@BoishaaiPa: If Tierklou wants other matches shown, then he should get off his backside and organize another show. I think what you guys have done is great. The business model makes sense too. The reality is you can never please everyone and some wise men have said that the surest way to fail is to try and please everyone. With or without tierklous support! there will be plenty of viewers.

In die praktyk beteken dit dus: WAT WIL DIE MARK, IN DIE GEVAL TV KYKERS, HE?

Even in the Western Cape it is a little uneven. Wynberg and SACS have a long tradition of classic clashed but if my memory serves me right last year (maybe the year before that as well) was Bishops vs Rondebosch and it is going to be the same this year. Why not rotate this and give all the teams the opportunity to play in a televised game.

@beet: I think I answered point 2 already. The WC schools do not have exclusive deals!…They just happen to be more accessible at the moment. No one is saying that any school should scupper their sponshorship deal in the hope that PI will come calling!…!The fact is that PI did come calling to many a school in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 and some schools preferred to stay with their current deal, which is their good right to do and in other cases a deal could not be reached… but then their supporters must be informed that is the case! If PI comes calling this year for the 2015 season, there will again be schools unwilling to put pen to paper and again their fans will wonder why they are left out!

@BoishaaiPa: Look just so you don’t think we are on opposite sides here, I am very grateful to PI for what they are doing. I’m excited by the prospect of watching all 12 games on the list.

This is what I’m getting at tho:

If all the other schools around SA back out of their existing deals whatever they may be, how many of them could PI then contract?

This number would depend on a couple of criteria:

    1) The number of games PI are prepared to show in a season (are they willing to show more than 12 or more than 1 per weekend)
    2) If PI are restricting themselves to just 12 games pa , are they willing to sacrifice the Western Cape schools games (currently occupying 12 of 24 slots) in order to show the likes of say Michaelhouse, Hilton, Kingswood, St Andrews etc), knowing that they would have access to more Grey College games based on the conditions specified.

And my conclusion is that a lot of schools may be better off staying exactly where they are in the deals they are in because the pie is way too big for just one entity provide all with benefits of revenue.

We should be grateful to PI but also be hopeful that another broadcaster comes on board and that FNB stay committed to SBR, with the hopes that they show games now and then as well.

@beet: They would not be able to show more than one game due to broadcasting constraints like availability of outside units etc. It is quite a big setup to manuever!…There is not a definative set limit of 12 games. We work within certain constraints as mentioned before in terms of budget and availability. If it comes down to choice and we can broadcast more derby games we would even limit appearance by WP schools to one game if needed! But is is also about quality and not quantity!

@beet: For instance, PI would love to show an old derby like Hilton vs MH…Previous years there was one obstacle that kept them from screening it, so they moved on…Same obstacle is now in the way of K-Day!..You figure it out!. The more diversity we can get the better. Unfortunatly it is not always possible and as simple as it seems and outside broadcasting units are not a dime a dozen!..You have to make do with what you can get!

@BoishaaiPa: That’s why I’m careful to point you that they are just assumptions.

If you had to answer would you say PI would show more than one game per Saturday if they had access to more classic derbies or that if PI are limiting themselves to just 12 games they would be prepared to sacrifice derby involving a Western Cape team to show one from another part of SA if there was a timetable clash?

@Roger: If PI are only prepared to do 1 game per weekend they only really have space for 2 more games in June.

Since there are many other top SBR games in the country that are not FNB CC games, which PI is also not showing, one might assume that PI only want to do the 12 games per annum. Based on that one could go a step further and say that schools who are with FNB should cherish that long term relationship because chances are that if they dump FNB they would lose revenue and would stand little chance of gaining a bigger slice via PI.

Also if say Grey Bloem leaves FNB, then that would probably add another 2 game onto the permanent schedule:

    Grey Bloem vs Affies
    Grey Bloem vs Paul Roos

    to go with

    HJS vs Grey Bloem
    HJS vs Gimmies
    HJS vs Paul Roos
    Paul Roos vs Gimmies

So 6 spots booked leaving only 6 others up for grabs.

Reminder: all this above is based on assumption

@phat55: Yes it makes a difference, because the home team “owns” the game. Some Bloem games are still under contract with CC, but they dont have rights to all Grey games per se. The Markotter game against Grey are not under contract with CC, so PI can televise it and aquired the rights to do so.

@beet: Assumptions is the mother of all F……..! PI would love to televise more games and schools, but if schools keep their contracts with FNB Classic Clashes, there is nothing PI can do to televise such matches. This is a business model based on advertising and brand awareness and PI cannot televise games which they dont own any advertising rights on!..You sell your Interschools to Classic Clashes, you ask them to televise it! Schools who signed long ago and was prepared to take the risk to sign new contracts is reaping the benefits now!…

@Amalekite: BTW..HJS Paarl only have 3 games, same as last year, same as Paul Roos, Grey College as 2 as do Gim…The original 4 schools that signed with PI. Rather than pointing fingers to an initiative from Megapro and PI, why dont you ask the Headmasters of certain schools why they dont want their games televised and why they would prefer not to have a big day like K-Day televised!

@Amalekite: Grey College apparently still have a deal with FNB Classic Clashes so even big season ender against Paul Roos which I assume will be televised is a classic clash as well as the other biggie Grey Bloem vs Affies.

But I think you are right about HJS having sway. I recall their game vs Paul Roos was meant to take place some time after the July holidays and then suddenly got moved to June. I’m now almost certain this was to take advantage of TV coverage and avoid a clash with another big match but I could be wrong.

@Roger: People should be grateful to FNB for their contribution as well. They give quite a few schools money for the Classic Clashes. Not many of them make it onto TV tho. However some do and if FNB really put their efforts behind it they could come up with an awesome list of TVed games incl KES vs Jeppe.

My only wish is that FNB would publish a similar list of games they plan to televise this year.

It would appear that HJS Paarl BH”s new sponsors, Vodacom, may have quite a bit of pull when it comes to their side being televised….(4 games). Or maybe it is just a Cape conspiracy? Paul Roos – 3 games, Paarl Gim – 2 games.
Arguably, the best rugby school for the past few decades, Grey College only get 1 game – Something wrong with this picture (excuse the pun) !

According to my information the Garsfontein vs Menlopark game will also be televised live this year, but by E-TV. They are now also getting involved in the broadcasting of schools rugby which is great!
