Hilton prepares to host Michaelhouse in their final game of the season on Saturday 28 June 2014. This is traditionally the best attended KZN inter-schools match of the rugby season.
My feeling is that Michaelhouse will coast to victory in this game but earlier this year I have been cautioned never to underestimate the underdog at this popular derby. …

The latest media article on KZN school rugby recruitment appeared in the 22 June edition of the Sunday Tribune. There basically wasn’t anything new to offer on a topic that unfortunately is going to eventually lose it’s buzz the more often it gets reported on in the mainstream media. Probably the most interesting bit of information to take out of the report is that the KZN High School Rugby Association and all their affliliate schools will be formulating policy to guide rugby recruitment. It goes on to describe this as a positive attempt by rugby-playing schools to eliminate unfair practices. …
In the past there have been rewards for provincial players that performed well at the under-18 Academy but in 2013 those opportunities seemed to have dried up completely. However news is that like in 2012, SA Schools trials will once again take place in Kempton Park on the first weekend after schools reopen : 26-27 July 2014. If the SA Schools organisers decide to adopt the same criteria as they did in 2012, it means the door will be open for Academy Week players to be chosen for SA Schools.…

With Queen’s a little off the pace in 2014, it’s been left to regional powerhouses Selborne and Dale to battle it out for the Border title in 2014. Selborne will be the favourites but Dale can’t be underestimated. The boys from King put up a huge challenge against a good Grey High 1st XV in Port Elizabeth a fortnight ago.…
Westville and Martzburg College meet on Saturday in what is building up to be a cracker of a game. There isn’t much separating the two schools on the BHP Top 50 national rankings and this closeness between the two is expected to translate into a tightly contested game. …

The semi-finalists in the Golden Lions’ league for large schools have been determined after the weekends’ matches. The teams who finished in the top 3 positions on the log will go through with Helpmekaar College, who goes through as the top team. This is by agreement with the other schools and the union. This means that the teams who finished first and second will play against each other and Helpmekaar will play against the team who finished in third position on the log.…
Formula driven rankings compiled by BoishaaiPa: “I am tweaking my formulas a bit to get a better result on real strength. I am looking to give teams that play quality opposition, but lose with close margins more bonuspoints. This will ensure that teams we know are strong, but have lost a few due to the strong opposition they have played don’t dwell down inbetween 40 and 50″…

Kingswood and St Andrews once again served up a thriller on City Lords in their annual derby match. Both sides committed themselves to playing positive, attacking rugby, and this resulted in a match that was full of thrilling moments. In a game very much of two halves, ultimately it was College who won the match, 42-28. However this score line did not truly reflect the events on the field.…

The KwaZulu-Natal high school provincial youth week teams completed a clean sweep against their Pumas counterparts in Vryheid on Monday, 16 June. The KZN under-18 Craven Week team arrived in Northern Natal minus the services of several first choice players and included a few players who had been ruled out of Saturday’s KZN interschools fixtures for various reasons. In spite of the disruptions they were able to claim a convincing 27-7 victory.…

The path for Paul Roos’ victory against Paarl Boys High in the top of the WPPL table clash was paved by the boys putting in the hard work on the training ground beforehand and delivering the goods when it mattered most during the match. At the same time Paul Roos rugby mentor Brendan Venter has to be commended for doing his bit to improve the team’s chances of success. …
The Kearsney-Michaelhouse inter-schools was scheduled to take place at Michaelhouse this year in accordance with the normal venue rotation. Michaelhouse then agreed to allow Kearsney to be hosts, which provided Kearsney with a suitable date for their Old Boys Day. In the long run the switch will be of benefit to both schools as it evens up their home and away games against the other current KZN tier-1 heavyweights. …
