Currie Cup debut for Old Hiltonian Cameron Wright

Last year he was the Hilton College scrumhalf and captain and now just a few months out of school, Cameron Wright is on the verge of making his senior Currie Cup debut for the Sharks against the Griquas.

Wright is still only under-20. He has represented the Sharks under-19 team since he was in Grade 11 but he was somehow overlooked for the SA under-20 team for the Junior World Championships earlier this year.

The former KZN Craven Week scrumhalf has tons of potential but his fast-tracking to the senior level starting line-up may be regarded as a bit fortuitous  – first Charl McLeod (Wonderboom) left for France, then Cobus Reinach (Grey College) was called up to the Springboks and next in line under-21 halfback Stefan Ungerer (Maritzburg College) broke his finger. Wright still did well to win the right to start ahead of another talented under-21 Hanco Venter (Monnas).

One thing that cannot be denied though is that the broad-shouldered Wright has just about all the essentials to become SA rugby’s next Fourie du Preez. He’s pass, boxkick, snipe and most decision-making have all been of a high standard up until now.

    Firstly congrats son.

But this issue was discussed in detail at a TUKS carlton cup game. And all agreed. The picking of juniors is wrong. In Pretoria a lot of boys are playing that could walk in any CurrieCup B League side and quite a handfull that is better players than selected for the Bulls CB side.
And here comes the joke. The Bulls will not take them into account because –
    (a) a Attitude that these boys will replace paid players and who will pay them for games played.
    (b) Playing the amateurs players will rob the contracted juniors from developing.

A sad state of affairs. But that is life.

Such awesome news Beet – such a champion kid this. Very humble boy, I will be backing him and hope he goes well. Against Griquas, this will be a hard test as their pack will be in his face.

    Go CW!
