SA Schools to senior cricket conversion rate (1994-2010)

19 October, 2014 beet 20

A concerned parent forwarded this.

Using the SA Schools cricket team by year lists available on the website www.SchoolSportsNews.co.za, he was able to identify that between the 1994 team containing legendary wicketkeeper Mark Boucher and the 2010 team which capped the rising international star Quinton de Kock, 79 out of 243 listed places belonged to players who went on to make it to senior cricket level. That’s just a shade under 33% or 1 out of every 3.…

Stefan Terblanche to host “Great Debate” at Maritzburg College

29 September, 2014 beet 132

The SchoolboyRugby Blog had the honour of Stefan Terblanche doing some free publicity work for the website via twitter recent. But before anyone gets overexcited that Stefan’s now taking a greater interest in school rugby its worth mentioning that he is hosting a Gala Debate Evening at Maritzburg College on 01 October, so his tweets are probably just amounted to a bit of self-promotion more than anything else (not that I’m unhappy about it :) )…

25 September, 2014 beet 29

The Sharks and Eastern Province under-19 teams clash in a must win round-robin match at Kings Park on Saturday, 27 September 2014 (09h30).  Along with the Golden Lions, the the three teams find themselves battling it out for the last remaining semifinal spot in this year ABSA under-19 competition. The Lions have a bye this weekend but appear to have a slightly easier finish after that, so defeat for either of the other two will probably spell the end of their hopes of making the playoffs. …

Bleak future for quality pro rugby in SA

20 September, 2014 beet 9

I switched on the telly this morning and caught the highlights of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) soccer match between Ajax Amsterdam of Holland and Paris St Germain (PSG) of France. And I know, I know, not many of you who come to read the pages here have any time for soccer but bear with me – I believe there are going to be some parallels to be drawn between the declining Dutch football league (Eredivisie) and the future of professional rugby structures in South Africa.…

Kearsney in the market for a new rugby coach

15 September, 2014 beet 8

Existing Kearsney head coach Frank Lubbe enjoyed a fitting end to his tenure at Kearsney when his team won the Voortrekker Sevens tournament on Saturday. Ironically the team they beat in the final was Maritzburg College, where Lubbe will ply his trade next year. On Botha’s Hill, the process to find his replacement is underway. Including Lubbe, Kearsney has had just 10 head coaches during a total of 73 seasons as a KwaZulu-Natal tier-1 team.…
