MC U14 – It would seem that MC’s RBT are asleep at U13 level (that is if you want to play the hire fire rent and tag and release game) and are reliant on the Bulls scouts throwing them deals at U15/16 level. They were given the heads up for the North Coast kid before he made CW, after he made CW and weren’t interested, so the head of GW stepped in, met the parent and offered a GW scholarship, which was accepted. Once the player was named captain the MC RBT then got on the blower and after multiple calls, got barred by the parent, or so the legend goes. Then his 3 school and CW team mates also got the nod from GW. Then a talented kid from a burra school got the academic scholarship to a private, but once he made the CW side the MC RBT again got onto the blower and offered a scholarship to him and his brother. The horse had bolted. No problem if you don’t want to play in the hire fire rent tag and release game, but then don’t. If you do want to, the RBT will need to up their game.

@TIGER_1: I watched that Under16A game at Westville, very even. At Glenwood it might have been a win. College really should have beaten Glenwood at Glenwood, they were the better side on the day. Glenwood used their 2nd get of jail card on that day…

@beet: I was not surprised at all. There are some really talented youngsters in this group and if it not for some inflated egos during the first part of the season, I wouldn’t have been surprised if they did go unbeaten this year. College took that record from them last year and we have waited a year to set the record straight.

When one compares like for like fixtures and the scores between the teams, you will see that the top team was going to be decided between Westville, College and Glenwood. Just for the record, Westville also drew with Glenwood but were leading 13 – 8 when a dropped pass in the in-goal area resulted in a 5 yard scrum and the rest they say is history.

I know one of the parents of a College u16 A player and they confirmed that only their loose head prop, King and first Centre Duma were out because of injury. Westville can also lay claim to a few injuries currently but we will not bring this into the equation. Credit needs to be given were credit is due. These boys had a point to prove and they did it emphatically!

Dean Carelse has done a phenomenal job with the Team and we certainly hope that he stays on at Westville with the increased responsibility he deserves.

@beet: The individual you mention has also been identified by the referees society as punching way above his weight. With no formal referee training his performance is right up there. Hopefully he will complete the formal training and join our ranks where he will likely go very far. But if coaching is his passion then there will probably not be time for both…..

@star: I was very surprised by the u16 result. I expected the game to be a lot closer. I’d watched College play against Glenwood on Dixon’s and almost beat them – Glenwood scored a last minute try to earn a draw.

I later learned that 6 College players were either sick or injured for the Westville game. I’m not sure how true this is but it may have played a part in the outcome.

Nevertheless an outstanding result for Westville and a feather in the cap of new coach Dean Carelse, with talk amongst a few at Westville linking him with more responsibility down the line.

@beet: No, I don’t think they are any different to past intakes. I think the current Open team was just good all the way through. They will be fine – the curren tU15’s and U16’s had average starts as well.

@ Beet- actually the current Westville U16s lost to College in U14 and U15 but had a good win on the weekend. Actually for those in the know it was not the surprize some people might think it was . I had a friendly bet with such a person who predicted a 20 point margin. It ended up at 17 and I was sweating a bit towards the end there.

@Gungets Tuft: Is this issue with the College u14s a trend that’s played itself out in their rugby results over the years ie u16 results a lot closer than results from when the teams were u14?

Otherwise it may just be that Glenwood and Westville got the bigger/better u14 players this year? Meaning this could be a weaker age group for College from now until they matriculate in 2018?

@Gungets Tuft: I think the U14A squads at Glenwood and Westville start pre-season training in the first week of January (before the boys have even stepped into a classroom) whereas College focuses on the summer sports – cricket and aquatics – with rugby only starting towards then end of Term 1. Maybe that has something to do with it – not sure.

@All Black: I didn’t see the article but I’ll look for it later. Not sure what the topic was but I’ve long said that the game has become over-legislated. When I played there was no such thing as ‘roll away’ or ‘hands in the ruck’ etc – those issues were self-regulating if you know what I mean…..  Norman Toerien handled the game very well I thought and I agree with you and said it further up the thread – the only inconsistency I thought was that if Stuart copped a yellow then Meilon should have as well. Loosies – eish. They have to just learn to play the ref of the day. Some go to the whistle quicker than others – Tharrat and Le Roux love the breakdown, it’s where they thrive so it must be frustrating for them when they aren’t allowed to do their thing. They must have loved the ref at Michaelhouse though…….

