Future looks bright for Paul Roos

19 August, 2013 beet 5

Paul Roos supporters would have been feeling down in the dumps since Saturday’s 8-40 drubbing by traditional season ending rivals Grey College on Markotter. The defeat brought to an end one Paul Roos’ worst year’s ever. THEY DID NOT EVEN WIN A GAME ON MARKOTTER THIS YEAR! UNBELIEVEABLE!…

Quotas unlikely to end any time soon

15 August, 2013 beet 31

Those of you who thought or hoped we might be nearing a time when rugby quotas in SA get scrapped and transformation starts to take care of itself, guess again. For the 2014 Vodacom Cup season SARU has just upped it’s transformation drive by instituting quotas along the lines of those used to determine school age-group provincial teams.

The future of Dale College

14 August, 2013 beet 39

An article by Playa ahead of this weekends big Dale vs Queens derby – one of the oldest and best in South Africa.

Unbeknown to most, Dale College admitted its first black learner way back in 1901. It would be another 90 years before the next group of what were then known as ‘Guinea Pigs’ would be admitted as Dalians.

Dale played their first all-school game in 1891 against their biggest foe to date, Queens College. Out of the school’s 4 main rivals (others being Selborne College, St Andrews College and Grey High School), and until recently Queens have been the only rival that has won more games than Dale on head to head (Grey PE went ahead of Dale in 2005). Dale were last ahead of Queens in 1975.…

SA Schools named changed team to face France u18

12 August, 2013 beet 17

A number of changes have been made to the SA Schools starting line-up for the second round of the under-18 international series. France got thumped properly by Wales and one suspects that French under-18’s will have to reinvent themselves just as their under-20 national team did against the Baby Boks at the Junior World Champs earlier this year, if they are to stand any change during this game. The curtain-raiser is Wales versus England which should be a cracker. The SWD Craven Week team minus a number of their stars who are on duty for SA Schools, will have a shot against the wounded Italian under-18 team in the earlier game. It should be good.…

‘Blowing ones own Horn’

12 August, 2013 Grasshopper 109

By Grasshopper

Having worked in business for 15 years I have realised that the best kind of PR is that done by others not associated with your brand and advocate customers. In relation to schools this would be parents, kids and Old Boys of other schools and the schools own fraternity.

With the advent of Social Media schools have started to do quite a bit of their own PR via Twitter and Facebook, some even creating business Linkedin profiles. With the huge amount of professionalism in school sport and the large amounts of revenue being handled by schools, they have had to treat them as businesses. However, each school has decided either to embrace technology and social PR or to avoid it. …

KZN 2014 fixtures put on ice

12 August, 2013 beet 7

There is a lot of enjoyment derived from watching KZN schoolboy rugby. It’s good rugby and there is a lot of passion and commitment on display. But lets face it, there’s also a ton of sidelines drama here in the province as well. So I couldn’t help but laugh when I found out that even when all rivals are at off-season peace with each other and things feel like they have settled down, along comes the Minister of Education to get in on the act and properly ….. ! There will be a lot of holidays during the 2014 KZN school rugby season. …

So very tight at the top. All the interest has been on the top 2 who are only separated by 5 100ths of a point. Further down, the Northvaal battle via the BeeldTrofee is winding down with Jansies and Nellies looking set to contest for 5th spot in SA this year. In form Klofies not done yet in either and they could still claim a top 10 finish in 2013.…

Valke Craven Week hooker Pieter Jansen, who also captains Dr EG Jansen, has been placed on standby for the SA Schools squad ahead of their under-18 international quadrangular series against England, France and Wales. It’s virtually official – Affies will be no.1 in 2013

6 August, 2013 beet 86

Well I asked BHP to run the numbers regarding whether Paarl Gim could overtake Affies on the BHP SA Top 50 rankings (the formula driven ranking system). In a nutshell the answer is NO! No matter what Gim do in their up and coming games, they don’t have enough in terms of quality opposition to reel in Affies at the top.

Glenwood beats Maritzburg College 33-15

5 August, 2013 beet 11

The KwaZulu-Natal schoolboy rugby season ended with an entertaining match on Dixons field in Durban where Glenwood hosted Maritzburg College. College got out of the blocks well building up a 15-0 lead by the 20th minute. Glenwood fought back with five tries during the next 50 minutes to eventually run out 33-15 winners and increase an unbeaten streak against College that now dates back to 2010.…
