Stefan Terblanche to host “Great Debate” at Maritzburg College

The SchoolboyRugby Blog had the honour of Stefan Terblanche doing some free publicity work for the website via twitter recent. But before anyone gets overexcited that Stefan’s now taking a greater interest in school rugby its worth mentioning that he is hosting a Gala Debate Evening at Maritzburg College on 01 October, so his tweets are probably just amounted to a bit of self-promotion more than anything else (not that I’m unhappy about it :) )

Here is a link to the event pamphlet (click here)

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting both Stefan and Jacques Botes at a KZN Craven Week function a few years ago. Both are super guys. The Craven Week youngsters really looked up to them and listened carefully to the meaningful advice they had to pass on. They were also very witty so it was very entertaining session.

With Jacques Botes set to take over in the role of recruiter for the Sharks once he retires from pro rugby later this year, it’s a great opportunity for those in attendance to get to hear his thoughts on the issues surrounding school rugby. He will play a hands on role in SBR from next season and I’m sure he’s been doing his homework.

Getting the truth out of rugby union aligned ex-players turned employees might not be that easy though. The rugby union has a set of objectives totally different from those of most schools. For the RU a win at all costs ethos prevails. At pro level rugby has to take first place above all else on the work priority list. Recruiting the best available players at all levels is a key objective. For the many junior players that start off on the road to the top, something resembling a dog eat dog culture exists. For every one player that eventually makes it, there are probably 20 or more other hopefuls fall by the wayside. More than anything else, rugby unions would love schools to buy into their way of thinking and doing business, as this would make their work a lot easier.

So if Kings Park and the Sharks Academy starts sounding like utopia along the way, people in attendance be warned, the guests have probably veered off the truth and reality path a bit, turning a debate evening into more of a marketing pitch. This is not to say that Kings Park and the Sharks Academy isn’t good places.

The best thing College folks could get out of this evening is the no holds barred truth. For that to happen it might require Botes and/or Terblanche to be the bad guys. I’m not sure either one of them are prepared to take on that role.

Butch James will also be there. In his short, soon to end time of working as the Sharks recruiter, he hasn’t exactly impressed and the opinions of him amongst experienced people in the industry have been pretty adverse to say the least. Quite a few actually share the view that he only got the job in the first place because he’s mates with Sharks CEO John Smit. So here’s a chance for Butch to shine. He’s got absolutely nothing to lose! Some refreshing honesty about his experience this season could really light things up and set up a memorable great debate.

The topics for discussion again:
1. The current state of school rugby competitiveness, old vs new coaching and training approaches
2. Bursaries, recruitment, the involvement of Rugby Unions in getting players to certain schools.
3. Professional sports – pros vs cons
4. Performance enhancing products at school level
5. The importance of school sports – is it still serving the right purpose?
6. Do we put too much emphasis on results at school level?

need to say , he isn’t the most loyal, this youtube and there is a number 2 as well , wasn’t a particular fan of his, didn’t think such a great rugby player, agree not the type you want your son to be mates with or your daughter to be with, for sure, as for a polo player, he just happened to be slightly bigger than most at school, played hole man, but don’t think you will see him after school to be honest and has been out fo school, going into 3rd year next year , hear he is a car salesman , go figure

@ Grassy- did you notice that 2 GW boys ( Bossr and Cele) have been selected for both the U17 and U19 teams. Bossr is also an U16 boy. I also can’t believe that one age group has 8 players from one school. I would not mind if that team had dominated through the age groups or now at open level is achieving the expected results but is has not. GW lost recently to MHS who not even top 2 in the Midlands( KZN- Inland). I won’t bring up the KES result  I believe that the side was picked on Saturday morning before a single ball was bowled in the trials. I have already blogged that Westville beat GW in all the A team hockey games and both the Ist and U16A ended up rated among the top teams in the country and yet they did not have the most coastal reps . Not even second. It is not only in rugby that selections are a dog and pony show and why GW receive the response they do. If you want to push boundaries at every possible turn then be man enough to accept what will get thrown back at you.

The boy should be suspended for a few games if it was a blatant punch, but this could happen anywhere…..don’t come and make up the Glenwood boys are ill disciplined. @Roger: Funny you say that spoke to Steve La Marque(head of GW polo and GM of SA polo) at the tournament he is desperate to get an invite to the KES polo tournament. He had a meeting with Lovatt at the beginning of the year and TK has been trying to convince Lovatt to no avail. As I understand it Cliffton won’t invite GW to their tournament either. So they only attend THE SACS tournament which we should be attending again soon.

@Grasshopper: Morning, I know I was at the game my boy played in the U16 Tournament. KES lost 5-2 we had 3 U14 boys playing and 8 U15 boys our U16 age group is very weak. 3 of the boys in the GW side were KES boys we also lost 1 to St John’s and 2 to Bennies. So had to send a development side, but that being said the boys did well. GW number 5 is brilliant pity about the GW number 2 punching one of the young boys and being red carded, left a bad taste.

