Of interest this weekend is that HTS Middelburg’s reliable scrummy Rowan Gouws starts for the Sharks while regular captain Ayron Schramm is ruled out by injury and flu. The strong Free State team’s starting lineup includes Limpopo sprinter Arno van Staden who came off the bench last weekend to score two tries in the win against the Leopards. Glenwood’s Corne Vermaak who’s had off the field issues to take car of also finds a spot on the bench this weekend. Grey College and Maritzburg College have restored annual interschools ties after five seasons of inactivity. Their match will be broadcast on DSTV Supersport at 14h00 on Saturday, 16 August 2014.

Bad idea: Henry Immelman playing Free State Currie Cup this year
Big news doing the rounds is that Grey College fullback Henry Immelman has been included in the Free State Currie Cup 2014 training squad. At this stage it’s unclear whether this is a genuine call-up or just some sort of I don’t know marketing or incentive ploy that rugby unions like to make use of from time to time. Either way the story kind of reminds me of Jaco Taute from back in 2009 when we was a 6 A’s matric student at Monument in Krugersdorp and got to make his debut for the Lions senior team at just aged 18.…
