No smoke, no fire regarding canned Glenwood – Maritzburg College return game in 2015
Glenwood and Maritzburg College will only have one proper inter-schools rugby day in 2015. The return match which has been a fixture on the KZN school rugby calendar for ages has been scrapped. In the same 2015 season, Maritzburg College will break ground by playing Westville in proper home and away inter-schools fixtures for the very first time.
Maritzburg College has indicated that their decision regarding Glenwood was nothing more than a matter of logistics:…
NWU-Puk under 19 contracted players for 2015
The Leopards have been very competitive at under-19 level over the years and its no longer that big a surprise when they beat one of the big unions during the junior Currie Cup, simply because they have good coaching, good facilities and they attract many talented players their way. This annual prosperity would not been possible if it were not for the close working relationship that the union has with the North-West University or Pukke as they are so often called.…

IRB clarifies laws regarding “crocodile rolls” & other aspects
Initiated by Greenblooded
During the course of the year the IRB is called on to clarify grey areas of the law book. Below are a few of the interesting issues that have arisen in 2014.
The first ties in nicely with the “crocodile roll” (many names to define this), an increasingly popular method whereby a support player deals with a so called “jackal” from the defending team who’s already into a very low position over a tackled player and about to attempt a turnover, by gripping the “jackal” around his upper-body and rolling him over to the side. Here’s a short Youtube video of the technique: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yzge8Hs1TN8.

KZN schoolboy rugby players that became Springboks
KwaZulu-Natal is very passionate about schoolboy rugby. For decades school rugby in the region has been well organised, had good infrastructure and enjoyed a very strong support base. Many, many good rugby players have been produced by a number of schools in the province. However very few of these talented players have gone on to play for the Springboks. The truth is that as much as KZN loves their rugby and as big a part as the region plays in the overall well-being of the sport in this country, the province’s schools only account for just over 6% of the players that have represented South Africa on the international stage.…
Sharks under 19 contracted players for 2015
Sharks CEO John Smit has changed a number of things during his first year in charge at Kings Park but one that looks likely to stay the same is the union’s approach to contracting junior players. Only 12 junior contracts for 2015 have been awarded. 11 to schoolboys with the other going to current Sharks under-19 starter Chris Lines who is still under-18 this year. …

Michaelhouse well represented in Currie Cup Final 2014
The analysis below was forwarded to blogger Steve. It’s of the schools of origin of the players in Saturdays Currie Cup final per SARFU’s data. As always it makes for interesting reading in terms of some of the “smaller” rugby schools contribution to SA rugby and certainly from a Michaelhouse perspective 5 players is a first (there were 4 in the 2011 final at Ellis Park which was unprecedented at the time). 24 out of 44!…
A new over-age player at Glenwood allegation
The Sunday Times article of 19 October 2014 entitled “School rugby in crisis as hulks loom over lads” had a subheading: “Allegations that team is using an over-aged boy” which refers to a Glenwood 1st XV rugby player of 2014. …
St Andrew’s loss is Graeme College’s gain
St Andrew’s College of Grahamstown is in the process of finding a new Director of Rugby. The reason for this is that Old Selbornian Allan Miles, their head of rugby for the past five seasons has decided not to renew his contract. He will instead be follow a different career path by take up a full-time teaching post and senior housemaster position at neighbouring Graeme College, starting in 2015.…
SA Schools to senior cricket conversion rate (1994-2010)
A concerned parent forwarded this.
Using the SA Schools cricket team by year lists available on the website www.SchoolSportsNews.co.za, he was able to identify that between the 1994 team containing legendary wicketkeeper Mark Boucher and the 2010 team which capped the rising international star Quinton de Kock, 79 out of 243 listed places belonged to players who went on to make it to senior cricket level. That’s just a shade under 33% or 1 out of every 3.…

Stefan Terblanche to host “Great Debate” at Maritzburg College
The SchoolboyRugby Blog had the honour of Stefan Terblanche doing some free publicity work for the website via twitter recent. But before anyone gets overexcited that Stefan’s now taking a greater interest in school rugby its worth mentioning that he is hosting a Gala Debate Evening at Maritzburg College on 01 October, so his tweets are probably just amounted to a bit of self-promotion more than anything else (not that I’m unhappy about it

Sharks u19 vs EP u19: do or die time!
The Sharks and Eastern Province under-19 teams clash in a must win round-robin match at Kings Park on Saturday, 27 September 2014 (09h30). Along with the Golden Lions, the the three teams find themselves battling it out for the last remaining semifinal spot in this year ABSA under-19 competition. The Lions have a bye this weekend but appear to have a slightly easier finish after that, so defeat for either of the other two will probably spell the end of their hopes of making the playoffs. …