Hey no excuses the better side on the day won, but comforting to know that the whole KES team will be back next year and some the year after.

@Gungets Tuft: I know it’s a national joke with Glenwood competitors about the ‘Academy of Excellence’, it’s just a name for a structured programme that virtually all schools have in place now. Andile is a one in a kind sort of sportsman, an Errol Stewart, Herschelle Gibbs, Jonty Rhodes type of sportsman……SA Schools cricket & hockey is rare. Greg Nicol was the last at Glenwood to get close to that, he was picked for both but had to choose one, hockey. Tristan Tedder is another like him, maybe not at the same level though. Andile will be the winner of the Derek La Marque Glenwood Sportsman of the year edging out Jaco Coetzee who was SA Schools rugby captain. Anyway, point made…..he was missed at Michaelmas…..man amongst boys, like Roelofsen…

@Grasshopper: Pretty sure that Jesse was injury free the whole season, it was Dan that was hurt. It was also a very, very good KES team that included Marx and others, so we are certainly not claiming that Dan was all the difference.

I am surprised that your Academy of Excellence couldn’t deliver a suitable replacement …

@Roger: Yes Roger, gloat whilst you can. Well done to KES, pulling 3 very close games from the fire. Not much of a difference in the sides really. Glenwood defeated Waterkloof the week earlier. On the day, KES was better and Roelofsen showed his class, surprised he isn’t playing franchise cricket too.

    th
of October v KES at Collegians CC (Michaelmas Week):
Glenwood posted a competitive 236 for 8 on a hot day at the Collegians
ground . An outstanding effort considering they we
re 30 for 4 earlier on in the
innings . Once again Mickey Hay shone with an outstanding 63 .Matthew
Kirkham showed his hitting power with a quick fire 52 off 34 balls and Jerome
Bossr underlined his growing potential with a patient 48 . KES batted very wel
    l
to chase the total down . A few questionable umpiring decisions definitely
aided them but all in all a good game of cricket . Mickey Hay shining with the
ball as well capturing 4 for 28 . KES winning by 4 wickets in

@Roger: As far as I am aware, the figures are as follows:
    – St Alban’s varies between 500 to 550
    – Saints varies between 780 and 820 per their Admissions office
    – St John’s varies between 750 and 800 per a mate who has a kid there
    – KES has some 1,200 per mates who have kids there
    – Jeppe has some 1,000 per Dean Laing
    – Parktown has 800 to 900 per websites
    – Randpark has over 1,600 pupils (i.e. over 800 boys) per their website, while other big co-ed schools are close to this size – e.g. Sutherland, Fourways, etc.
    – St David’s has a similar amount to St Alban’s, while I believe that St Benedict’s is a bit bigger – i.e. 600.

@Roger: Apart from House and Hilton, most of the other private boys’ schools are similarly priced. Note that the 2014 fees are quoted for some schools (e.g. Bishops, Saints, etc), while the 2015 fees are quoted for others (e.g. St John’s, St Alban’s, etc). Applying an 8% – 9% fee increase to the former, yields similar totals to the latter.

St Alban’s has about 520 boys, while St John’s has about 760 and Saints about 800.

@Vleis: College has a very young team, grade 10, even a few grade 9. The team has been weakened by 2 kids leaving through emmigration with another on his way in December. They are a huge loss, not only for their cricket, hockey and rugby but as boys in general. It does make room for the school to show it’s depth, and College has lots of that.

@Vleis: @Gungets Tuft: The Gauteng schoolboy cricket is currently in a league of its own. Apart from KES, St Albans and Affies who were unbeaten at the Michelmas week, St Stithians and Waterkloof dominated the Coke T20 by a long way. Centurion, Eldoraign, Garsfontien, PBHS, Jeppe and Parktown also have strong teams which make the “league” up north very competitive. This strong leaugue also go a long way to make the Noord Vaal cricket very interesting. Then off course we also got the Gun en Moore trophy (equivalent of the Beeld Rugby Trophy) for the traditional Co-Ed Schools. Schools like Nelspruit, Monnas, Jansies and MenloPark is always competitive in the Gun and Moore Trophy. Although I think Waterkloof has dominated the GM of late.

On the recruitment side of things I’d love to hear from those who think that there is nothing wrong with recruiting at all levels – I’d love to hear how they justify it. I’ve tried to find out – but the answers I got were rather deflective. Hopefully both sides of the coin were presented and it didn’t become a dissing session. I trust not.

I have been a supporter of Glenwood and their style for a while now but when it comes to players of age playing against schoolboys,I draw the line.
Also the enhancement of the boys physique by unnatural substances must be stopped in its tracks. Ban a couple of boys for a year and see what effect it has. KES is a prime example- they were very good while the ‘stuff’ was flowing but as soon as a few got caught and were in serious trouble with the law, did they conform and as a result, so their form dipped.