@ GB- the showboating story always reminds me of the Robbie Fleck episode and I break out every time. I totally agree with you and All Black on the pleasant and respectful day out. Must have something to do with the quality of College parent, Almost up there with PBHS who are almost too genteel that you find yourself shouting for them. The moment for me was when my boy was hit accidentally in the proverbial and a College boy came to his aid with the words” Come on M.. you are having a good game so get up”. Fantastic. I know I am going to get into trouble here but I found the most tense and aggressive vibe was when we played KES. Maybe I was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.

@GreenBlooded: Agreed. Did you see the article in the Tribune about laws? Was interesting. Saturday was fine. Thought Goodson being cleaned out was exactly the same as Stuart cleaning out but one got a yellow and the other nothing. Was strict on our two fetchers who were all over the ball at the breakdown. Took momentum away but he was consistent. didn’t help our strength though.

@Gungets Tuft: I agree to a point, Glenwood also getting a real mix of boys these days especially in the BE, maybe Afrikaans being the settler, hahah! High school is an adjustment for all the boys, so Under14 results can be erratic, sublime one week to hopeless the next. I don’t really look much into Under14A and Under15A results too much, but from Under16A one can then start to access how good the group really is. My experience went from getting whipped in 2nd form to being equal if not better than some schools by 4th form…….your August schedule looks like Glenwood’s very tough indeed. Those lower sides are going to need to put in some hard work in the holidays…

@GreenBlooded: I have thought about the slow start for the U14’s, tried to figure out why. I think it has a lot to do with the kids all coming from far and wide, no more that 2 or 3 kids that have ever played together, whereas the Durban schools have their feeders closer to them, so possibly have more kids that have played together at primary school. Not sure if that is the case.

Then the obvious, the A team mostly boarders and still settling in, but you would expect by term 2 that they would be settled. That all said, the College U14A have not had a shabby year. Big loss to Glenwood, would like to see the Glenwood U14A results over all, narrow loss away to KES (13-14), and now to Westville. It’s not a poor year, even if the boys would have set their sights much higher than that.

Some seriously character building weeks coming up, PBHS away, Glenwood home, Affies home and Grey Bloem away. Definitely going to put some hair on their chests.

One of that guys mates was trying to get a reaction from the College boys on the bench behind the poles during the 1st team game. Beer in hand and chanting some strange stuff. A Westville supporter told him to sit down and shut up. Quite frankly it was a good day and everybody just seemed to get along and enjoy the rugby, hockey etc. Cant let a few idiots ruin a pleasant day of schoolboy rugby.

@star: Of course they would never take matters into their own hands – but there should be action taken by the host school. They must know who the idiot was. Lay a charge against him. I recall an incident at Glenwood where an old boy ran on and tackled an opposition player. He was promptly put into a head-lock by none other than Ed Hill (a monster of a teacher) and frog marched to the gate. I think there were also charges laid. It is completely unacceptable.

Love the story about the show-boater being tackled. Seen it quite a few times and have to say – nothing gives me more pleasure. It’s sort of like when the Matador gets the wrong end of the bull. An EPIC FAIL as my kids would say……

@GB- I would not have felt sorry for him either and would not have blamed the College 15 if they had taken matters into their own hands. Great composure was shown in a highly charged situation. I suppose that is one of the reasons for the new liquor laws being introduced but I think they have missed the mark. The young man ( that I did not see as I was on the other side of the tunnel) had obviously been drinking since early morning. It is not about location but rather trading hours that must be dealt with. You are a ref that talks about the clear and obvious. Statistics can sometime be interpreted on this basis. Earlier this year I am on record as cautioning the Kearsney set-up on the results against Westville. The negative points differential had more than doubled in the space of 2 years and 2 open teams had been lost. The response was that Westville had lost all the A team games. I smiled as that was very superficial( a kick missed in front of the posts to lose by 3 points for the U14s and both the U15As and Ists lost in the last move by a few points though an inability to close the game down) . These issues could easily be remedied and they were cumulating in their finest overall performance against College. How did Kearsney end their season? ( and I am not just talking about the record Ist team score) Kearsney only put out 5 open teams and the 5th team lost to GW 7ths by over 50. This is not an attack on Kearsney. I am just calling the clear and obvious. Interestingly when looking at College’s performance against GW it was the U14s that contributed over 150 points to the negative differential. That means that College were in the positive for the U15/U16 and Opens. Gungets has mentioned before that it takes time for the U14 boarders to find their feet. Maybe something to look at.

