Hey Snelvuur thanks very much for the shout out. Yes that U14 game had a real test match feel about it with DHS just managing to stay in touch with penalties and doing all they could to PRG’s hard running backs at bay. The u16s was another nailbiter. Best of luck for the rest of the season and great for DHS to have the opportunity to play one of the SA Powerhouses.

Not sure how many DHS supporters are on the blog, but I wanted to congratulate them on a massive 19-18 win against PRG’s u14s. Scored long, long after the hooter to win the game. The u16s was also a 1-point affair with PRG taking it 22-21. Two really, really good sides you have there!

Agree, nobody Is going to give you a beer that night giving a penalty in the last minute against the home team. Oakdale losing away from home against Rondebosch, Paarl Boys losing against Oakdale away, and beating Bosch by more than 40 points away. Lots of reasons for all three, but quite a swing.

ON THE TOPIC OF HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE

I have not looked into home field advantage in the context of school sport, but I did a study of more than 500,000 matches in 2013 to ascertain (1) whether home field advantage exists and (2) how much it is worth. Basically, my findings were that it definitely does exist and, if you quantify it, home field advantage would be worth approximately 0.72 goals in football, 9.43 points in SA provincial rugby and 8.95 points in international rugby. My sense is that this number may be even higher in schools sport.

Grey High are traveling up to Pretoria Boys’ for an interschools. Its a type of experiment to see if it can convert into an annual affair. It must cost an arm and a leg in transport etc. It is 1130km.
PBHS are locked into annual distance interschools with Maritzburg College, Hilton and now Michaelhouse. Maybe PBHS could send all teams to the Grey Fest every other year.

I watched surferboy Kai Pratt against Boishaai and thought he should perhaps dump the scrumcap because one it was off, one got to appreciate his workrate a lot more. The shock blonde hair definitely gets a lot more attention when watching a match.
Schalk Burger is an obvious one that comes to mind but in SBR perhaps the Rooibulle star JC Pretorius is the best example.

    KEY BATTLES IN PRG-AFFIES GAME

I think the following key match-ups could play a key role in deciding the PRG-Affies game:
    1. Can PRG’s front row stand up to Affies? PRG’s front three are extremely mobile – until last year, the loosehead played eighthman and Altus Rabe could easily slot in at flank – but they struggled in the scrums vs Garsfontein. Affies will look to apply pressure here.
    2. Can Affies live with Jordan Steenkamp? PRG’s left wing has been truly outstanding this year. He’s probably one of the favourites for SA Schools at the moment. He’s scored in every match and has 14 tries for the season (and counting!). Scored another two tries against Bishops on the past weekend – one of which was a brilliant 40m finish.
    3. Will PRG’s discipline hold up? In the last few seasons, PRG sides’ discipline was usually an issue at the start of the season, but improved over the course of the season. Last year vs Affies, the discipline was appalling. This year at NS, discipline was also an issue. Against Bishops, they showed signs of improvement.
    4. The tactical kicking battle. Groenewald for Affies has been excellent with his tactical kicking this season. PRG’s tactical kicking represents a different challenge though: they kick many contestables from 9, with their big wings putting pressure on the opposition. This was a big factor in the Noordheuwel game. PRG also scored two tries against Bishops counterattacking from deep, with Stoffels and Steenkamp being especially dangerous from deep – so Groenewald and co will have to be pinpoint with their kicks.
    5. That Affies maul…the maul that nearly got PRG last year. You need to be able to stop the maul: either by competing in the line-outs or by stopping it on the ground (legally). I have a suspicion PRG may look to compete in the air – Kemp’s been really good with this so far this season, and they have a number of line-out jumpers that could apply pressure on Affies – who also don’t have the towering locks they normally do.

Really excited to see whether this PRG has what it takes!

Every school has injured players and few of them have the depth that PRG has. Regardless whether PRG will be at full strength or not, Affies (who also have injuries) will be your first real test amonst T5 contenders, and their forward pack will dominate all SA teams this year. Affies to win by 8
Gim, HJS and Grey will all be hunting the maroon jersey too. Great PRG team last year, but no way they will finish the season unscathed… sê maar net

Interesting views. I am very worried about the Noordheuwel game from a Boishaai perspective. Noordheuwel very balanced side which done very well so far this year. The Affies vs Paul Roos game can go both ways but I tip Paul Roos for a win. I predict an Oakdale win against Garsfontein based on Oakdale forward dominance. Gim to run DHS off their feet.

    BUTHELEZI’S PREDICTIONS

Welkom to pip Marlow in high scoring encounter
    Waterkloof tight win over Diamantveld
    DHS to beat Stellenberg
    Outeniqua convincing win over Monument
Hot and cold Oakdale to fumble it against Garsies
Northwood to fight valiantly but Gim intensity and fitness will be too much
Boishaai another strong win over Noories
    Jeppe over College
    Stellenberg convincing win over Waterkloof
Affies pack to hurt Boland. +- 30 point win
Grey to beat Garsies (losing twice isn’t accepted)
    Gim by 15 over DHS
    Michaelhouse to edge Hilton
    Grey draw vs PBH

And the test match. I hear PRG have been boosted tremendously by players returning from injury, the main being their hooker. If PRGs individual stars shine then they will scrape it. If not Affies set piece, strategy and physicality will be too much for them
