Selborne vs Dale

With Queen’s a little off the pace in 2014, it’s been left to regional powerhouses Selborne and Dale to battle it out for the Border title in 2014. Selborne will be the favourites but Dale can’t be underestimated. The boys from King put up a huge challenge against a good Grey High 1st XV in Port Elizabeth a fortnight ago.

@Knight_CHS07: I here the Selborne team will be called the Selborne Collegians. They will have 4 first team players in the squad. The rest of the team will be made up of mostly 2nd team and a few 3rd team players. Two of the 4 only started playing 1st team after the Grey Bloem game and the other 2 are in due to two of the 2nd team boys unable to play during this holiday. Still think they will be competitive and looking forward to some nice rugby. Think the Grens vs Nico Malan will be a good game.

@Playa: I heard the Selborne 2nd team coach are going to try and field a team as close to the one that played against Grey Bloem. No Selborne CW players playing and Academy side has a rugby camp at the same time as tournament. It will still be a competitive side. I heard Grens will play all their CW players due to lack of game time. They had their last game against Selborne 2 weeks ago.

Selborne and Dale has 6 each in CW side.

@BoishaaiPa: Haha great story BHP. Sounds like my school sport experiences at the hands of Maritzburg College. Fortunately I have one memorable 4th team cricket win to fall back on and it was achieved on a College field as well – not Goldstones but same kind of grass, soil, crazy hot summer conditions. The pitch was more than likely prepared by the same groundsman :)

The academy side was also announced yesterday. I just know who the Selborne, Grens and some of the Dale boys are who made the team. I think the Cambridge no8 made the academy side but I think he is good enough to be in the CW side.

I might have the CW and Academy teams by tomorrow. I will send it to beat asap for him to post.

Credit to Dale who never gave up. A typical Selborne Dale derby. I had a chat to the dale boys yesterday at the Border practice. They are taking the loss like a man with no excuses.

Battered and broozed bodies on both sides.

Griffy did his homework and made sure Dale try and cut off Morgan from the rest of the backline. Dale defended well but one could see the tables turning in the second half when the Selborne forwards dominated.

Think it will be much closer and tougher next month in KWT.

This Selborne team is something else. Dale matched them in the first half and it seemed as if it was going to be a low scoring game. Morgan Steyn was impressive as usual, that boy converted a 52m penalty  goodness!!!

I was very impressed by the performance of both teams, Dale didn’t make it easy, not one bit. They (Dale) impressed me with their tackling, and defence. Selborne was just persistant…and we all know the outcome of persistance  and eventually broke the Dalian defence.

I must say I really enjoy the way the Selborne 10 & 12 inject pace for the running game on attack – the 10 really sets the tone here but both boys show a good appreciation of being able to offload accurately at high speed. I think the 13 is a bit underrated as well. At KERF I watched him making some very good tackles – he is definitely not shy to lead with his head and shoulder in contact situations.

Dale has heart and I admire that about them, all they need to do is go out there and play…that’s it…PLAY! If they play their natural game they will cause a lot of problems, just like they did on the “Matress” .

But then again, Selborne won’t make it easy for them…no sir they won’t. The Selborne team(1st XV), know that this is their year to dominate the EC once again, and will use this game to send a message to Queen’s and GreyPE.

All the best to the boys tomorrow, and may the better team win

@Knight_CHS07: I watched the game in KWT last year. Dale was tactically dumb, and I agree, they needed Griffy’s brains for that game as well. They should have won. The only tactic they got right was sterilising Gosa. Selborne, also tactically dumb, just kept on making Gosa play all the rugby. The winner was decided when Selborne decided not to involve him, and Dale were left clueless. Painful match to watch.

Dale almost made a similar error against Queens this year by focusing on Jerry Danquah…they fortunately woke up early on…then lost it again…and thank goodness for forward passes we sneaked through

@Mike: @QC86: Dale’s forwards have stood their own ground this year, small as they are. But Mike’s got a point, should Selborne dominate upfront, those backs will humiliate ours…for a change Selborne has an effective backline beyond number 10.If the forwards match each other…the backline battle will be made of awesomeness!Admittedly, Selborne have the upper hand, but if heart has ever been important for Dale, tomorrow is where it will matter most.

@QC86: No not that kind of rugby, I agree, Selborne rugby has progressed massively this year. What I mean is that Selborne are physically a big side and they will use that from the forwards to the backs. Dale have to be careful at ruck time. If they don’t get stuck in physically they’ll be in for a long day.

@Mike: Selborne aren’t playing that type of dumb rugby this year, new ass coach has opened a new book, old channel one ball thankfully something of the past ,but it will still be a massive game and i think it could go either way,if the game was been played in King tomorrow i would be very afraid.

Think Selborne will try bully the Dale team and it might be effective but if Dale have most of the ball possession things could get very interesting.

@Playa: I was expecting the “My year” part LOL. WOW! The competition is tight, Dale is no pushover i’ll tell you that.

I think if Griffy was incharge last year, Dale would’ve had a double over SC. The 2013 Dale team, had a rough season but when they played SC in East London…they played as a unit. It was a 50/50 game, no one could’ve predicted the end result.

@QC86: @Knight_CHS07: Agree with with you both. This game has the makings of a real cracker and Dale have a chance. Have seen both sides play this year and both have impressed. Lately though, Selborne seem to have reached another gear altogether.

@Playa: I agree with you 100% on “unpredictability “. The last time Selborne played Dale the match ended with 2 or 3 points being the difference between the two teams.

I expect nothing less than 100% perfomance from both schools in all the teams. Rugby will again prove to be the winner on the day  .

@QC86: Haven’t seen this team play, but from what I hear, they are the closest thing to the 1998 team…which is dangerous. The beauty of a derby is the unpredictability of a winner.

The one thing you guys are all missing is that this bunch of boys are not like the Selborne boys of the past. There are no issues with this group, they play as one ,are very positive, none of the old biceps before points mentality of past teams,i can assure you they will not take Dale lightly, that said all Selborne teams never seem to play well against Dale.

Selborne should take this, but if they dont give 100% Dale will make them pay.