@Westers: Didn’t see the tackle, having those two fields next to each other is ADHD hell, it was exhausting, spinning around following spectator noise. Invariably I missed what caused the noise. Seems to me that the Matric team is about being over the top anyway, the okes seem the be having the jol of their lives. Maybe everyone could take a lesson about having some fun.

@Gungets Tuft: I can’t say for sure but I know there are a couple who sometimes play for the 6th side as well as the Matric team and they were told they had to make a choice on Saturday. They couldn’t play for 2 teams. I can’t say for sure though that boys did not play two games.

By the way, well done to the College boy who tackled the Westville showboater before he could dot down. 15 out of 10 tackle.

Did you see the shirtless knuckle-dragger old-boy who had obviously spent the morning at Waxy’s and thought it was a good idea to shoulder charge one of the College players as he was leaving the field after the mile-long tunnel? @star: well done Westville, showing good depth. The Glenwood open teams this year were weaker than usual, hence losing many from 5th’s to 8ths, that is where College and Westville won most of their games. Well done Westville 2nds too, finally beating the Glenwood 2nds who were unbeaten locally for.about 3 years. 2015 could be Westville’s year, with a young 2nd team…

What a great day of sport and the OBs are very proud of the performances of all the teams/participants. I think that this is the first time in Westville’s history that they have won more matches than they have lost against College ( Played 23 won 15 lost 6 Drew 2. Points for 516 against 306). As a point of reference College’s results against GW were played 25 won 10 lost 12 drew 3. Points for 421 against 472. As College played both games away with no staggers and always give 110 % they are very good from a form line perspective. College’s negative points differential against GW was 2 per game which is more than acceptable playing at GW. Against Westville it is 9 points per game.ie more than 4 X that of GW( for some context.) So again well done for a great overall performance. Well done also to the fighting fourths and the excellent 8ths for going through the season unbeaten and to the young 2nds( 4 matrics) for losing only one game. Credit must also go to the U16As who grew in stature from an indifferent start to be a national powerhouse. You emphatically beat an excellent team to conclude your season. It is just a pity that the provincial selectors again seem to continually ignore what is happening on the ground. Here is hoping the penny drops at some point.

During the Westville vs Kearsney 1st XV match of 1991 which Westville regrettably won 16-12, come halftime Seabass calls Rhino from the stand and instructs him to go fetch his tent and sleeping bag out of the car parked on Jan Hofmeyr Drive. Reason for the request: Seabass was enjoying camping offsides so much during that game!*

@Anti Green: It was more like an extended halftime break than a red card and in Rhino’s case probably the equivalent of spending the night in jail due to failing a breathalyser test.

@GreenBlooded: I know that, we are talking about players. What about Raymond Collyer from College. Nigel Williamson from MHS 3 years MHS 1st team.
Seabass was it Andre Fitt from Westville. Then the one and only Hentie Maartens what a talent. 1990 beat MHS on his own.

@Anti Green: Senekal was not a loosie – he was a 10/12. Great player though. Others in the era were Trevor Labuschagne (our “Stransky” drop goaler to beat College in ’86), Wayne Barr, Dennis “Tubby” Richards and Ian Longden.

@GreenBlooded: I have a few from my era, Luke Lotriet from College, immense. For Glenwood, David Terblanche in 1992 (KZN Schools No 8 & Captain) & Malcolm Aerington (1997) and Nic Strauss (1997). Malcolm was a Pinetown boy and joined Glenwood as a post matric, he was a machine ran over players. As I have mentioned before to me Nico Breedt from Kearsney was the best I have ever seen…..

@GreenBlooded: Pleased to say I’m moving him next year. Anti Green is against all things healthy told you this before. First sensible thing you have blogged, Warren Groupe was the best flank in KZN ever. The oke could change a game all on his own. Peter Senekal is another that comes to mind.

