Meyer Sauerman is the Eastern Province and Eastern Province Country Districts tournament. The name originates from the surnames of the people most involved in the inception of this idea (format) of final trials. It has been going for many years, although the format has changed slightly over the years.
The Meyer Sauerman will be held at Volkskool in Graaff – Reinet this year. This tournament is the final trials for the Eastern Province and Eastern Province Country Districts Craven week selections.
In the under-18 division three EP City and three EP Country districts teams compete against each other in two matches played by each team over two days, that being Friday, 16 May and Saturday, 17 May.
Teams are reshuffled after Friday’s matches and then the selectors sit down to select the respective Craven week, Academy week and Grant Khomo Week teams.
The under-16 EP team includes the whole of EP (including Country districts – the old North Eastern Cape).
The under-18 teams are selected as City and Country District teams. The teams for the Meyer Sauerman tournament are selected from previous rounds of trials – in the under 18 division you have an A, B and C side (uncertain of the under 16’s – they might have 4 teams selected out of the greater EP region playing each other over the two days).
In the past the EP sides use to play against Border and Griqua sides, but economical pressures have influenced that format to what it is today.
Schools belonging to the EP City and Country Districts do not play normal inter-schools fixtures over Meyer Sauerman weekend.
Pity the Border and Griquas teams don’t partake anymore. This used to be a huge weekend back in the days.
Anybody know the program for Meyer Sauerman, match times, etc?
