The Queen’s College 1st XV Rugby team dished up one of the surprises of the season with a stunning come from behind victory on the Recreation ground on Saturday afternoon. The underdog status that the “Men in White” had going into the match was part of their motivation to secure the shock 29-25 victory over their much fancied opponents from Port Elizabeth. While most supporters gave Queen’s very little chance going into this encounter, the QC team itself always had the belief that they could stand up to this highly rated Grey, even after the QC teams early season battles.…
Introduction:
With school rugby becoming more professional by the day, more funds, usually made available via external sources, are being channeled towards rugby player acquisitions after Grade 8, than ever before. One thing that is evident in South African schoolboy rugby is that the Western Cape has a surplus of talent. So by connecting the two: more money for recruitment and a surplus talent pool, it seems obvious that the Western Cape is increasingly going to become the shopping ground of rich rugby schools from afar who want to improve their rugby profiles, with all that’s likely to vary being the means they use to acquire players.…

Hosts Northwood has beaten Hilton College for the first time since their outstanding first team led Michael Alison won 12-6 back in 1991.
This was a match of two halves. The first half belonged to Hilton, who played the far more constructive game in the opening 35-minutes and enjoyed territorial advantage. However they could not translate this into a lead on the scoreboard and changed ends at 7-11 down. Under the floodlights, Northwood upped their game considerably in the second half.…

This weekend Northwood School will host Hilton College on their beautiful fields in Durban North. Northwood is one of those schools that really knows how to make home field advantage count. They can usually be worth up to 10 points on home soil but given the high they are currently on having recorded wins by scoring over 30 points per game during their last two home matches against Gauteng English Medium Schools Jeppe and Parktown; that figure might have to be bumped up even more. …

Boishaai has lost in the final of the annual Sanix World Rugby Youth Tournament in Japan. They have won their five matches in a row, averaging a score of 53 points per game in the process. Their opponents in the final Hamilton Boys’ High of New Zealand has averaged 43 points per game on their road to the final. Apart from the finalists, most teams in this tournament would struggle to win a game against a lower tier 1st XV at the Tony Stoops or Oakdale Rugby Festivals because they are so weak. Sanix is a great concept and a tour of Japan will be a once in a lifetime unforgetable experience for most players but as far as high quality opposition is concerned, this 2014 tournament is fooling no one. …
