Blue Bulls & KZN Share The Spoils at IPT 2014

After an intense week of youth club rugby hosted by the KZNRU at Woodburn Stadium in Pietermaritzburg, the Blue Bulls and KZN Duikers emerged as winners in the five participating age groups.

The Blue Bulls were victorious in the Under 13, Under 14 and Under 15 age groups with KZN lifting the trophies in the Under 16 and Under 18 age groups.

The KZN Duikers Under 18 team, coached by Donald Ngwenya were in dominant form all week, winning their first three matches convincingly and were marginal favourites going into the final match against the Blue Bulls.
A dominant forward display, along with some scintillating backline play sparked by late replacement Mabhutana Peter who after returning from the SARU Under 18 Sevens tournament, showed how dangerous he can be when given a little space off front foot ball, resulted in the KZN team running out 41-25 winners in the final match of the tournament to lift the Under 18 IPT trophy.

Fittingly, two KZN Under 18 players ended the week leading the scoring stats in the age group with Karl Terblanche scoring 5 tries during the week and James Hall scoring 51 points with the boot.

James Hall was outstanding all week and apart from his accurate goal kicking scored two tries in the final – The EP Kings took full advantage of the blasé recruitment attitude of the Sharks and the nuggety scrumhalf will be heading to PE in 2015.

    What a pathetic performance by the Beloved Blue Bulls… After the first try from Colbe it never looked as if the Bulls were capable (or had the will) to pull this one out of the fire. Congratulations to the Mountain Goats. Congratulations to Alistair Coetzee. To coach a WP team with such a young and unknown pack to such a comfortable win over a Bulls team, with so much talent and so many “big names”, took some doing. Very depressed :cry:

    BB 43-20 Charkies U/19. FT. Game tighter than score reflects. Charkies lost ball with open tryline. Again at the end of match. Lost ball on Bulls tryline. Runaway try for Bulls.

    @Buffel:

    Actually – we start from U6!! The Junior section plays in the 2nd term for boys turning 6-11 and the Colts section for boys turning 12-18 in the 3rd term.

    But you are correct in saying that we have a fine setup. This did not just happen – it has taken many years of dedicated people working very hard behind the scenes. People like Andre Beetge, Malcolm Kennedy, Rudi Havenga, Eamon Kriedeman and others who have given freely and tirelessly over many years to build the organisation into what it is.

    Unfortunately though there are some negative factors that need to be sorted out going forward – those being the tendency of some schools and school coaches to dictate terms to boys as to if they can play and where they can play. Also, and very connected to the first point is some clubs (OK one :mrgreen: ) using dubious means to take the top players from the smaller clubs. Left unabated – this will result in this club having no opposition to play against.

    I suggest to any parent who’s son is serious about the game to contact their local club that offers junior club rugby and sign up. They take boys from u13 to u18 and the benefits are huge.
    We have been involved for the last 5 years and next year James joins the EP Kings on a 2 year contract. A large part of his rugby development can be attributed to the DRSU set up and their coaching staff.
