for PMB Police in the 80’s. Brandon is the unsung Hero of College rugby this year. Kriel will be a force next year without a shadow of doubt.
@RBugger: Have to agree … been watching Kriel all season and he’s progressing very nicely, definitely looks to have some class – must admit I wasn’t blown away by his performances in Under 16 – will be interesting where he slots into the College plans in 2015.
@RBugger: I think the unsung hero for College in both this encounter and last week’s clash with Glenwood has to be Brandon Holder. On both occasions he played his guts out for the 2nds doing a super-human ammount of work only to be called up for the firsts early in the first half – and put in a huge performance for them as well.
@Beet: I was very impressed with Kriel!!! Will be watching him closely next year, could just be the most gifted ball runner out of the three. Will bulk a bit during the year and be a force next year. Great player to watch
Awesome game to watch on TV. College deserved a closer scoreline for the way they challenged Grey but then again the counterattacking involving great passing against an unstructured defence was totally in character with what Grey are outstanding at doing.