@Anti Green: Like I said – each case on it’s merits. I don’t know what happened in either case besides what I’ve heard hear. Did you see the incident against NW or are you just going on hearsay? Perhaps video evidence was reviewed, witnesses were called and it was decided that the on-field decision was enough, the was severe provocation, the on-field red was too harsh. Who knows. I won’t pretend to because the only knowledge I have of the incident was the report of one blogger who is partisan. Try to look at things objectively – don’t let your ‘Anti-Green’ agenda blind you.

You had a son at GW??? And you call yourself Anti-Green? What did they do to the poor lad?

@seabass: I’ll kick it off!! The most talented loosie I ever saw in my days at Glenwood was a chap by the name of Warren Groupe. I think he made Natal Schools in 1988. He was one of the few players to skip the U15 age group and go straight from U14 to 1st team (remember in those days the age groups were U13, U14 and U15). He was fearless and could read the game like a pro, always turning up at the right place at the right time. He was simply quite incredible to watch. Sadly, his personal circumstances didn’t allow him to pursue much after school which was a great pity – I think he could have ended up playing for Natal.

@Buffel: Sensible comments as always – I will respectfully differ from your Top 5 based on the games I’ve watched this season – excluding the festivals:

    1. Glenwood by a long shot
    2. College (based on the marginal win over House)
    3. House (seems like they got a decent fight from St Charles yesterday)
    4. Ville
    5. Kearsney (they would be my 4 were it not for yesterdays result)

@Anti Green: I’m not sure where you get the idea from that a red card = 2 week suspension. It is not the case. You seem to have a club rugby background so I would expect you to know that each case is treated on it’s merits – which is why the naughty boys troop down to Kings Park for a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday evenings with uncle Dekker. By the comments of some of your mates I guess you have been to a few yourself?

It is no different with schoolboys – each case is treated on it’s merits and each school has it’s own policy. There have been many cases when the on-field sanction have been deemed ‘enough punishment’ – the incident involving the College boy in the famous 44-40 fixture last year being one that springs to mind.

So if ‘due process was followed’ then that is what it means. We don’t need people to second guess it and invent standards to support their ‘anti-green’ agendas……

It has been fun. Thanks guys for the season- just a pity that the last couple of games involving KC have been so lopsided.
It is now to Craven week and honestly if the boys play like the Glenwood side did yesterday, they will come close to being crowned unofficial champions. My boy came through relatively unscathed this season baring a torn ear incident that has left its mark of a tough but rewarding 2014 and to play with and against his mates is what it is all about.

To Rhino- your personal rants on the Glenwood guys is so over the top that you should be removed from the blog , never to return. Go and find another medium to sprout your absolute drivel.

This is my top 5 for KZN this season

    1-GLENWOOD
    2-MHS
    3-COLLEGE
    4-WESTVILLE
    5-KEARSNEY

We did beat Westville and College beat MHS but having played against MHS and now Glenwood over these past 2 Saturdays, there is no question that they are 1 and 2 for 2014. If KC had been more competitive over this 8 day period then I would have them at 4 and Westville at 5.

I’m not sure how to handle the drug thing but in the absence of facts, maybe even if we do have the facts, we could end up destroying a career maybe even a life if we don’t exercise a degree of responsibility here. So please try to avoid specific references re: drug related issues. As a general topic by all means fire away with what you have to say.

I might have explained to you in an email before, part of the content for this blog which readers find informative is acquired with the assistance of the schools themselves so if it turns into a parasitic relationship where I take but can’t give anything of value back, it serves them no purpose to help and then there the blog will become pretty lame.

@beet: Maybe the decision not to kick for goal was based on the form of their kicker? Westville have battled with kicking for goal the entire season. Yes – Westville left a win out there – but so did College. I don’t think either team arrived with their A game today. Both team made far too many basic errors and quite a few simple finishes came to nothing. Both kickers battled – even missing some sitters.

To broaden what I have just alluded to on finishing – one thing that has frustrate the bejesus out of me this season – at all levels of SBR – is the inability of teams to make the correct ‘finishing’ decisions. How often have I seen a great try go begging because the ball carrier elects to cut inside or take the ball into contact than a simple pass to the outside runner – sometimes with a clear line and a 3 man overlap. I saw heaps of that again at Westville today – across the age-groups.

