Home sides all lose in dramatic weekend in Absa Under-19 Provincial championship
August 03, 2014
It was a weekend full of drama as the Blue Bulls, Sharks and Leopards all conceded defeat at home, with all losing teams getting bonus points out of the matches at least.This leaves DHL Western Province as the only undefeated team in the competition.

The Vodacom Blue Bulls crashed to an 11-12 defeat against the Toyoa Free State at Loftus B, the Leopards were edged out by die EP Kings 32-26 in Potchefstroom and in Pietermaritzburg, and the Xerox Golden Lions pipped the Cell C Sharks 27-24.

A summary of the matches follows below:

Leopards 26 (7), EP Kings 32 (20).

The EP Kings will be particularly pleased with this win away from Port Elizabeth. It was their first of the competition. They started strongly and by the time the home side found any rhythm, the Kings held a 20-7 lead at the break.

The Leopards came back well in the second half and in fact, came within one one point of the Kings as Brendon Kahts scored his side’s fourth try to secure the bonus point. His conversion set up a tense finish to the match.

Malcolm Jaer, the EP fullback who already contributed a try, three conversions and two penalties to his side’s effort, had the last say as he scored his second try to confirm the result.

The Leopards will have to admit that they were outfoxed and outplayed in this one.

Scorers:

Leopards (Under-19) 26 (7). Tries: Elden Schoeman (2), Allen Muller, Brendon Kahts. Conversions: Kahts (3).
EP Kings (Under-19) 32 (20). Tries: CJ Velleman, Malcolm Jaer (2), Wynand Grassmann. Conversions: Jaer (3). Penalties: Jaer (2).

Vodacom Blue Bulls 11 (8), Toyota Free State 12 (7)

A try in each half was enough for the visiting Free State side to squeeze past the previously undefeated home side.

Both tries were executed very well and speedster Lorenzo Gordon will feel pretty pleased about the three defenders he beat on the way to his try in the second half.

The Blue Bulls played second fiddle in the territorial battle and could never really threaten a very determined Free State defence.

Scorers:

Blue Bulls 11 (8). Try: Philip Orffer. Penalties: Dewald Human, Simon Bolze.
Free State 12 (7). Tries: Wilandré Kotzenberg, Lorenzo Gordon. Conversion: André Swarts

Cell C Sharks 24, Xerox Golden Lions 27

In Pietermaritzburg the visiting Xerox Golden Lions had the measure of the Cell C Sharks. The home side outscored the Lions by four tries to three, but paid the price for poor goal-kicking and some ill-discipline. This was punished by Golden Lions flyhalf Shaun Reynolds, who kicked all three conversions and two penalties for his side.

Scorers:

Sharks 24
Golden Lions 27. Tries: Dylan Vlok, Hamer Esterhuizen, Clinton Theron. Conversions: Shaun Reynolds (3). Penalties: Reynolds (2)

    @vatikaki: No worries your research is much appreciated. Dweba and Nonkontwana both SA Schools players anyway so right either way.

    @vicci:

    Thanks I’ll remove them for future reference!

    So Cafu & Houba were released or did they come to the decision themselves? Seems odd if it was the latter.

    @beet:

    Whoops went and had another look and you are correct, Dylan Vlok did have a game for the Lions.

    Divan Jonck also sat on the bench for the Lions in one of their games but didn’t get onto the field. Counts though! Another oversight!

    And I noticed I put SA Schools next to a couple of players above where I meant to put SA U20! (Dweba & Nonkontwana).

    Cafu and Houba left EP Academy. Hollis and Beswick injured. Not sure about Borsah and Jho.
    Ebersohn, Alborough and Peet Schoeman, all EP boys that could have gained valuable game time and strengthened the EP side considerably. Funny old world we live in!@vatikaki:

    @QC86: Yeah I saw that while looking at the team sheets yesterday. Baywatch back in action. Good for him. I don’t imagine any hooker relishes the prospect of chucking the ball in at a lineout where the teams locks are shorter than the centres but there is a lot to be said of a hooker who can find his jumpers under those extremely difficult circumstances.

    @vatikaki: Loose forwards Koen, Jacobs, Mazibuko, Malan and Kriek all left lasting impressions as SBR players but yet to get game time. Even Marco Holmes from EG was outstanding at school last year and now only a bench regular at the Lions. Life is tough for a loose forward in SA rugger.

    @vatikaki:
    Very interesting comment Vaki.

    I see that Vlok got a start for the Lions vs Sharks after playing in their preseason. Jonck started last weekend vs Leopards. Considering that Erwin Harris played for the Lions while at school last year, I’m sure he must also be sidelined through injury. Swart will be back in 2 weeks.

    Andrew du Plessis of the Sharks is on the injury list

    Jho is also still at school – Kingswood. His absence partly due to Kingwood having only 3 terms but also injuries have marred his overall season.

    @vatikaki: good post. That is only at under 19 level not even to speak under 21 !!! There are 2 years of players competing for 1spot. The boys were used to be heroes at school and now they only start playing late July for the first time and then they still have to be in a rotation setup. Only a few play young guns. Most of them are not prepared to wait that long for a chance. 3 SA under 20 props did not play for the Bulls yesterday and they are not injured!

    Forgot to mention Arno van Staden was on the bench for the Free State U19’s. Didn’t get onto the field though.

    Runs the 100m in roughly 10.5s

    Has a good highlights package.

    Baie goeie wen vir Ovs o19 teen die Bulle. Lekker om van my seuns in aksie te sien.
    Goeie wen vir Bulle o21, hulle moes egter baie hard werk vir die oorwinning. Wat n vermorsing van talent. Daar is 9 stutte wat roteer……3 word per wedstryd gebruik? Hoe motiveer 6 ander????????

    Poor loss at home by the Sharks – things not looking good at all! With the players who have been contracted, this is thus far a very disappointing start to the season. Going to have to play with some serious pride or they could well see themselves ending bottom of the log…. Back to the drawing board!