I must say today from what I witnessed Westville 1st XV should be crying tonight. In the context of the season, its an honour to hold this College team to a draw but based on 70 minutes of action Westville left a win out there on the field. So many nearly chances that they could not convert and a bad decision not to kick an easy one for goal with 15 min left on the clock. If they had slotted that one, another kick from one of their many redzone penalties at the end would have wrapped up the game.

Like someone said College is capable of playing much better rugby but in the same vein WBHS must surely be capable of better finishing than they showed today.

@GreenBlooded: Reliably informed that said player worth 74 points today. Conclusion: Kearsney would have won the game.

Jokes! Due process was followed and explained to me online.

Tough going for Kearsney. I didn’t see this one coming. I expected Glenwood to be foot off the pedal once they secured the game, given the number of injuries they had in the weeks leading up to this game. I guess after losing to Kearsney for the last 2 seasons, Glenwood wanted to leave nothing to chance plus leave an even long lasting memory.

IMO – Undisputed No.1 in KZN for 2014 is Glenwood.

No.2 is very close , IMO MHS at 2 and College at 3

Craven week selections looking spot on , well done to the KZN SBR team.

I’m certainly not obsessed, the headmaster and coach don’t like me at all for challenging them on recruitment etc. I’ve actually watched both sides and Westville would battle against Glenwood at Glenwood, as that is where the next fixture would need to be played if they played twice.

Just got home from UKZN….. Glenwood v Kearsney was a massacre! Much as the kid probably wanted to play. Tedder should never have taken the field. The Kearsney backs where outgunned. Hall tried manfully with some massive clearance box kicks, but the chase was poor which allowed the Glenwood backs too much space.

How Evans is not in the AW team baffles me, he won our and their line out ball playing against Ndlovo. MOM was Vosloo once again, he scored two great tries to take his season’s tally to 13. Well done to Tristan if he does! Sparks got his 50th vs College a few weeks back, but he is older. Not sure what the Glenwood record is, probably 50 odd, but these days with 20 odd games a season 50 is much easier to get. However to stay injury free in much tougher games is a great achievement! Pre semi professionalism I would guess Greg Manning would have had the most caps at Glenwood. One of the Halsteads must have had the Kearsney record or Nico Breedt maybe…

@Greenwood: Thanks – St Charles is spending millions on a new Rugby facility with earthworks well on the way- it is expected to finished before next season- hopefully with this facility, we can attract more quality players in the future and be in a place where we can compete against the schools on our fixture list. Our hockey, i believe is already doing this, and is going from strength to strength with us only losing to College and Glenwood this season.
Watch this space as they say…. in couple of years we might even have fixtures against college rugby

Saints – no doom and gloom here -House gave Glenwood a torrid time
at Gwd – we nearly lost that one – with all respect to St Charles I can see them on the comeback trail and I hope they get stronger as time goes by
    – hopefully we will play them in the near future, maybe some staggered games and it would be great to have the Saints back in the Mix – Looking back at what House did to Kearsney last weekend I think it will be a long afternoon for St Charles , but all the best for your teams

Hopefully this team sheet – reflects who is actually going to play and hopefully the position that they are going to play in. This is the team that started the season with some decent results, but due to injuries have not be able to play as a full strength side. Blake Mingay at centre could be problem to whoever he comes up against, he just needs a little space and the ball. Hopefully the Glenwood doom and gloom boys are wrong about their 80 – 0 prediction. :-D That said what ever the scoreline there will definitely be lots of support. The hockey should be a cracker after their first game ended in a 2 all draw.

@ Buffel- I hate to say this but K could be shipped by more than 20. I am also not sure why Westville have made 3 positional changes to the backline which was starting to find some fluidity. The CW centre moves to wing , the wing(Ball) moves to centre(13) and the outside centre (Anderson) moves to 12.
Maybe Guma is perceived to be too big a threat. Maybe as Ball is back next year( and Westville will have a dearth of wings) they want to see how he performs there. Still pretty risky but I suppose that is the downside to reward.
